Well, last Wednesday morning I got in rented Penske truck and drove to my new home - South Bend, IN. Stopped by a buddy's house in Kansas City (phenomenal city btw. His family is in charge of planning all the city's events for the All-Star game, so I got to sit in on a press conference/meeting of city officials; pretty damn cool) for a day/night and had some authentic KC BBQ at Arthur Bryant's, and made my way to South Bend LATE Friday night.

So now I'm here. Other than the weather and my friends, everything about moving to the Midwest was right for my family and I (it'll be much easier to keep my daughter from being Brittany Spears out here LOL). Best part about being in SB other than the family values we'll constantly be around and the incredibly cheap land, is ND football! So I'll be at every game and hopefully will be able to meet some more of you guys.

The thing I need to do now is change my username. Someone (either ACamp or HCTI) mentioned NDwasinL.A., and I think that's what I'm going to go with, cause I want to keep LA in my name. Anyhow...cheers!

But then you can retire and live off of her massive earnings. What's not to like? If you are lucky, you may get K. Fed. Part Deux as a short-term son-in-law.

Congrats. I plan on doing the same within the year. It's crazy how different home values are, eh?

I feel the same way about the family stuff. There is no where better to raise a family than the midwest. The values, schools and sense of community are unparalleled.

When I move back, we will have to.... dare I say it.... hang out or something. lol

South Bend isn't the greatest of areas...Granger and Mishawaka are pretty nice. But SB is kind of an arm pit.

We'd actually probably get along great, having a few beers watching a game. You're a lot like me...passionate about what you argue about to the point of borderline obsession that you are right LOL. I'm the same way. We disagree a lot, but really, you're a good dude and we'd get along just fine.

I'll hit more on the family values stuff late when I get a minute...

I taught middle school for a few years, and we had some great families at that school. But they have to work SO hard to keep their daughters and sons on the right path. It's hard everywhere you go, but in L.A. it's just so much damn harder. The way the kids dress, talk, act, etc...especially the girls, it's unreal.

Anyways, we're hoping for the best out here. Everyone is much more friendly, much less pretentious, much more real. Even the 'ghetto' people aren't nearly as ghetto as the ones I'm used to. Once we secure jobs, we'll be able to buy a real house (no lie, we bought a house in a very good neighborhood...868 sq feet, 6400 sq ft lot, that needed a new kitchen, new bathroom, new floors and windows, landscaping and painting for $320,000, and that was a short sale!!! And at the height of the market, that little house appraised for $472,000!!! We'd be able to buy a friggin' mansion out here w/ that type of dough. I should be able to get a teaching job, and hopefully my wife can get a job working at ND, and we'll be set to buy some nice property.

South Bend isn't the greatest of areas...Granger and Mishawaka are pretty nice. But SB is kind of an arm pit.

Meh...to each his own. I've heard the same things said about the areas you mentioned. Personally, I love South Bend, but that's just me. I know a lot of people feel differently, but I honestly couldn't care less. Personal happiness is where it's at - I HATE New York - it's just not my scene at all, but many people love it. To each his own...

i'm from niles, mi--just north of SBC. if and when you buy, if you have or need work done, message me. lots of buddies of mine have all sorts of businesses. home construction and remodel, gutters, snow removal, landscaping--you name it, i probably have a friend that does it.

make sure you head north of niles on M-51 and try a great little italian place called pete's patio. awesome pizza.
i'll be there for the u of m game this year. stop by the tailgate for a beer--we can talk when that gets closer.

It matters what side of town. My side of town, which is the west side, definately needs to be cleaned up but other than that South Bend is really good city

Truff!

I always stop there after fishing the Dowagiac River up the street. Luckily my folks live near there, because sometimes...err.... everytime I go there I get drunk as a skunk.

*edit - Riverfront Cafe is also pretty cool.

@LA - That sounds like a plan homie. Hopefully my transition happens in time for the football season, if not, i'll still be around for a few of the home games. Good luck on the move and keep us posted.

LA -

As a former resident of the SB area (my parents still live in Granger since we moved there in 1989, where I lived until college), here are some of my recommendations on one of my favorite pastimes (eating):

Eddie's Steak Shed (Granger, a true "midwestern"-type restarant), Uptown Kitchen (Granger/Mishawaka - good breakfast, you may liken it to some restaurants in LA), Barnaby's (Mishawaka/SB - known for their pizza, big time local ND hangout), Lasalle Grille (SB - a "fancy" restaurant - i.e. if you live in SB this is where you go for prom dinner :) ), Tippecanoe Place (SB - another more upscale and unique location, it is very popular for brunches on holidays), Rocco's (SB - Italian restaurant, a SB/ND landmark, although not my personal fav, still extremely popular), Redamak's (New Buffalo, MI - burger place, I thought of this when i saw Wooly's post regarding MI, it's about a 30-45 min or so drive from SB but worth it. I don't know if it is still like this since it's been several years since I've been there, but they used to only be open in the warm months and closed during the winter, so plan accordingly if you go there).

I went through grade school at Christ The King and high school at St. Joe, so let me know if you have any questions on schools for the kids (don't know if you have any). Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Welcome to town!
