Since we're hearing early reports are that Shayne Simon is the real deal holyfield, should we start hoping he's the rover? Simon, Tranquil and Coney sound like a crazy good lineup, coupled with our front four and Love/Pride combo and hopefully an upgrade at safety....

STOP IT! I'm starting to get excited and that's bad for my health.

Unless JOK moves somewhere else, I'll quietly hope Simon plays in only 4 games lol. If he is absolutely better than a Bilal and/or JOK, then I'm fine. If Bilal hasn't figured it out, bring on the youth.

Alright, somebody tell me the unconfirmed reports coming out of summer camp.

I've got a bad ND itch and the doctor said teh only cure is more cowbell. Anyone have connections inside that care to spill the early reports on freshmen or other players that are looking ready for primetime?

Just remember that all good reports inevitably lead to this There's no escaping destiny as an ND fan

folks on II podcast said Shayne Simon is the real deal judging by first impressions inside the Gug. His S+C numbers are meant to be very very impressive.

In addition to Simon, they also mentioned hearing good things about Bo Bauer, Jack Lamb, Houston Griffith and Derrik Allen. Ja'Mion Franklin and DJ Brown were added in a post by Prister on Friday the 13th. And since there is very little position work being done with coaches, this is almost exclusively S&C based.

I thought the their position on Lamb was a double edged sword. Though they like his potential athletic upside, they sounded like he 100% needs to redshirt whereas Bauer has been a big surprise all around and the most game ready of all the Fr. LB's.

I want to re-read Bauer's thread now. I want to refresh my memory on my position on him throughout his entire recruitment.

It was, athletically gifted but physically behind.

On Bauer, it'll be interesting to see how his career plays out. As he's a little bit more of a throwback MLB with a lot of, at least to this point, lighter/more athletic LB's coming in with/behind him. In the early stages, that seems to be working to his advantage. Rivals liked him quite a bit #159 and 247 not so much at #495.

He didn't come in jacked up like I thought he would. Balis measured him in at 6-2.75/215. I just liked how he attacked gaps/blockers/RB/whatever was in front of him. He recognized/reacted with film speed. So he's not your new aged 7v7 LB. I'm ok with that. If he's a faster/better Calabrese, that's what the roster needs with the make up of the other LB prospects being the 7v7 types.

Scoobie Wright showed CFB what a slow Mike can do when he's got a 5 star nose for the ball.

Oddly enough, him and Jack are listed at the same weight. Either that's not accurate or that extra inch for Lamb makes it look completely different.

Early returns are this seems to be a floor. Which I'd take when you include it with Simon, Lamb, OO, Kiser, and Ekwonu in back to back classes.

Idk if I missed it posted anywhere else, but Sampson did a Q&A with BK as his first assignment with the Athletic.

Some interesting stuff in there. There's the usual "this is year two of the new me," blah blah blah, but there's some actual good content in terms of the team and program.

The new redshirt rule is going to be used strategically to help with the November blues. Any freshmen that are on the scout team and prove that they aren't useless will be used to supplement bodies, especially on special teams, during the last four regular season games of the year. That should help keep other guys fresh, and limit the "Body Blow" fallback a little bit.

The new practice facility is basically the first step in an unannounced master plan. Once it's done, BK hopes the admin will see the need to move study tables, training tables, etc. into an adjoining building. He thinks the best way to keep the athletes as part of the regular student body is to use their football time more efficiently, and the best way to do that is to have a one-stop shop for everything. It seems counterproductive to the University's mandate that athletes remain regular students, but BK makes a good point that the less time players spend traveling place-to-place to fulfill athletic duties while getting treatment, eating, and studying, the more time they have with the regular student body overall.

Wimbush and Long are working on developing a tight-knit relationship on a personal level, because Brandon responds better when he's comfortable and has greater trust in the person leading him. That's kind of a "duh" moment, but the interesting tidbit to me is that it REALLY sounds like Long has 100% of the playcalling duties, and BK is retaining standard HC veto power, rather than trying to step in or overly influence things. Rather than talking about his own relationship with Wimbush, he's stressing how intelligent Long is as a playcaller, and how he and Brandon are building a good relationship. No mention of BK trying to foster that himself, which read to me like BK knows Long is the head honcho on offense.

Did I read that right? We will wait to use our scout team players the last 4 games of the year? I would think Pitt, Navy, Northwestern and Syracuse would be good games, later in season to be able to put in some "Non-Useless" guys in to help rest the 2 deep without potentially losing the game. I would think VT, Stanford, FSU we would want our 2 deep majority of the time. More or less, deeper rotations in the Off and Def line and LB units.

I'm not BK though so I am sure he has a much better idea. I do like the later use approach versus early in season.

Yeah I didn't do a good job of relaying what I heard. They may use those guys strategically throughout the year at opportune times to keep the main body fresh for key games, with an eye toward November specifically.

Some guys may use their four games worth of special teams work earlier, while some might be groomed to fill specific roles in November, while other may be used here-and-there as needed.

That's just for the guys that they want to "save," though, where they will fill in strategically for four games. I'm sure there will be a decent number of freshman that are active the entire season.

I personally love that the staff is already using this new rule strategically. Not every freshman will need to play 12 games but can still contribute when they are needed throughout the season without fear of losing that redshirt status. I think this keeps them more engaged throughout the year within the practice and game prep and will pay dividends in the future when it's their turn to step up into larger roles.

This may be false hope but I also think this helps cut down on some transfers in the future.

As to Bauer: I'm hoping for Martini 2.0. A quick-instincts-at-the-snap inside LB is gold (regardless of the notorious eye-test.)

I don't think the intent would be to save them until then. I would think they will try to determine which freshmen would be better served playing in certain games and other freshmen in other games so as to give the 1st and 2nd stringers more rest throughout the season and be fresher at the end of the season.

was thinking the new redshirt rule probably beckons the death of the walk-on's seeing much playing time in future college football seasons.

How much non-garbage playing time to most walk-ons ever see though? Even on special teams we've been running a lot of freshmen out there in recent years.

I like the idea of holding back a few freshmen on D to be shock troops in November. Especially against Navy.
