Well, USC had one rogue kid (that is, they were caught with one rogue kid) whose parents were getting hooked up by an agent and who had a seriously tricked out car that he couldn't account for, plus they hired an extra consultant/special teams coach than was allowed. You had the OJ Mayo fiasco (basetball). Oh, and some tennis chick got hooked up with a calling card or something (tennis).
Compare that (again, that was what USC was caught with' I'm sure there was more going on) with what went down at OSU, and there is no comparison. Players getting hooked up with free tats was just the cusp. Players were selling their gear/swag for thousands and thousands of dollars, unchecked. Players were getting hooked up with cars. Players were getting hooked up with drugs for autographs. And don't even get me started on Terrell Pryor. And all of this under the watch of a coach not only permitting this to happen, but covering it up as well!
I actually know the USC case much more in-depth than I do the OSU case, but I've read up on the OSU crap as well and they just seem sooooooooo dirty. If the NCAA has ANY backbone, they'd do OSU the same way they did USC.
(And there is even some parallel to the cases: USC hired a dirty-*** scumbag with Kiffin in the face of sanctions, and OSU hired a dirty-*** scumbag with Meyer in the face of sanctions.)
Obviously you don't know what was actually happening at tOSU.
First of all the only part Tressel knew about was the tattoo infraction. And he didn't do anything to cover it up, he just didn't really do anything to report it. If you don't think coaches are notified of violations at every school and do not report all of them then you are just being ignorant.
The players were selling their gear for face value. They got the same amount for their gear as they would if they sold it on eBay. It was sold for fair value, so they didn't receive any extra money because they were tOSU players. While this is a violation, I don't think selling your OWN stuff is nearly as big of a deal as giving player's free cars and pent houses (USC).
I'm pretty sure you just made up the drugs for autographs part because I have never heard that rumor. The guy that the players sold THEIR gear to in return for tattoos and cash was involved in drug trafficking, but it was never reported players purchased drugs or traded for drugs from him.
And the cars were just loaners that were given to the players when they took their cars to the shop. All the stories of players getting free cars were proven to be untrue and poor journalism.
tOSU has the largest compliance department in the country and has had the most NCAA violations over the past ten years because they self-report more than any other school.
Did tOSU violate NCAA rules? Yes. But IMO it was no where near as bad as USC. The allegations revolve around players selling their stuff, whereas the USC violations were a result of players being given gifts.
And btw to the post above saying there is no over signing in the big ten, Meyer never over signed at UF. Three schools in the SEC do not over sign: Florida, Georgia, and Vanderbilt.
