Agree. There needs to be some consequence when players don't live up to their end of the deal.
I'm pro legalization, but I'm anti-stupidity. A rule is a rule until it isn't a rule. IMO, if true, these kids made a choice. They don't have a problem (addiction). They just made a choice to get a buzz, knowing the risks involved. The help they need is common sense 101, or a class is risk analysis. Tired of hearing people blame laws (even if we disagree with those laws), the school, or others for stupid actions of kids.

Exactly.....

True story. No one on here knows me, offline, and the story is public record, if anyone wanted to bother:

When I enlisted in the Navy, some friends had a going away party for me the night before I shipped out to Boot Camp. I was a really smart kid, with great test scores. I had signed up to be a linguist in a Cryptography shop, and had scored high enough on my language test that I got to pick what language I wanted. I chose Russian, because it was a one year long course at the Defense Language Institute, in Monterey, CA. At my going away party, someone passed a joint my way. I knew better than to hit, but I was a dumb kid and went ahead and smoked it anyway. So I popped positive on the piss test in Boot Camp. Guess what? I lost my linguist's job. And, I was slated to go to the fleet as an undesignated seaman. In other words, I would be spending my days mopping, scraping and painting walls, and any other shit job that they could think of. All of that, for about half of minimum wage. But I didn't piss and moan about the unfairness of marijuana laws, or the harsh punishment of the Navy. I keep my head down, and my chin up, and worked harder to stand out as a good sailor. As a result, I was selected by my Company Commanders (Navy version of a Drill Sergeant) to be given an "A" school (a job classification) for outstanding performance in Boot Camp. I chose Avionics Technician because a friend that I had made in Boot Camp was doing that, and we could go to the same place for the schooling. So I spent 6 years in the Navy as an Avionics Technician. I worked hard in school, and graduated as the Class Honorman. I came dangerously close to setting the record for the best GPA in the history of the program. I got a great electronics education out of it. I now make ~$65,000/year, without a college degree. So that is my frame of reference when people talk about punishing someone for smoking pot being tantamount to ruining their life, or taking away their future.

For what it's worth, and it's been awhile, but when I was a student at ND I knew more than one kid who was caught smoking pot (or harder drugs) and the punishment was considerably less severe than a semester suspension from school. More along the lines of probation. One was kicked out out of the dorms for repeat offenses. Another, if he hadn't been my roommate, I'd never have known about it. This was during the tougher Malloy/Kirk era of Res Life, also at a time when pot use generally was a bit less socially acceptable than it is now.

Obviously circumstances can vary (like that basketball player who was caught by State Police a couple of years back). And the spotlight's brighter on athletes. And if it's not a first offense I'd expect a harsher punishment (that was the rumored deal with Justin Ferguson, right?) But all these people expecting our entire 2015 running back corps to be shipped back to Florida 'til Fall for smoking a joint seem a little over the top. At worst I'd think this is a Michael Floyd-type situation. More likely they stay home from the bowl game.

I certainly hope so anyway.

This is true, circumstances matter greatly... whether they were arrested or just popped a test or caught by an RA or who knows. Good post.

If they failed a test that means they don't have to go through reslife? Which is a good thing right?

I'm hoping it's going to be like when Cierre Wood/Justin Utupo (?) were caught. Miss a game or two, keep practicing, work your way out of the doghouse.

I don't think anyone is expecting, or wanting, any players suspended for an entire semester. But if they failed an NCAA drug test (that's just an if, at this point), then I would have no problem with the school suspending them for a semester.

Since Arute's refernce on satellite radio yesterday, ND scribes have been digging into the possiblities. The guess is it has something to do w/ the Frozen Five & what the university penalties may be. It's doubtful it would be vacating wins so the question will be about reduction in scholarships. My question is "would this be university self-imposed or NCAA imposed?"

I checked Folston & Bryant's twitter feed. Folston hasn't tweeted in the last few days. Bryant tweeted yesterday PM bout Brandon Marshall reaching out to him on twitter. Who knows?

It's not like ND is full of kids from Cabrini Green and Compton. Some of these kids who could be given a semester off are going to go spend their time in places like Newport Beach, CA; Asheville, NC; Myrtle Beach, SC; Reynoldsburg, OH; and Chandler, AZ.

But you do bring up a good point: you ask why "take away the opportunity for a better tomorrow?" A suspension does not take that opportunity away. Opportunity is a two-way street. If you are given an opportunity, it is up to you how it turns out. It can turn out like Chris Zorich's opportunity, or like Lawrence Phillips' opportunity. The same opportunity, two very different outcomes. Why? Because one lived up to their end of the deal, and the other did not.

Can't speak for the other places, but I do live in Asheville. There is quite a bit of pot going around here. Other than that though, it's a pretty hard town to get in trouble in, especially because the head of police just resigned because everyone found out that he was corrupt.

We're joining the ACC.

^ Not inside info, but what else could it be.

Not many people even know who Jack Arute is. Why would he have a major scoop like that?

Sigh...life as an ND fan was so much simpler before I discovered this message board.

That would be an extremely rash reaction to the playoff team selections.

Q. The college football playoff came out, and the Big 12 got left out because they did not have a 13th game on their schedule. That's what the committee chairman said. In light of that information, does that affect how you guys might approach scheduling in the coming years here? Or is there nothing you can do about it at this point?

COACH KELLY: Well, I think everything is a fluid situation after today's decisions relative to who the four teams are. I think everybody is kind of back into their own conferences looking at did we make the right choices in scheduling and decisions? I'm sure Jack and I will get back together and look at where we are and are we doing the right things? Certainly, I think it's, again, a situation that has to be looked at and evaluated because it's such a fluid situation. Do we go to six? Do we go to eight? I think all those things are on the table for discussion as well as would we be in at 11‑1?

I think those are all valid questions to be asked, and it's our responsibility to be prepared to answer those questions based upon how we're scheduling. Fair question and one that I think we'll have to evaluate, like most conferences evaluate where they're at right now.

I used to live in Old Fort, and then Hickory. My point was that it wasn't exactly the projects, and it's unlikely that a college aged kid is going to fear for his life, if he runs into his gangbanging buddies from Asheville and refuses to do illegal shit with them.

Nice place, Asheville.

No. It wasn't. But like many have said, they definitely have not yet been SUSPENDED for anything.

Rumors on some guys maybe being in a sticky situation hearken back to before Arute's comment.

So we have weed and potential fallout, whatever Arute knows or thinks he knows, and vague descriptions of grumbling in the locker room and a "division" within the team. And none of those are related, nor do we have a single detail on any of them.

Oh, and Manti's girlfriend is still dead.

I'm not sure where it originated from but Sampson and II have been hearing rumblings about it. Like posted previously they have said nothing has been decided yet whether it be no consequences, the bowl game, or next semester.
