FWIW Sampson wrote in the Athletic that he has heard that the WR coach is Rees's call and not MF's, so it might be more relevant to ask if Tommy has any connection to Wiggins.

The other possibility which we don't really know about it is how much exposure MF is going to give to his assistants. Saban's assistants never see the light of day, which might be frustrating for a young coach looking to get his name out. But I could see a young riser like Freeman resonating with other similar coaches by empowering them to grow as well.

Bad move if MF is pretty much giving Rees 100% power to make coaching hires . By all means he should collaborate with his offensive coordinator but any hire Rees makes needs to fit Marcus Freeman's vision, and Marcus needs to be involved.

You don't want one culture for the offense and one culture for the defense. I'd be inclined to give Tommy who he wants as I trust his judgment but I'm going to vet them if I'm coach Freeman.

Tommy may not be your OC forever. You don't want him taking the entire offensive staff with him when he walks out the door for head coaching because they're his guys.

Marcus needs to sit down and figure out his vision for the offensive side of the ball this off-season. You need have that because what you want to do affects who you recruit . When you have to replace an OC, you need to know what you want so you can hire the right replace.

Obviously if you brought in a flexbone OC, some your players you've been recruiting for years may not fit that scheme. That's a dramatic example but you get idea.

I've thought of every possible angle and determined Wiggins must smoke crack. But I'm good with that.

For what it's worth, it's been said that when FBK was here, he let his DCs essentially run the show and be the "head coach of the defense". I can see Freeman applying a similar approach to the offense, and I don't see it as a problem. When Rees gets a HC gig in the next year or 2, Freeman will (hopefully) have his pick of the litter of upcoming OCs/QB coaches.

Yall think the longer this goes, the more likely it's Wiggins? There'd be no reason for the delay if it were the Purdue coach. Then again I guess there's no rush either way.

No way. Rees is ride or die. He's OC until Freeman retires due to health issues at 50, then Reesus gets the job.

Did some research Derrick Mason apparently does a lot of 2 gap. No thanks for me.

Loved to two-gap when I could as a DC, but you’ve got to have a real dude at nose to be able to do it effectively. A Lou Nix. A Vince Wilfork.

Growing up coaching with my dad first thing I did when he let me make changes to the defense was go to a 1 gap system.

You can definitely be successful with 2 gapping. But more often than not we didn't have the personel where we had enough guys that could two gap well.

Coach Shepard is going to be the UW Huskies WR unless something awful happens.

Loy said Shepard wants the ND job. But it’s not his for the taking right now because Wiggins is the first choice.

I took it as..

1A) Brian Hartline
1B) Holman Wiggins
3) JaMarcus Shephard

Either way, 2 excellent options and one really good option

If Sheppard wants the job I'd give it to him today. In my opinion he's an absolute home run. I get there is a Notre Dame sending a message that they're no longer sitting at the kids table if you get a Wiggins or Hartline.

But I think Sheppard is every bit as good of a coach, and perhaps the most hungry. He doesn't have the brand name prestige but I think he'll do just as good coaching a recruiting.

ISD has also reported that there likely isn't a big rush because you never know what happens after the end of the regular season of the NFL. Freeman may want to see who is stuck looking for a gig after the shake up that will inevitably happen.

So Matt Nagy for WR coach then?

IMO here is a few of the things at play:

- Day doesn’t go to the NFL, Hartline says no thanks. He does leave, the door is open.

- Freeman is on the phone with Wiggins Tuesday once the Natty is won.

- Shepard has other offers, namely Washington, but is holding out for ND, matters for how long.

I don’t think there is a rush per se but next week could be when things are in motion rather than the last two.

How long do you think they wait though?

Yeah this is where I’m at to. If Wiggins is the guy I can’t expect him to publically leave until after the Championship. I can also see Hartline waiting until Fay is gone and then make a decision.

Spot on probably.

I think the reason why Shepard didn't take the UDub job immediately is like you said, he's holding out for ND and the reason ND hasn't named him the new WR Coach is they are in a great spot with Wiggins after the NCG... if it's

If Day leaves, Fickell fills the vacuum and Hartline most likely stays. So as much as I'd love Hartline to be Irish, I don't see it.

The best part of this is If they play all their cards wrong and Day leaves... Cincy's WR Coach, Mike Brown is a good option and he'd be looking for work.

If we have any designs on landing a WR via the portal we damn well better grab a WR coach soon. High school WR's we've got a little more time, not much as you want to line up visits in Jan.

I like Shephard over Bamas coach. Shephard is a young proven coach and turned Moore and Bell into studs

Could make the case that he's a better developer of talent, but Wiggins' resume obviously gives him a better sales pitch to elite recruits.

Isn't there a big football coaching clinic this week too where a lot of moves get finished up?
