Fuck Flutie. How does NBC keep stickin' us with former rivals for commentators?
Here's the Wiki list of NBC Announcers that covered ND games. A lot of them are veteran sportscasters that have worked a lot of places.
Keep in mind when AD Rosenthal negotiated the contract with NBC, ND President Malloy was firmly opposed to an ND connection behind a mike. ND has always had a love/hate relationship with successful coaches being "bigger than the university" and did not want a surrogate Rockne, Leahy, nor Holtz image. NBC actively pursued ND after the major college contract talks broke down, likewise did not want to be known as The Notre Dame Network. They still wanted to pursue other potential contracts like the major conferences (who ended up elsewhere). So wanted an aura of independence. Neither party wanted an ND "homer". In the process they actually went in the other direction, "rooting for the other team".
I've highlighted the football players from ND rivals and the only ND connection, Criqui. Most of the rivals announcers do/did color. Haden and Flutie have the longest relationship. I always though Haden a good choice with the "arms length" that ND and NBC both wanted. I thought Haden presented a neutral approach. I know there are some other fans that strongly disagree with my assessment. I've also felt the Flutie is the the most biased announcer since Collinsworth and Dockery expressed glee at any ND misfortune.
