All the rain fall before the winds compound the problem - uprooted trees are kind of a serious pain in the ass.

I saw a loop video of an anchor getting blasted by a stop sign. Idk if it was even real, but I laughed hysterically. Giant pet peeve of mine when news anchors do that shit.

Edit: Maybe it's from a different storm. But still...funny to me.

You can't coach this...that's god given talent right there!

Cracks right I heard 115 mph too. The intercoastal swelled up Nova Rd in Port Orange which is damn near 1.5 miles from the intercoastal....or was. I just spoke with a Police Officer that was rolling through the neighborhood and he said my neighborhood had fared the best he had seen all day. But thanks to Wiz and his building code as well as meteorological expertise we are all just enjoying a big ole nuthingburger here.

Well we are still trying to gather Intel on the damage from people that stayed. The eye appeared to stay offshore but as expected Charleston harbor is currently seeing sustained 75+ winds. The eye also seems to be distorting and breaking down and should weaken much more today. Also as expected the storm surge was the highest since Hugo and downtown is flooded everywhere. Parts of Dorchester county are severely flooded as well. The East Cooper area saw significant flooding along the marshes near Boone Hall and thr intercoastal waterway. The Old village is REKT. My neighborhood is listed as impassable due to flooding so. We are not sure what we will be coming home to right now.

Our police officers are live streaming their observations as they drive around which is awesome. There are trees down randomly but not extensively. We do have 437000 power outages in the state. We won't be able to return home until Monday at the earliest.

When I get more time I will post some of the local nothingburgers.

Oh. I did come across this this morning. It talks about how judging a storm based on just wind speed is not the best way to do so and that the IKE model might be a better and more coherent way to do so but it just needs to be more widespread in its used and a bit better refined. Some people might remember that Sandy was a Cat 1 storm but due to its size and power it had an IKE value that mmuch more accurately described its powers and nothingburgers. I am thinking that Drudge and his acolytes might want to research things before they spout off conspiracy theories and such

I am on hour twenty five of no power. Duke is still assessing damage - no time table for it coming back on.

I hope your house is OK Cack. My sales guy's neighborhood in Summerville has 6' of water in it.

Heard the Myrtle Beach area got it pretty bad too.

Sorry to hear that. Hope they get you back online soon. Luckily it's not the dead of summer.

We are gonna try to go back today but not sure when. I stocked up gas and propane before we left so we should be able to cope without power for a few days.

Yeah. The weather is perfect for a power outage.

Do you know if you can get to your home yet?

I believe so now. I26EB south of Cola is already backing up but the major roads are all open into and out of Charleston. Don't think I want to chance the back roads today though.

A few notes:
I bailed to my twin sister's house Thursday night since she's in a less flood prone area.

The power blinked a few times, but only enough to wreak havoc with the digital clocks on the stove, refrigerator, microwave, etc. I'm three blocks from the St. John's river and was told that my area was vulnerable to storm surge.

The sustained winds at the eye wall were in the 120 to 130 mph range. The eye moved a bit east as it crawled up the coast and was 35 miles off shore so the outer band winds and gusts were much lower but still damaging. Areas closer to the coast or on coastal islands fared better than feared, but still took a gut punch. Had Matthew jogged west rather than east it would have been a whole 'nother kettle of garbanzo beans.

My older sister's area didn't fare so well. Trees went down and they haven't had power since early Friday.

Don't downplay the dire nature of warnings and requests/orders to evacuate. They are not a "boy who cried wolf" scenario. They are "better safe than sorry" and "an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure."

I agree that the reporters and crews that hang out in dangerous weather to get "the shot" while demonstrating the "do as I say, not as I do" approach is an absurdity on top of an idiocy. I assume that there's a monetary incentive for being such damn fools.

Thanks Cack (good to know that you're safe and sound – at least physically) and BGIF for your thoughts. BGIF: I'll try to keep you posted.

Tweet from the City of Charleston:
Civil War shells uncovered by storm on Folly Beach will be detonated in place between 5:30-8 tonight. May be heard in surrounding areas.
@CityCharleston that is the most Charleston problem ever

Finally made it home. All in all everything is good. I did lose half of my backyard fence from off property trees falling on it. I also have about six trees (10-16" diameter) that have been uprooted but did not fall all the way over. They will have to come down though because they will hit the house if they do. Looks like I did get some water intrusion in the garage and I will have to replace some drywall and baseboards in the room adjoining the garage. But the roof was tight with no damage and no leaks. So yay!

Well gentlemen I am going to to unpack the truck and fire up the chainsaw.

Great to hear that the family is unharmed and that hearth and home have only been dinged.

Time for some manly-man time with the Stihl.
