So who still thinks Patterson is an upgrade to Kelly?

Imagine if Kelly did this

Some people can't see the forest for the trees. BK isn't perfect, but he's a hell of lot better then what we've had. We have too many people on this sight that won't be happy unless we have Saban or Urban as our coach.

Right on...this is a crazy thread. I visit it every som often to share that i think we are damn lucky to have kelly. Coach of the year in 2012 and he arguably did a better job this year.

As a 40 year fan (1975-2015), you have seen two national titles ('77, '88), 329 wins vs 162 losses and 4 ties, 10 Top 10 finishes, and 10 10+ win seasons. And your take from all of that is "it is what we do"? I think asking for much more than that is bordering on unrealistic. Especially given the fact that we have actual STUDENT-athletes.

He said it was what ND has done for the LAST 28 years, not for his entire fandom.

Kelly is a good coach, the striking thing about him is that his ND teams generally don't show their best in the big games, in particular given Kelly's success in a division of football that had football playoffs before the BCS level had playoffs.

IMO I think it's because Kelly's strength is managing the daily ins-and-outs. When his teams buy in, he keeps them motivated throughout the season when less motivated teams might falter. But Kelly isn't an exceptional Xs & Os coach, more of a fundamentals guy. That might win you regular season games when kids are scrambling to get a handle on an opponent's option offense with 4 days of preparation but when teams have 4 weeks to prepare and everyone is motivated, the advantage is negated.

ND's 5-year FEI average ranks us 9th in the nation. Compelling evidence that Kelly has indeed turned us into a top-10 program.

I look at it this way.....Here is where ND stacked up on the 5 year average

2009 - Ranked 34
2010 - Ranked 23
2011 - Ranked 14
2012 - Ranked 15
2013 - Ranked 17
2014 - Ranked 26
2015 - Ranked 9

Clearly we are at the high point of this rating system. The thing with Kelly is that questioning him was probably justified considering he went backwards for 3 consecutive years and ended up at a point worse then where he was after year 1 (2010). I think we, as fans, felt that. There is no doubt the program took a step forward this year. The issue will be whether or not he takes the program another leap forward, or if it maintains/erodes. Kelly has clearly laid out a foundation and he should be commended for it. But can he capitalize and take us to a championship? We will see.

This is why I created the BK revisited thread after the Virginia game because, at the time, all we knew was that we were getting worse every year. The Virginia game led me to believe we would continue in a downward trajectory because Virginia flat out sucks. Turns out we did pretty well this past year. So we reversed the trend. Next year will tell us a lot. If we drop to 8-9 wins that won't be a good sign.

That's all very reasonable. Questions about whether we're trending up/down, or whether Kelly has hit his ceiling at ND, etc. are reasonable to ask. But I think we ought to acknowledge, even in criticism: (1) that objective statistical models rank us as a top-10 program over Kelly's tenure; and (2) that the tire fire Kelly inherited from Weis was nowhere close to a top-10 program.

OF course he is a good coach and more. Do be a REALLY good coach he would know when he has made a mistake, admit it and fix it. BVG is still there and Schmidt started all year. Other coaches have done a lot more with less but ND has to play a bowl game with every game they play as others mark ND as their biggest game every year. Yes he is a good coach but the bets coaches only keep the best assistants available. Will anyone say BVR is a good DC? Not many so if that is the case is Kelly that good a coach if he is keeping BVG who at best has put a vey inconsistent product on the field.

Then we would still have a ridiculous thread like this with coaches whom aren't the top winning percentage type that we've got.

How is ND ranked worse in '12 than in '11 when we went to the title in '12??? The only way that would be possible is if ND did better in the year 5 years before '12 than they actually did in '12.

That and/or their efficiency was worse.

I just don't get how any calculation can conclude in a drop of one spot by replacing ND worst season ever (2007) with their best season in decades (2012).

It's not a big deal, just annoyed me a bit.

Did you actually read how the rankings were calculated? It is pretty easy to conceive 2 seasons where in season A has a higher ranking and a poorer record than season B where you won it all.

Top 10 coaches at producing NFL players.

Top 10 coaches at producing NFL players.

Some important factoids for pro and anti Kelly factions. Please note that the five years used to select, included BK's first years at ND. That notwithstanding, ND is not a bad place if you have NFL aspirations :

Here are the top-10 coaches ranked by conversion percentage, via Pick Six Previews:

1. UCLA’s Jim Mora – 56%
2. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney – 53%
3. Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh – 46%
4. TCU’s Gary Patterson – 43%
5. Alabama’s Nick Saban – 38%
6. FSU’s Jimbo Fisher – 37%
6. Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen – 37.5%
8. Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly – 35%
9. Ohio State’s Urban Meyer – 34%
9. Miami’s Mark Richt – 34%

Note : this is based upon number of four and five star players recruited.

Bring Urban or Saban here and the name of this thread will only change to "No one can win at ND".

They know better than to come here and face the extra rigours. We actually have a great coach that WANTS to be here.
