I've watched this all day. It has been amazing. Students protesting, politicians tweeting their displeasure with the hire, businesses letting Schiano know he isn't welcome, and an absolute Twitter storm. At this point there is no way Schiano becomes coach and I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the end of the AD (Currie).

Fucking crazytown. "Businesses letting Schiano know he isn't welcome?"
Why? Because he's not Jon Gruden? Schiano's a good coach, Gruden ain't coming. And now anyone worth a damn is going to look at that situation and hightail it to any of the six or eight other open jobs that are just as good as Tennessee.

It’s because of his alleged knowledge of Sandusky raping young boys.

Ah. That does seem a more appropriate thing to get worked up about. Though apparently Urban Meyer has made his peace with it.

I don't want to pretend to know people's real motivations, but I really hope they are truly outraged with this and not just using it as ammo because they aren't happy they got Greg instead of Gruden...

Schiano is a dirt bag and he shouldn't be allowed in college athletics at all IMO but he has never been convicted of anything and Tenn fan base seems to be dying on morality when they hired Kiffin

It's 100% the later. I don't particularly have an issue with it because I think this board would be doing the same thing under the circumstances. But yeah its a football issue with a good real world excuse to play the moral card.

Florida - Jim McElwain is a client of Jimmy Sexton, sports agent, as is Dan Mullen. Last September, Florida hired then Mississippi State AD, Scott Strickland, as their AD. Former Florida HC Will Muschamp is a Sexton client.
Tennessee - Butch Jones is a Jimmy Sexton client as is Greg Schiano. UT's three HCs previous to Jones (Fulmer, Kiffin and Dooley) were Sexton clients. David Cutcliff is a Sexton client.
Ole Miss - Hugh Freeze is a Sexton client. Matt Luke, Ms's interim HC, is a Sexton client and has been named their permanent HC. Butch Jones was rumored to be in consideration for the HC job.
Mississippi State - As noted, Dan Mullen is a Sexton client. This past February, Sexton negotiated a four year contract extension for Mullen with MSU through February 2021. Three names mentioned in their coaching search - Lane Kiffin, Mike Norvell and Chad Morris - are Sexton clients.

Sexton, of course, negotiated the buyouts of Freeze, McElwain, Jones.

I think it's really embarrassing for UT. Just like I was really embarrassed of our fan base with the off season run at getting BK fired. In the UT case it's absolutely that they didn't want Schiano because of football reasons and the fan base went wild(lead by scumbag Clay Travis) because of unfounded accusations of Schiano's involvement at PSU. I wouldn't want him to be the head coach at ND, but running his name through the mud the way the UT fans have is disgusting.

I am really curious as to how this social media witch hunt effects the coaching search going forward.

College football coaches owed more than $60 million in buyouts after run of firings

For some perspective on what $60 million currently means in the world of major-college sports, consider this: In 2015-16, the most recent year for which schools’ financial reports to the NCAA are available, 177 of 230 Division I public schools said they spent less than $60 million on their entire athletics programs.

The $60 million buyout figure doesn’t take into account amounts that will come off some schools’ books as fired coaches fulfill obligations to find new jobs that will provide income offsetting what they currently are owed.

However, the toteboard also doesn’t take into account:

-- Florida’s as-yet-unannounced settlement with Jim McElwain, who departed Oct. 29.

-- Amounts that will need to be paid to assistant coaches who are not retained, also potentially subject to those coaches’ obligations to get subsequent jobs. In an era when dozens of assistants are being paid more than $600,000 annually and multi-year contracts have become routine, these payouts can become multi-million-dollar propositions.

-- Buyouts by Arkansas and Nebraska to athletics directors whose firings this fall largely revolved around a lack of success in football and were followed by head coaches’ firings.

This weekend brought the ousters of Arkansas’ Bret Bielema, Nebraska’s Mike Riley, Arizona State’s Todd Graham and Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin. That quartet alone is owed a combined $35.2 million.

I'm super curious to see how this Kelly/UCLA thing plays out:

-My gut tells me he has to hit success right off the bat and if he struggles to 5-7 wins in year one he may have great difficulty moving forward.
-IF he does have success early does he stay long term or is this an avenue to something else?

Does Robert Mueller know about this incestuous cabal? Fulmer, Kiffin, Dooley, Jones, AND Schiano? There must be a Russian connection with this must money in play and the Vols keep shopping in the same store despite the same lack of success? Hmm, what does Trump know and when did he know it?

I don't understand why there is not more base pay with performance bonuses to help neuter some of this buyout sticker shock. I fully understand why coaches negotiate it out but damn it if the schools don't have a say in it. If the coach is so damn good shouldn't they agree to put up or shut up on some level? Winning is worth more - so why don't they incentivize it more directly?

Chip Kelly interests me. I’m wondering where he fits in and how he adapts to the current game and defenses. There’s an awful lot of teams that play fast since he left and a blueprint to deal with it a lot better. I don’t think he ever should have left the college game. We shall see soon enough.
