Zellner has requested a 90-day extension for her brief that was due at the end of this month.

Girlfriend has relatives in town. Her aunt's hubby is a police officer that was involved in the investigation. If I had a few drinks in I'd start with the conspiracy stuff.

I'll give a quick rundown. He said the documentary only showed the sketchy stuff. Which is partially true. He said he definitely did it. He's a police officer so honestly I didn't get the vibe he cared much about how the investigation was handled. He mentioned "some shoddy police work.". He also said it happened how the kid described... But Steven was convicted on the basis that he did it in the garage, wasn't he?

He basically said the end justifies the means... Which to me, goes 100% against how the law is supposed to work... You know, however that saying goes, something about letting guilty men walk free instead of putting an innocent man behind bars.

Did he say which of the 4,000 different coerced confession stories was the real one? LOL.

How long before he disappears or gets framed for something?

Is there anything they can do anymore? This was a federal ruling.

Leagally speaking, I'm not sure. But obviously the law enforcement involved in this case doesn't abide by the law so who knows what they'll do now.

He'll prolly get whacked if he tries to go after them tho.

What they did to the nephew was horrendous and I am very glad his conviction was overturned. That was justice. But I do think the uncle is guilty and belongs in prison.

If the confession from the nephew was used in his trial and was found to be coerced, is this not enough to get the uncle a new trial?

I thought I heard on TV that they can try him again?

I guess they can. I don't really get how a lower court gets to take an overturned federal verdict back to trail without any new evidence, but I guess that is the case.

According to Dassey's attorney Laura H. Nirider, the state has the option to appeal or retry the case within 90 days. If the state pursues neither course of action, Dassey will go free, according to court documents.

My guess, they don't want the press and know that they don't have anything on him. It would be pretty hard to get a jury to re-convict him now that his case is public knowledge. My guess is they will refrain and save their energy for the possibility of Steve getting an overturned verdict as well.

Glad he's getting out. That was bullshit from the beginning. Imo, though, true justice will come when those in charge of arresting and prosecuting Brendan are called to face their own wrongdoings.

I hope Steven's case gets significant review as well. There is 0% chance he was guilty beyond reasonable doubt and imo, he got totally screwed. Even if he did do it, it's my opinion, that he deserves a new trial.

Theoretically, the state can re-try him. I didn't read the federal court's opinion, but I think I gather from news reports that the court just held that Dassey's constitutional rights were violated by the use of his involuntary confession against him; theoretically, that doesn't stop the state from retrying him without introducing that confession into evidence.

But practically ... there is no other evidence against Dassey. So I can't understand what prosecutor would attempt to re-convict. It's either appeal or release.

Have they appealed? I'd be surprised if they did even that.

Is this a show that can have multiple seasons? Or was this a one time thing because it took years to make?

I wish they would do new cases as well, but I can see the appeal to following up with the post-conviction process in this particular case. Especially now that we know Brendan is getting out. "Season 2" could be pretty good.
