ND Coaching Changes 2016

Considering this is a coaching changes thread, I'll sum up what I think of this issue right now.
-With Long, I think we about break even in terms of losing Sanford. We won't really know if he's an upgrade or downgrade for a year ie see how he recruits and see how well our Offense plays.

- With Elko we get a major upgrade in scheme, coaching and OBVIOUSLY recruiting.

- We have a definite upgrade at ST with Polian, plus he should help us with a few recruits especially in California and maybe Hawaii.

-If we get the rumoured hires in S&C, we should definitely see an improvement. Something was really not working regarding Longo.

-Long should certainly help out our TE's. Not sure how much time he'll have with them but Quinn will probably assist him with our very talented group.

-Sanford will be missed as QB coach but we'll probably see a QB hire and Kelly always gets involved there and has been with Wimbush 2 years.

- Still haven't heard anything about WR coach yet. Denbrock will be missed. I really hope we get a Homerun hire here that has good recruiting connections. He was solid in the Chicago area and California.

- Still not sure if our DL play was due to lack of talent or Gilmore or both but 3 sacks = you're fired. I really hope Elston gets those boys going in Elko' new scheme. I'm worried about our players, not so much Elston.

- I think Lyght is one of our biggest assets as a coach and recruiter and having Elko help coach up our safeties will help strengthen our young DB's even more. Super confident here.

I think that's the best case scenario.

Polian's special teams weren't great under Weis. Will they be better? Most likely, but until this fall, Booker didn't do a horrible job.

Is Quinn going to be on staff? I don't think we know that. If he is, he certainly isn't going to be an assistant at this point and an analyst has a limited role. I don't think you insult your offensive coordinator and turn his position group over to an analyst, who technically can't be on the field during practice.

I think the QB or WR coach needs to have recruiting connections in Georgia. This is the part that is getting overlooked with the loss of Booker. Booker was a good recruiter, not great, but good. Notre Dame has no one in Georgia right now. I am not sure you want Elko taking on the state of Georgia and the East Coast.

You're not worried about Elston? I think this is a huge issue. He had the most talented defensive line in Notre Dame history with Stephon Tuitt, Louis Nix, Sheldon Day, Prince Shembo, etc and underachieved greatly.

The defensive line is going to determine how far Notre Dame goes in 2017 and it's vital they develop and progress during the year. The secondary and linebackers will be more than to win games, however, the defensive line has many questions.

I agree, I don't know if Gilmore is the answer, but how had very successful defensive lines at every school he has coached at. Was it him or was his coaching impacted by BVG? The defensive line got better last fall when BVG was let go. Was it great? Definitely not, but you saw progress from where they started.

I tried to make clear that I think it's more of the latter.

And to play devil's advocate... even if he wasn't ostensibly a great value add as an assistant (which he is) people make hires all the time for ulterior motives and have it work out (which ND isn't)... just look at what Michigan has done with hires like "Team Mom" and HS coaches from NJ to aid recruiting and what dividends it has paid. That's not what ND is doing here, but if they were it wouldn't necessarily be a stupid move.

The IMG guy won't have an impact on recruiting. The IMG players that visit Notre Dame will get to see someone they know, but he's not going to make or break a recruitment.

The hire about his ability to develop athletes to reach their maximum potential and for his mind. He's an impressive guy and knows what it takes to build a successful S&C program for all sports. I think more than just football will benefit from this move if it happens.

If we are looking for a WR coach who has connections to the GA area, would we kick the tires on former GA State HC (and former ND assistant) Trent Miles? I did my undergrad at Indiana State and he single handedly turned that program around and was universally loved by the players. Might be a nice fit.

plus IMG practically has a different roster every two years. Half the guys starting for them in the fall will never have met Ballou

Y'all give Panda too hard of a time. That's my dog.

That's what we do on here.

You don't build relationships by hiring the other guys staff away. Business 101

I don't think IMG would be upset. The guy is stepping into a position at a major D1 program (keep your jokes! lol). Anyone else down there probably would if they had the opportunity.

Agree, when you have one of the best O-lines in the country and don't dominate late in the game, something is wrong. Will be curious to see if a new nastiness in the weight room will translate into BK getting a nasty attitude and run the ball?

Irish strength program to get major remake - Notre Dame - Scout

Freebie from Scout regarding new S&C staff coming in.

"After serving as Director of Football Strength and Conditioning, Longo will transition into the role of Special Assistant to the Head Coach, a title currently held by former defensive backs coach Bob Elliott. It’s unclear if Elliott, who helped craft Notre Dame’s defensive game plans against option the past two years will remain in that post or if Longo’s position will be a new one on top of the current staff."

BK: Paul, I need you to go pick up a recruit at the airport.
BK: Paul, Run down to Kinkos and pick up those football brochures.
BK: Paul, what time you making your daily run to Dunkin?

If we got rid of Bob Elliott to keep m'fkn Longo on the staff, I'm gonna blow a gasket.

Longo has no qualifications other than being BK's buddy. This is bs

Maybe Jessie Minter? Young, can relate to kids.Son of Rick Minter, coached under Miles at ISU and GSU. Not sure of his status since Miles was released.

This....

Why keep a 'monkey wrench'? I don't understand where else he would 'fit'?

"Longo will move into a different position inside the program, likely on Brian Kelly’s support staff. He’s been a key fixture inside the Notre Dame football program since he came in 2010, serving in the same role at Central Michigan and Cincinnati for Kelly."

I think recruiting wise, Minter would be a nice fit--the only issue is that his background (not surprisingly) is on the defensive side, as he was GA States Defensive Coordinator most recently and was a defensive assistant at ISU prior to that...not that guys CAN'T make the transition. However, he does look to be an up-and-coming name in the defensive coaching ranks. May be a name to look at as a defensive assistant in the future.

I would also be very upset, if that were to take place. Longo just needs to go away, if he isn't going to be the S&C director.

GA Commits - Offers

2017 = 0-24
2016 = 0-19
2015 = 0-15
2014 = 1-11 .... Newsome
2013 = 1-8 ...... Rochell

5 cycles = 2 - 77

It's not the Who, it's the How. Their recruiting model in GA is broken. A simple CBA proves resources and time spent in GA vs FL is a waste.

Big statement. Don't think you'll have many older guys agree.

ND should do something really creative in GA for recruiting. Maybe send the equipment truck down there for a tour.

I brought him up before somewhere here I think. He's a WR coach , not TE. (unless ASU recently changed that) He played WR at SC back in the 90's.

He was at Iowa or Wisconsin too for a while. Good westcoast / midwest connections.

This is good news

With Malpass and his gold card sitting inside with a trailer full of Louisville's strippers and UNC's director of curriculums.

All the 5 Stars!
