For real though, what happened to the days when you could grab a 5-star QB and then not worry about stocking up more talent behind him?

USC made their mid 2000's dynasty work on plugging highly regarded 4th and 5th year QB's in. Hell, they had 5-star Matt Cassell stay at USC for four years, and he NEVER started.

That doesn't happen these days, anywhere. Kids don't have the patience to wait in an established system if they are highly regarded. The "Immediate Playing Time" thing is too prevalent for QB's to change the culture.

Can't believe we let Elliott go. This sucks

A big reason he was at ND was Bob Diaco. And we didn't have a spot for him on the field, but it sounds like Bob is giving him that chance.

I feel ya, Elliot is awesome, but I wish him the best.

What makes you think we let him go?

A) Kelly wanted Longo, or Quinn in that position. Read, all of Kelly's guys are getting squeezed out pretty fast and hard.

B) Diaco was one reason Elliott came. Elliott became being caught between this new staff, and the old Kelly staff, as he was really neither.

C) Elliott battled back from his kidney failure, as a result of the cancer drugs he was given, pretty well after his transplant, and probably never expected to be able to coach again.

D) With Elko loving to coach safeties, Lyght, and ND bringing Tom Rees on as the potential tenth coach, there really wasn't much of a future for any db coach this year. And if Bobby wanted to get back on the field, now is the time. It had to start this coming season. As much as he is loved in South Bend, it just couldn't be done.

E) look for real changes with the analyst position in the not too distant future.

Speaking of your point E, Jeff Burris will no longer be at ND. He just posted a goodbye message to his players.

I don't give a shit if you make him an analyst or coach whatever gd position he wants to frankly. The man hasn't only coached secondary in his career. He has coached linebackers, TE's, special teams and was the defensive coordinator at several stops. The man has coached in 18 bowl games and led some incredible defenses like the '02 Iowa team. He was completely squandered by this staff and was vastly under appreciated by this fan base. We're supposed to be happy cuz Light is here? I love Light, but what the hell has he done as a coach to unseat a guy like Elliott? It's absurd.

Elliott traveled to Nebraska for an interview and got the job. He went from an analyst at ND to on field position under his buddy Bob Diaco. He had lost/gave up his on field job a couple of years ago because of health issues and was kept on ND's staff.

I got it you don't like Lyght but repeating bogs question:

Notre Dame outside linebackers coach Bob Elliott is expected to move to an off-field role according to sources.

Elliott, 61, has been an assistant for the Fighting Irish the past three seasons, the first two as safeties coach. He has battled health-related issues throughout his 36-year coaching career, undergoing a bone marrow transplant for a rare form of blood cancer in 1998 and a kidney transplant in February 2013.

Wasn't one of Elliott's main duties the last two seasons to spend extra time putting a defensive gameplan together for the triple option.....

Elliott left Iowa in 1998.

It's too bad about Elliott but if he wanted an on-field position and couldn't get one at ND amid all the turnover, it's probably for the best that he move on. It'll be OK.

I think the play of the freshman CB's this year pretty much answers that question.

First of all, I specifically said that I like Lyght. So don't put words in my mouth. Secondly, what does Elliott's health concerns have to do with whether Lyght is qualified more than Elliott? Finally, it certainly doesn't mean that Elliott isn't capable, as he's going to a major program to coach.

Typo on my end. Meant his '02 Kansas State team. Who lead all of college football in scoring defense and was 2nd in total defense.

Well I won't need my blue pill today. Good to see they're having fun with the work. Dexter Williams looks like a 3rd year NFL RB.

Looks like all the players received this "Valentines Day" themed message either prior/following this mornings workout. Not sure how their workout has anything to do with the cutout hearts they all received, but it sure has everybody fired up. Balis seems to have these guys hungry and excited for 2017. I'd like to know what the message was symbolizing.

Balis is trying to teach them how to win in the trenches, Mola Ram style.
