Flutie sucks balls. But NBC generally is fine. If we were to sign a deal with ABC/ESPN we'd be relegated to noon kickoffs on the Deuce for all but the big games. Probably get fucking Bob Davie calling most of them (I know he has a coaching job now but he'd do TV on the side just to screw with us).
Stick with NBC. Just bring back Mayock.

There's an NBC/commentary thread somewhere, but it boils down to this:

Flutie is a goddamn chatter box when ND is fucking up and the opponent is winning.

When ND is playing well, he's nearly silent in his "commentary."

That tells the whole story, for me.

Perhaps that's just NBC trying to motivate ND to win some goddamn games. Maybe they do care...

supposedly i heard we have bob costas to commentate if dan or doug are out.
They would not put Dan and Bob in the both together unless they added a third, color guy. Even then, wouldn't make sense. We're not getting Costas, but if we did, it would only be to replace Dan.

I actually love the NBA games. I think Flutie sucks but outside of him, I enjoy it more than ESPN. ABC is the only other channel I actually enjoy watching a game on as much. I know ABC and ESPN are the same but it just feels different for some reason.

Again, Flutie sucks

Here's the Wiki list of NBC Announcers that covered ND games. A lot of them are veteran sportscasters that have worked a lot of places.

Keep in mind when AD Rosenthal negotiated the contract with NBC, ND President Malloy was firmly opposed to an ND connection behind a mike. ND has always had a love/hate relationship with successful coaches being "bigger than the university" and did not want a surrogate Rockne, Leahy, nor Holtz image. NBC actively pursued ND after the major college contract talks broke down, likewise did not want to be known as The Notre Dame Network. They still wanted to pursue other potential contracts like the major conferences (who ended up elsewhere). So wanted an aura of independence. Neither party wanted an ND "homer". In the process they actually went in the other direction, "rooting for the other team".

I've highlighted the football players from ND rivals and the only ND connection, Criqui. Most of the rivals announcers do/did color. Haden and Flutie have the longest relationship. I always though Haden a good choice with the "arms length" that ND and NBC both wanted. I thought Haden presented a neutral approach. I know there are some other fans that strongly disagree with my assessment. I've also felt the Flutie is the the most biased announcer since Collinsworth and Dockery expressed glee at any ND misfortune.

Didn't want to bump individual players' threads with speculation on redshirts, but from 18 Stripes "Redshirt or Not to Redshirt"

WR Javon McKinley
DE Julian Okwara
LB Jamir Jones
S Alohi Gilman

McKinley, Okwara, and Jones combined for 31 snaps from scrimmage last year as true freshmen. They spent much more time on special teams, though. Neither Jones or McKinley look like they will need to play, and neither was featured on special teams coverage units during Saturday’s practice. Will they actually try the old sophomore redshirt with these two?

Okwara is a long shot to redshirt as he’s in the mix at defensive end–probably in line for 50 or 60 snaps over the season–plus he’s been working with the special teams return unit. He’ll likely be a junior in 2018 with fewer than 100 career snaps but so it goes.

Gilman is still waiting on his waiver from the NCAA and might be forced to sit out after a transfer from Navy. This late in the process it might not be the worst thing for his long-term future at Notre Dame to redshirt.

Most interesting bit is in bold.

McKinley and Jamir Jones both played special teams last year.

In practice open to the media, neither was on special teams, and neither factors into the depth chart at their positions at the moment.

Perhaps Wimbush can preach the wisdom of the Sophomore Redshirt?

PA, care to elaborate?

They basically just say that Alize is pretty close to ending up a career bust. That Kelly has shown with Stepherson that talent doesn't automatically guarantee you a spot. They also say that Alize doesn't have the luxury of being the automatic best option if he doesn't start to perform at a high level in fall camp because the two freshmen TEs have All-American potential and are hungry.

grey basically covered it...but basically also stated he has been LAZY and there are hints of potentially knowing what to say/do regarding "injuries" to be able to sit out practice...i also think i heard them say he had this in high school as well....just shocking to me as i thought he was a work horse

it was just a huge difference from what we were hearing from spring and opening of camp

I was shocked to hear this too, especially because on twitter he appears to be more all in than anyone. Just goes to show talk is cheap.

From what I heard, they were putting it lightly on ISD.

Some of yall put too much into what you hear from the guys on ISD. I like em too, but some of you sound like you're ready to throw the young man to the wolves just because one power hour commentary.

This is what is wrong with college sports reporting. No wonder BK doesn't want these mf'ers in fall camp.

There's not much else to go on. There's the practice reports from this year, and his career 13 receptions. I'd agree with you if he had earned the benefit of the doubt based on past years. But he didn't really do anything his first year, was ineligible his 2nd year (goes along with being lazy), and now injured and allegedly being lazy through practice in his 3rd.

I think he can turn it around, though. He does have talent, and even if he's practicing poorly, maybe he's a gamer. It's not fair to everyone to be a gamer, but sometimes people just are.

I admit I put too much into his tweets. He's always so positive and pro-ND/team/success that I assumed he's just killing it in workouts and practice.

And also to be fair, the two ISD guys said he's never done anything in practice to show that he's going to be a player, and Jamie disagreed completely and said he's seen him make plays.

This is true. I was very surprised at how negative they all sounded. I'll put it this way, I often have them on in the background and stop listening in the middle of a subject. Today, I actually had to stop and make sure to listen closely to be sure they were still talking about Mack. It was really negative.
