Considering this is a coaching changes thread, I'll sum up what I think of this issue right now.
-With Long, I think we about break even in terms of losing Sanford. We won't really know if he's an upgrade or downgrade for a year ie see how he recruits and see how well our Offense plays.
- With Elko we get a major upgrade in scheme, coaching and OBVIOUSLY recruiting.
- We have a definite upgrade at ST with Polian, plus he should help us with a few recruits especially in California and maybe Hawaii.
-If we get the rumoured hires in S&C, we should definitely see an improvement. Something was really not working regarding Longo.
-Long should certainly help out our TE's. Not sure how much time he'll have with them but Quinn will probably assist him with our very talented group.
-Sanford will be missed as QB coach but we'll probably see a QB hire and Kelly always gets involved there and has been with Wimbush 2 years.
- Still haven't heard anything about WR coach yet. Denbrock will be missed. I really hope we get a Homerun hire here that has good recruiting connections. He was solid in the Chicago area and California.
- Still not sure if our DL play was due to lack of talent or Gilmore or both but 3 sacks = you're fired. I really hope Elston gets those boys going in Elko' new scheme. I'm worried about our players, not so much Elston.
- I think Lyght is one of our biggest assets as a coach and recruiter and having Elko help coach up our safeties will help strengthen our young DB's even more. Super confident here.
I think that's the best case scenario.
Polian's special teams weren't great under Weis. Will they be better? Most likely, but until this fall, Booker didn't do a horrible job.
Is Quinn going to be on staff? I don't think we know that. If he is, he certainly isn't going to be an assistant at this point and an analyst has a limited role. I don't think you insult your offensive coordinator and turn his position group over to an analyst, who technically can't be on the field during practice.
I think the QB or WR coach needs to have recruiting connections in Georgia. This is the part that is getting overlooked with the loss of Booker. Booker was a good recruiter, not great, but good. Notre Dame has no one in Georgia right now. I am not sure you want Elko taking on the state of Georgia and the East Coast.
You're not worried about Elston? I think this is a huge issue. He had the most talented defensive line in Notre Dame history with Stephon Tuitt, Louis Nix, Sheldon Day, Prince Shembo, etc and underachieved greatly.
The defensive line is going to determine how far Notre Dame goes in 2017 and it's vital they develop and progress during the year. The secondary and linebackers will be more than to win games, however, the defensive line has many questions.
I agree, I don't know if Gilmore is the answer, but how had very successful defensive lines at every school he has coached at. Was it him or was his coaching impacted by BVG? The defensive line got better last fall when BVG was let go. Was it great? Definitely not, but you saw progress from where they started.
