Let's compare to his UC days, because it's still relevant! Zach Collaros ran the zone-read almost exclusively when he took over for injured Tony Pike, and it also made him a better passer because defense were forced to account for RB AND QB on ever play.

Not coincidentally, that was one of the most productive TE years BK has coached, too, as they had TE's combine for like 700 yards and 10 TD's. Those seams were OPEN.

They don't even need to be aggressive in attacking the seam. ND should be able to run a grade-school f*cking pop pass with the way teams load the box... take the snape, linemen all cut block, Wimbush throws an easy 5-yard popup over the linebackers. It's a guaranteed conversion when you need it most!

You forget that that's about the same distance of pass as a stinking screen pass. Wimbush would somehow throw it toward the ankles of the tight end and it would be intercepted by the linebacker.

I'm less excited about throwing jump balls to our TEs since looking up LSU's depth chart: 3 of LSU's 4 starting DBs are 6'2'' - 6'3''. Dunno what sort of constraint plays we can successfully run to keep their defense from stacking the box.

That's a very good question. We've never had a QB under Kelly who could reliably execute the Zone Read, which has limited our offense in lots of ways.

I think very few are actually zone reads (with exceptions to keep the D honest) and are really just straight handoffs to try and limit hits to the QB. The "mistakes" always seem to be that the QB gave it up instead of keeping and not the other way around.

I don't doubt that a lot of what we see as "read" are actually just designed keep/give, but I can recall at least 5 instances from this season where BK was imploring with Brandon to have kept the ball when he instead gave it and got Adams tackled for a loss.

Agreed 100% but I’m afraid he’s right if you simply go by trends. ND looked anemic offensively post-WF. Is a month of rest truly all they need to get back on track? ND has yet to show up in a big-time bowl under Kelly.

Upsetting the lower-ranked Bayou Bengals in a New Years Day Bowl would be my ultimate Christmas present. But much like a new Lexus showing up in my garage Christmas morning, I will not be holding my breath,

Go Irish.

ND is no more beat up than anyone else playing. Those that are out are out no matter when the game is played. ND has no excuse for coming in flat. For the life of me, I cannot understand why they wouldnt get up for a big time game against a big time program like LSU. LSU is better year in year out than any team on NDs schedule except maybe USC so if they cant get up for that, maybe its time to give up football and do something intense like golf???

TRICK QUESTION.

Gilyard actually played primarily outside when he was doing most of his damage.

yeah my only memories of him were catching fades tbh, he's always mentioned on here in regards to why BK can never get production from the slot for some reason..

It's just group-think that people have latched on to lol.

BK's slot receivers at UC were: Marcus Barnett (stud who never saw the field after an 800 yard, 13 TD freshmen season); Ben Guidugli (a TE who lined up in the slot to expose the seam; two good seasons); DJ Woods (another productive slot receiver who hit his stride under Butch Jones).

Gilyard lined up in the slot to mix things up, as BK has done with some WR's at ND. But if he was in the slot, it was usually because they were sure he'd be open on a corner route, or else that a jet sweep was going to work.

Otherwise, he was on the outside running fades or tunnel screens, with the occasional post or curl thrown in.

There's a bad case of Bengali Influenza going around Baton Rouge brought on by over-exposure to a draft.

I want Guice to play. They're already without 3 starting front 7 players, one of which is Arden Key.

They're missing far more than we are already, and I don't want a watered down win. We're a 9 win team, let's show up and act like it.

I don't give a shit who is or isn't available for LSU lol.

A 10th win is a 10th win, and that looks a lot better and FEELS a lot better for our guys heading into winter conditioning and Spring practice. They won't feel cheated or like they missed out on something if a bunch of LSU guys aren't playing.

I used to get the brown bag flu in college a lot. Got it about 4-5 times a week my senior year at ND.

You’re right...just pulled it out of thin air. Actually, I’d prefer the complete 1952 Topps baseball set in excellent condition,

If ND needs motivation after a 4 win season going to a Jan 1 bowl, then they just flat out suck. Thats like a homeless man complaining about living in a middle class neighborhood after living under a bridge for years...

My point was that they may be spent, I think this was a long tough season for these guys and the schedule doesn't help by the way they have to finish the year, every year, year after year. Could you imagine telling Saban his play in game every year is on the road against southern cal or Stanford. That's after you just played the Marines and Miami down there in that pit hole.

The difference is they have quality depth whereas ours is questionable at best

The season was long, grueling, and it did wear the team down (imo).

But this game is 5+ weeks off, last game until August...you have to be rested and hyped for that.

Nick Suss Posted 22 hours ago 12/20/17

...

"I talked to Derrius today. He’s nursing an injury. I don’t expect him to practice this week. He’ll practice next week. I expect him to play in the bowl." Ed Orgeron

Guice’s status is shrouded in mystery, partially because of the complex nature of his future. The junior running back hasn’t declared for the 2018 NFL Draft yet, but he is a projected first-round pick. Thanks to the wave of touted, NFL-caliber running backs who have voluntarily skipped their bowl games to stay healthy for the NFL, including former LSU back Leonard Fournette, questions are circulating about whether Guice would do the same.

In the past, Guice has said he’d want to play in LSU’s bowl game, whatever it is. This makes the injury excuse more valid, especially when you consider the nagging knee injury sustained in fall camp that has hampered Guice all of 2017.

True but he has announced that he will be playing

Guice announced? When? Where? Do you have a cite or is this another rumor like the Mack thread?

A Google search turned up nothing from Derrius Guice in the past week after he started missing practices. There are links to broad comments dated 12/5-12/10.

Right, I think he was referring to this Instagram post which seemingly made it sound like he was itching to play in the bowl game -- https://www.seccountry.com/lsu/lsu-...if-i-will-leave-or-stay-until-after-bowl-game
