Is "returning to ND to coach quarterbacks" necessarily mean he is officially in an assistant capacity as QB Coach? A grad assistant could HELP coach quarterbacks too.

I believe this to be true. My suspicion is that Tommy will eventually be the 10th coach on staff... but until April, he will be in a temp GA/Analyst type role.

I think this is an important hire. BK one-on-one with the QB's is not a good idea... he needs a buffer to play the good cop role which Sanford used to fill.

Someone from Stanford, sounds like it's him

It sounds like BK is surrounding his offense with guys who won't challenge him and are young and can relate to players and recruits. Its probably his last year and after his couple out of the box hires he went with someone he knows and knows this offense inside and out. Wonder how good of a coach Rees is and how he can croot

It's not just the assistant from Stanford. There is also a guy who isn't in college football that I actually think is a superb outside-the-box hire and probably more important than Steen. They'll each have different roles and I think will make great strides modernizing all of ND's S&C. Grant Steen's last two stops were definitely good ones, and the other coach -- like the other hires we've seen recently -- does a lot to help recruiting efforts in the immediate future. ND certainly getting aggressive with these new hires and contracts.

Rees already did the GA gig with Northwestern in 2015.

Wiki
Coaching career[edit]
On January 14, 2011 Young was hired as the defensive line coach for the University of Florida Gators football team.[2] He re-joined defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, his former position coach with the 49ers. On April 10, 2013 Young abruptly resigned to spend more time with his family.

As coach:
Notre Dame (2009) Graduate assistant
San Jose State (2010) Defensive line
Florida (2011–2013) Defensive line

Tommy Rees would be a very lazy hire, IMO, one of many for Kelly. Sometimes the lazy hires work out (Diaco/Denbrock), and sometimes they don't (Molnar/VanGorder), I'm not sure there is some magic formula. But I am done assuming that Kelly is particularly great at picking/hiring assistants. If he does hire rees, I'll just assume that: (1) Kelly thinks he can do the job well, and (2) Kelly is extremely comfortable with him. Whether #1 is true is TBD.

But good news on the S&C front, apparently!

Tommy Rees tells me he has not had any talks with Notre Dame about being the quarterbacks coach. "This whole thing was news to me," he said.

Rees has not interviewed for the Notre Dame QB coach job in any capacity, he said. "It's not true."

This is what I'm reading too. Man...this sure was reported by a few credible sources as true. Sounds like there's literally been no discussion between Rees and Nd....Weird.

Stanford definitely has a unique S&C philosophy in today's environment. Very movement based and block zero approach.

Notre Dame fans should pay close attention to the Rose Bowl because you're next HC might be calling plays for Penn State.

Sounds like someone is just fishing for replies/re-tweets/whatever, because I'd bet dollars-to-donuts that we don't hire a first time head coach whenever Kelly does split.

PSU's offensive FPI was hanging between 80 and 110 the last 4 years. This year it's in the 20's. He was a really good Patriot league coach. I'm surprised a mid major or power 5 bottom feeder isn't looking at him. Maybe if Kelly hangs around 2-3 more years he could be our guy if he jumps somewhere and is a head coach again for a year or two.

One thing I like about the hire of Long and potential addition of Quinn to TE coach is that a position that ND recruits better than the rest appears to be in good hands from a development standpoint. Their eventual use in offense yet to be seen.

Alize, Weishar, Smythe, Wright, Kmet. No production from that group is by design only. No lack of talent.

Does Ron Powlus not want to be a coach?

This Rees talk makes no sense with Powlus there.
