Thanks..........That's a start, but how many of those occurred where the play was called in late and where was the play clock was in relation to the false start?

Respectfully, because I don't know for sure... CBK?

I'm getting old... likely 15 - 20 years older than the average poster on this board. Admittedly, I'm not a Googleologist... but they are telling me we didn't make the Top 25? Okay, I can see some of that (with all the coaching and player changes in the last 12 months) but objectively, I think we only got a lot better.

New QB will be a variable for sure, but our offense has held steady or gotten better and I am certain that our defense only had one way to go... and I will not believe that it hasn't improved.

All things considered, I cannot believe we didn't crack 20 - 25 in the rankings. Probably where we should be, but if this team can come together I hope we can crack Top 15 by the third week. Drinking the kool-aid and having fun. Cheers!

Looks like Temple got more votes in some polls than we did.

Think about it this way.

Say we beat Temple soundly, and then lose to UGA, Stanford, USC, and Miami. We end up 8-4 and unranked.

But if Temple beats everyone on their schedule except us, the best of which are Navy and Houston, they'll be 11-1, having rattled off 11 straight wins. They'll be ranked higher, even if no one thinks they could beat UGA, Stanford, USC, or Miami.

We may know for a fact that they couldn't complete with us and did not, but they'd definitely end up ranked higher.

Long story short, rankings are often dumb once you are outside of the Top 5-10 teams.

And sometimes even when you're inside it, see texas a&m ranked there in all 3 (I believe) playoff polls.

And Iowa at #3 in 2015. They rattled off a series of wins early on but I could never figure out the love they got in the rankings... a few friends disagreed. I think Stanford set that record straight. That being said, I usually respect the top five and while I may not like the teams, I respect the quantification that got them into the rankings. Cheers!

Good call. If memory serves, Iowa beat one ranked or team with a winning record-- Northwestern.

The big ten was garbage...yet Iowa got love because, "P5 conference with the defending champs-- they must be a great team."

And on a sidenote, instances like this is where ND is/can be hurt by not being in a conference.

before week 4 or 5, rankings are bathroom reading, forum debating, and general arguments with friends with opposing allegiances to other teams - at least my take on it.

But, if one was to agree with the multitudes and believe, "There should be pre-season rankings.", just take the final rankings from the year before regardless of who graduated, left early, etc.

My $.02..... Clemson is the #1 team in the nation right now and Alabama #2 and so on. May sound dumb or irrelevant even if a team lost every starter from the year before, just my opinion. Until someone knocks off Clemson or Bama, they are 1 and 2 respectively down the line to 25.

FWIW... and it ain't worth much... when Texas beat us last year, I figured they had just beaten a Top 10 Team and deserved a Top 10 ranking.

That observation still kind of haunts me.

I think you are right, rankings become more meaningful mid-season. Cheers!

I'm glad we're not ranked, nor do I think we should be ranked. When you lose 8 games the previous season, you don't deserve to be ranked; I don't care who your QB is or how many staters are coming back. I would rank us in the 30-35 range. Make this team go out and earn a national rank. I think we're right where we should be.

Agree 100%. ND embarrassed themselves last year. Time to man up and earn it

In my experience, we tend to have better seasons when we start ranked low or unranked than when we start in the top ten. There's less pressure. Beat Georgia and we'll catch up just fine.

Not to derail the thread, but I'm totally going to derail the thread. On top of that, I'm unsure if this is even the proper thread, but General Team info is close enough to General Season info, so here goes. Has Flutie finally been booted from the commentary box? Has anything been announced regarding the hacks we have to listen to week in and week out on NBC?

Unfortunately, no. Weird thing is a lot of the grad school tailgates at ND got legitimately offended when i said he sucks last season. But they're wrong and Flutie sucks.

They're incredibly dense, then. Flutie openly roots for the opposing team. He does it to promote impartiality, but he's so anti-ND in his commentary, that he's actually heavily partial toward the opponent. It's a Notre Dame broadcast, NBC needs to treat it as such. People aren't tuning in to see the opposing team each week. They're tuning in to see the Irish. They don't want the person in the box to patronize them and point out every flaw with the Irish while simultaneously pointing out every positive thing about the other team. It's insane. It works me up more than most things in life, I hate to admit.

Man, ND needs to leave NBC ASAP. We pump in tons of revenue to them every football season, and what are we rewarded with? Some shoddy camera work and some of the most brutally, ear-rapingly bad commentary sports has to offer.

If NBC's best effort to get ND a quality broadcast team is Dan Hicks and Doug Flutie, then they need to be shown the door immediately. The product the last 20 years on the field has been luke-warm, but this goes beyond that. It's hot garbage.

There's an NBC/commentary thread somewhere, but it boils down to this:

Flutie is a goddamn chatter box when ND is fucking up and the opponent is winning.

When ND is playing well, he's nearly silent in his "commentary."

That tells the whole story, for me.

When ND plays a game (especially at night) on ESPN/ABC, it feels more significant based on the production quality and commentating skill. NBC games always feel Busch League in comparison, no matter how big the matchup IMO.

Yuuuuuup. Been in favor of moving our brand to another company for awhile now. The advantages that NBC provided over ESPN have eroded.

It's weird though. A few non-ND fan friends feel the opposite. They think the NBC games feel "bigger." I don't see it, and never have. Even the 93 FSU game, which had one of the best pregame montages ever, still felt watered down during actual gameplay in comparison to other great ND games on other channels.

Hopefully Univision. Get some soccer commentators and they will get anybody amped up

One time I had to watch the Spanish feed of a Bears-Broncos game. The dude was screaming at the top of his lungs, "tebow, Tebow, TEBOW!!!!!" anytime he did anything. It was epic.

Ugh....... remember that game. Bears are the only team I can think of who can repeatedly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory......

We've all been programed over the years to view out favorite team in the despicable way nbc presents it-very poor very slanted toward opponent and very NON NOTRE DAME. Its the issue plain and simple-I have listen to many Irish games from CBS and ESPN and even when the team is sub par there is much more respect shown and fair criticism. Example--many years ago ND vs Tenn in Knoxville and it was a bad Notre Dame team playing under Willingham when Todd Blackledge said-(in so many words) Notre Dame travels well and is not afraid of the big stage because its big stage every week for the Irish so Tenn better be prepared for a tough game. The comment was made regarding the enormous anti Notre Dame crowd---and Notre Dame won the game. Things like that are never said with the crappy stuff nbc spews out---they are bad and it needs to be said they are bad. It has been a blackmark against Notre Dame and much of the reason the country has a certain feeling about Notre Dame. If a fan of Notre Dame developes a ^%$##@ feeling about the team because of the way nbc presents it how do you think a neutral observer is affected. You don't need to join a conference you don't need to change much about this storied program just present the games with someone who is juiced up about being the presenter. NBC has put this program in a hole no matter how sub par the program has been for many years. Even in 2012 when it was one of the best Notre Dame teams ever allowing for their talent compared to other teams, that overachieving bunch did not get a fair shake from nbc. And now the coup de gras-Doug Flutie. He makes Chris Collins, Pat Haden, and the rest of the boys look like alums.
