Why would they do away with Irish Invasion? I feel it was gaining momentum as a big summer event. As the team gets better and more recognition so will it's camps like Friday Night Lights, The BBQ, etc. Bummed if they are doing away with the title.

Think they want to do something more personal like the BBQ but not having a name for the event is a mistake.

You don't need II with the ability to have summer OVs... the entire point of II was to put on an event that would get people to visit that otherwise might be unlikely due to distance.

They mentioned on the II podcast they wanted to get a more personal event where recruits could just enjoy themselves and not have to work out in order to receive an offer etc...something that is still being worked out i guess

Yeah if u start Google with "Sears cu". Sears cup isn't even one of the recommended searches.

Apparently, this isn't that widely celebrated nationally. But maybe that's Crusader's point I'm not real sure.

it hasn't been called the Sears Cup for decades right?

That just gave me a visual of NDC.

What the fuck is the Sears cup?

The Director's Cup is the pinnacle for Athletic Departments. It may not be widely known to the general public because it isn't nationally branded like the Capitol One Cup but the Director's Cup is given by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors. Basically the prize rewarded by one of your peers. It's a BIG deal for athletic departments. Guaranteed if ND ever wins one you will not stop hearing the end of it from the athletic department.

Stanford has won every year since 1995, North Carolina won the inaugural one in 1994. Of course, it's not necessarily weighted by sport so winning a football national championship gets you 100 points, the same as winning a golf national championship. Schools also receive points based on national finish in each respective sport. Of course, by offering 35+ varsity sports, Stanford has more opportunity to score cumulative points than say Wake Forest with 9 varsity sports.

It's currently branded by Learfield, formerly by Sears so some people know it as the Sears Director's Cup but that sponsorship ended almost 15 years ago.

I know it's early, but USC at 36th overall class??

Precisely what I was saying 1-2 months back when the ND fanbase was losing their collective shit about recruiting. It could be much worse. With that said, they'll get their players, they always do.

Also, Chip Kelly at UCLA is holding a big ZERO in the recruit column. His first full cycle at the helm and this can't be the start he was hoping for. Imagine what this board would look like with similar results for the 19' class, lol.

I'm sure they'll cap their class on national signing day with 3+ 5 stars. They always grab the local Cali/polynesian talent near the end.

Their class have been: #4, #4, #10, #2 over the past 4 years. It's incredible how much they've underperformed given their talent. They sign top 5 players at multiple positions every year.

I know it's wrong.....but every time I think of a 5 star California recruit Max Redfield pops into my brain. Meaning I would rather a 4 star Ohio or Pennsylvania Kid that a 5 star Cali kid.

Very, VERY early. They're favored to pick up three 5* kids at the moment.

It's interesting how that's the general feeling, when it isn't our team that ranks 36th, lol.
It was even earlier 1-2 months ago.............

Did some research into this because I was curious, and UCLA is apparently trying a "Money Ball"-esque system with long evaluation and analytics and have gotten much, much more selective in their offers. They've only offered 59 kids so far. By comparison, we've offered 190.

It'll be interesting to see if it works out.

Trying to hook up with the Phil Knight of SoCal.

.

This has to back fire. They will have to hit on every other prospect to get a class of 25.

This is super interesting, and in a sense I totally get why they're doing it:
1. Chip Kelly HATES typical "recruiting."
2. The more guys you can get senior film on, the better. You want as much information as possible, some people plateau and others make huge strides. Even if you can't get through senior film, getting through the summer evaluation period and those camps is very valuable.

The problem is that when 80% of top kids will be committed before the winter they are going to be very reliant on flips to fill out the class... and that's living very dangerously.

Sounds like they're setting themselves up for massive failure.

Chip might need to get his own house in order and put a good product out before he can make his strides in recruiting.

As far as comparing ND vs USC in recruiting and early rankings, its an apple to an orange, imo. ND fans might have more patience if we did this
#4, #4, #10, #2 over the past 4 years
and we sat in middle of a hot bed for recruiting, neither of those is the case.

I wouldn't say they underperformed at all unless you're saying they should be in the playoffs. The last two years (Clay's full years as coach) they went 10-3 and 11-3.

2016 they won the Rose bowl finishing 3rd and 2017 they won the PAC-12 finishing 12th.

This year the 1st 4th ranked class should be juniors followed by sophomores for the second 4th ranked class. If Clay has done this before these top classes have had a chance to blossom then lookout for this year and the coming years.

Yeah. Our drubbing of them this past season aside, USC has actually been pretty good the last couple years. They should be for the next few, too.

Yeah, I was explicitly stating they should've been in the playoffs. They've average about the 5th best class over those 4 years and their #2 class are now seniors, their #10 class juniors, etc.

They've had loads of talent and I rarely remember them actually challenging for a playoff spot because they haven't won the pac-12.
