Can't help but think some of these recruits see the writing on the wall with LK. There is no way they see him being around four years.

I think it's the class he's pulled together... Even with sanctions it's one of the best in the country. If he keeps Lane one more season he at least gives the new coach some talent in the cupboard to build around. Fire Lane now and that class dissolves.

Good point.

Pat Hayden s/b thoroughly embarrassed. What a disgrace to all things college football having Lane at the helm.

My guess is Hayden is just trying to ride out the sanctions with Kiffin and then he will bring in a coach that he wants.

Maybe, but it doesn't make sense. What is it he can do during the sanctions that another coach can't? If you're right, it's probably due to the size of the buyout in his contract.

I was thinking more along the lines that the coach he really wants might not want to come during the sanctions and have to deal with it all.

It is U-S freaking C. They always get talent. If Haden wanted to get a great coach now I think he could.

If I was Haden I would be having some serious concerns after the debacle at the Sun Bowl. Being an hour and a half Late for the luncheon sent a message to this team that he didn't want to be in ElPaso and had no regard for the organizers, the fans, etc.. His team followed lead with its embarrassing performance.

Yep. The leader always sets the tone. There is no objective way of looking at Kiffin's performance, other than recruiting, and being pleased. That said, I side with ndfi78 a couple posts above in saying that because of the reduced schollies, Haden simply may not be able to get his desired long-term solution at this time = very little depth and very little margin of error in recruiting. At least I hope that's the case... for as long as humanly possible.

NDinLA can probably shed more light, but I've heard and read a lot of stuff lately that Haden is (and will) just keeping Laney around until probation is over...then he'll drop the ban hammer on him and replace him with a real coach.

Obviously makes sense on one hand, but then again, this could just be one giant group-think platform that has emerged to rationalize why he's the football coach at usc.

That could very well be why, but my point was his Sun Bowl escapades were something that was exposed on a national level where as his problems with the press in LA are more localized so the tainted spotlight on USC wasn't as bright.

He was out coached. Either by in game modifications, opposing coaches able to predict his tendencies, or his teams lack of ability to execute. In any observation he was out coached. He is not a great coach. He may be a good OC/playcaller/recruiter but not great. Hope he stays awhile. :)

Oh, I agree.

I think Laney staying or going may tell the true tale here. There's really no reasonable, logical explanation for keeping the dude. Their performance this year was pathetic. Virtually 7 billion other people on Earth could have gotten usc to at least a 7-6 record. If he keeps his job, maybe credence is given to the theory above? If he gets sh!tcanned (which I think basically all reasonable people agree he should), then Haden's thinking is obviously not what is stated above.

In my opinion, I think Haden probably did (does) want to keep him through the restrictions. After the season and bowl performance though, I think Haden has a real dilemma on his hands. I mean how does he justify keeping him...unless he has a larger, grander plan in mind?

The only reason Kiffin still has a job is because of his current recruiting class and sanctions. Anything less than 10 wins next year and he is 100% for sure fired IMO.

Are they really good enough to get 10 wins? Losing players and keeping Kiffin can't help.

Wasn't trying to refute your point, my man. Just adding my additional perspective. Haden can't help but be awfully concerned at this point, I would think. Kiffin is a total train wreck.

Kiffen is that unusual case that proves the Peter Principle. In almost every case, groupthink, not performance gets that exception above their highest level of incompetence.

Somehow, without the word to express it, getting from there back to here requires groupthink, (exclusively) or the axeman.

Like I said, he is just the stop gap until the sanctions are gone. Once they, he gone.

I didn't think you were. My point was this was more of an embarrassment for the university as a whole and not just football. With the university presidents and board of trustees attending the Sun Bowl festivities I wouldn't be surprised if Haden was asked to meet with the prez upon their return to LA.

I know all the BK speculation has created a crisis. Just remember it could be worse. We could have Lane Kiffin as our coach.

No head coach is better than Lane Kiffin.

Edit: Having no head coach is better than Lane Kiffin.

That is very erroneous if the reader doesn't infer the ellipsis at the end of the sentence.

"No head coach is better than Lane Kiffin (for a head coach)" is how you meant it.

Want to hear a Kiffin move? Both Kiffin and Meyer called up Jaylon's trainer after the Kelly news came out. They said "since Kelly left Notre Dame, is Jaylon coming our way?".... they were both told "no" and promptly hung up on

Holy crap you are right I did write that pretty awful.

Do we know what he did to the Fitts kid?

Not sure if we know the full story, but basically he told Fitts that with McQuay's commitment they could no longer take him (Fitts) as an EE, and he would have to wait till June if he wanted to come.
