Ragone, Floyd, Rees, and Calabrese are all the ones I can remember and I think Ragone's charges were dropped. For those keeping count, that's as many arrests in the last few years as Bama had yesterday. Also, Williams, one of the Bama guys arrested, was also arrested on Sunday. Does that still count as 4 or 5 arrests?

Bishop, it is my suggestion that you not take opposition to every single poster in this thread. Lots of it are jokes, etc. I think you are smart enough to distinguish those that are making direct accusations and propositions, from those who are engaging in simply puffery. FWIW I think you have been a good poster.

I still post on Tide Fans (although sparingly), and have had to practice this myself.

Wooly is a longtime regular, intelligent poster btw, not a homer.

Google Notre Dame football arrests. Mostly what you'd expect from football players. Lots of DUI's, underage drinking, etc. Not trying to bash ND at all. Just pointing out that it's no more common at Bama or in the SEC than at ND or any other school.

I don't agree with everything you said but agree with enough to know that you aren't just spouting off. Someone can criticize me all they want - there are plenty of valid reasons to do so. If you want to criticize Bama, the SEC, or the South, I can give you plenty of valid reasons to do that too. My issue is when the criticism is dishonest, unfair, and based on ignorance, prejudice, hatred, wilfull distortion of the truth, or just a desire to smear regardless of whether it's justified or not. I have the same reaction any of you would have if someone did the same to ND or anything else you cared about.

I'll gladly take your advice and appreciate the spirit in which it's offered. I don't have a problem with Wooly. He normally seems a bright, good poster, but today I think he went out of his way to distort everything I said and just smear my team without regard to truth. No hard feelings. Thank you, Yankee. Yeah, regardless of who you pull for, the bottom line is that four kids with all the potential in the world and an opportunity to get a free education just screwed themselves and maybe ruined their lives. I hope they can turn their lives around too.

Man, I wish I had the answer to that one. I see it every day in my job. Know what's scary? I did some really dumb stupid **** at that age too. I didn't beat anyone or commit armed robbery, but still some really stupid stuff that I could've gotten in serious trouble for. I drove home from bars as a college student too drunk to remember my name so many times. I could've killed someone. Way too many stupid, 20-year-old bad decisions and somehow I got through it all without ruining my life. Probably the same sort of stuff lots of us did and just got lucky. There but for the grace of God....

Why would you want to make up something just to insult someone or something if it isn't true? That doesn't seem to be in line what what you guys claim about ethics and integrity at ND. Personally, and this is just me, but whether we're in my house or your house or standing on a public street, that doesn't seem to have any bearing on whether something is true or not. The Alabama story is all over ESPN...NOT! It would be under the "breaking news" if it were ND. ESPN has it's face so far up the rear-end of Bama, Saban, SEC they can see what's in the stomach. They aren't remotely telling the whole story. Having a non-existant girl-friend took 15 minutes of every ESPN segment for a week. What these four fools did is 10X worse. Still another reason to despise ESPN.

We all did a lot of stupid things at twenty yet I willing to bet that none of us ever considered doing what these guys did.

Probably. We have several walkons that have been there for 3-4 years. In the past, those guys have been given scholarships when ones were available. No reason not to use those scholarships and reward a player who's contributed to the team for a few years.

Speak the truth my brother-even Brando blew it off this morning which really showed me where the media puts its emphasis. I never thought I would see the day when a criminal act was overlooked in comparison to a kid getting duped on the internet.

Btw bishop, these two situations underscore some fundamental differences between ND and UA. Gottlieb wasn't dealt with by his sports coach. He got booted by the University who considers student conduct to be a University responsibility and is dealt with at the University level.

At UND coaches don't investigate Student misconduct, nor decide guilt, nor issue punishment, a faculty/student committe does that for the entire student body.

I congratulate UA for getting their "house in order" post Saban's arrival. Were student discipline in the hands of the UA Administration and not sports coaches, those troublesome pre-Saban students would't have been the problem you repeatedly stress was cleaned up when Sheriff Saban rode into T'town. UA has the problem because they defer to coaches be they people of character, secretary beating wimp's, pill popping drunks, or just under performing sons of great NFL coaches.

Heaven forbid a dean of students or any faculty or administrative person handle student misconduct of an athlete. That would smack of institutional control. You may snow most of the members here but I live here. I have family who are UAT alumni. I've followed the program since Bryant was coach.

Every school has a different process for handling student misconduct. Some have a student committee, some have a faculty committee, it's handled by the university admin elsewhere, or the student's coaches, or their department's dean, etc. I don't have a problem with how a school does it or think that one way is necessarily better than another as long as it's handled adequately.

The current Bama situation is being handled by both the athletic department and school admin working together. Ultimately, it's a school issue and the final decision rests with them (at least formally), but realistically, those guys were best known as representatives of our football program. In the end, it won't really matter what committee or administrator or coach makes the decision. They'll be expelled and totally disassociated from the team and the school.

As for allowing coaches to handle discipline within their program, I don't know that that's necessarily better or worse than having admin do it. Administrators are no more or less likely to be competent at that than a coach is. Maybe the only real advantage is that a committee is less likely to make exceptions or turn a blind eye than an idividiual coach or admin might be. To a great extent, having coaches be responsible for their players is just delegating authority like all organizations do. Obviously the coaches should handle small team-related things (I can't imagine a coach having to go to admin to determine what to do with a kid who is late for practice), but at what point along the spectrum of bad behavior do you say, "This is admin's sphere?" I lean towards coaches handling all but the most serious issues with their athletes, but with clear oversight from admin and them definitely having the ability to overrule the coach if they feel he doesn't handle a situation adequately. A big part of that though is admin hiring coaches who WILL do their jobs adequately and handle such issues fairly and competently.

They may have been our players, but I don't have much sympathy for them. The guys they beat and robbed were our students too. I hope the 4 learn something, get their lives turned around, and end up being good decent people someday, but right now I'd rather see them in orange than crimson. There's no excuse for what those idiots did and no place on our campus or any other for them.

Eddie Williams was a phenomenal talent. Makes me so mad to see kids throw it all away on dumb decisions. Jansen Jackson comes to mind as another highly touted safety prospect who blew his ride.

Sorry for lengthy post.
In full disclosure...new poster here who did join during the Manti Teo saga. I commented then that however the story turned out, that ND was bigger than the episode, etc. I did not join to poke fun at ND...I tried to reassure ND posters that most folks with common sense understand that our programs will experience bad times but it does not define our programs...hopefully.

As to why Manti's story was covered so widely? My honest guess is due to his celebrity status as the ND leader and a Heisman candidate influenced the amount of coverage. Also, the story was so unusual it had people eager to find out what was going on. Yes, the recent Alabama arrests are much more serious than what happened with Manti.

Alabama's recent arrests involved no one of national celebrity. These kids were backups, not Heisman candidates...thereby not as appealing to casual readers. And as serious as these offenses are they are much more common in society than Manti's story...sad yes.

What story do we think would grab a non football fan's attention? If your job was to increase readers, traffic, etc. and they both happened on the same day, which would you lead with? Manti's story is obviously the bigger seller. Fair? Absolutely not.

I hope Manti goes on to a great NFL career and as much as I have been raised to dislike ND...I hope they stay at the top. College football is more entertaining with the ND's and Bama's playing for national championships.

As far the 4 from Alabama. I am confident they will never step foot on campus as a student or player again. I hope they are punished severly enough that they make better choices in the future. If that means jail time, good. And I say that after spending several years helping one of the players we are talking about. He never showed signs of this behavior growing up. I would have given him the keys to my house and told him to go get something for me and would have never worried about what he was doing. I have known him since he was in 4th grade. But this act is severe enough that even if it is a 1st time it must be dealt with harshly. I hope that the punishment will allow him to one day make another go at his dream of playing in the NFL. But if he is unable...he has only himself to blame.

Roll Tide and I hope we both meet in the national championship game again in the near future.
