Thank goodness Coach BK is the one making these decisions....
I'm at work so I only read the last two pages. If I have this right, we have a thread that says ND Hires New OL Coach but we aren't really sure if its a done deal and some are happy with it and some are not?
Basically. It was tweeted that it was done only to say that it was close and not yet done later. Some don't like it because some use UT rushing rankings the past two seasons while others look past it and use his history to judge.
EDIT: I think it's held up right now because of contract issues like a buyout that has to be sorted through.
I would almost compare this situation to a recruit who may not be highly regarded but has an offer list that includes Alabama, USC, ND, OSU etc. He was supposedly wanted by Urban Meyer and BK got him. I understand the results didn't make a fanbase happy in UT but that seems more to do with Derek Dooley then Hilestand. He has a pretty solid track record. I know some wanted Andy Heck but doesn't mean the feeling was mutual. Maybe he didn't want to go into the college ranks.
Bolded part = SEC front 7s vs. Inexperienced OL at UT
Underlined part = group I'm in
Anyone who isn't happy should have to provide an alternative hire, explain why it's better, and then justify why it would be a realistic choice.
On the Harry Hiestand-to-#NotreDame stuff: Hiestand resigned & Tennessee hired a new OL coach Thursday. So...yeah.
@ChiTribHamilton:
I remember when I first joined and thought NDOM was just a trolling punk. Then I realized he was right way more then the super optimistic next-year's the year crowd ever was.
Taken from another board, quoting an Illinois fan: ''He is absolutely one of the best OL coaches in the business. Was incredible at Illinois. This is a grand slam homerun. This is huge for ND if Kelly pulled it off. When it hits the Illinois board, I will send you the comments from the Dads of the kids he coached.''
He was incredible at Illinois... and great with the Bears... what's not to love with this hire? The fact that Lane Kiffen "Tyrone Willinghammed" Tennessee and the team has gotten beaten up in the SEC the past couple years because of it?
I think Kelly made a great hire assuming Hiestand can recruit. Which there's no evidence right now that he can't.
They're ecstatic with Hiestands departure over at VolNation.. It's pretty funny to read.
They were blasting the hire on ND Nation, saying how this was all Urban Liar's master plan to string Kelly "about by the nose" for having feigned interest in Hiestand only to steal Kelly's OL coach and having planted the seed for Kelly to want to hire a dud. I literally pissed myself with laughter.
That Urbie pulled one hell of switch-a-roo on Kelly's green a$$![]()
For someone to even come up with and actually have people agreeing made my night.

If there's a site that has a lock on feigned interest, it's ndn. They're still celebrating, ...
IT'S GRUDEN!
I gave up on ND nation to the point that I won't even venture to their site.
Those idiots wouldn't be happy with Rockne on the sidelines with Ara, Lou and Leahy on staff.
I do disagree with the notion that, well, we don't "know more" than Kelly so we should essentially avoid criticizing his decisions.
Second, people who "know more" than me make dumb decisions all the time. People, from judges to doctors to truck drivers, may "know more" about their given field than I do, but it doesn't mean they don't exercise poor judgment deserving of criticism. It's possible coaches make mistakes that even a humble Subway Alumnus can see coming.
True. You don't have to be a Wall Street banker to be justified in thinking that Wall Street bankers have made some big mistakes in recent years.
Though on this, a lot of the criticism seems to flow from: "This guy coaches at Tennessee. And Tennessee is lousy. Therefore, he must be a lousy coach. And therefore, Kelly's a moron. I knew it!"
When we all know enough about college football to know it's a little more complex than that. For instance, he seems to have done a good job developing players at Illinois.
if he coaches like he did at UI, he'll have a chance to do some good....if his lines resemble that of his NFL days, we're going to look like ****. Plain and simple.
I've been a Bears fan since I first started watching football in the early 80's. His lines were some of the worst I've witnessed in Chitown. I don't mean just the run blocking either, I mean not being able to stop a beach ball from getting to the QB. His lines may not have given up sacks, but they didn't prevent their QB's from taking a beating back there either.
I give Heistand a pass for the UT debacle, but his time in Chicago earns him D- at best from my point of view. Also spare me the apples to oranges crap.....blitz recognition and pick-up is the same no matter what level you're coaching. The sad part, is that he had soo much more time to spend with his NFL group to prepare them than he did at the college level, and his groups still underperformed at a high level.
In 2008, Chicago’s offensive attempted 557 pass plays and absorbed 29 sacks. In 2006, the Bears attempted 539 pass plays and allowed just 25 sacks, the lowest total given up by the team since allowing 17 in 2001, as Chicago went on to win the 2006 NFC Championship leading to the organization’s first Super Bowl appearance in 21 years.
Welcome Coach Hiestand! I hope all the details get worked out so you can become Irish very soon.
I'm guessing your a pretty damned good coach since Coach Kelly picked you to be part of his team. His opinion is good enough for me, because as shocking as this may sound.... I'm not a football coach. (if you need a Subzero refrigerator or Wolf range for your new home please look me up; )
If there happen to be more positions Coach Kelly needs to fill, you might have him check out this thread so he doesn't make a terrible mistake. If you read back through it you'll see we apparently have several people who, are as, or more qualified at putting together a D1 coaching staff than him.
Good Luck and Go Irish!
