I love taking any opportunity to post this clip because it rules.

I love that movie so much. It's the perfect Oceans 11 redneck baby cousin. I wish they would do another one.

Also Riley Keough was trashy and smokin hot in that movie.

Same here. Very poor and inconsistent usage of dragons on both sides. Why not more catapults. Why not use more fire in every phase. Why weren't the pits wider. Has nobody in Westeros ever used burning oil vs castle sieges? Could they use the leftover dragon glass shards in some type of bombs or something. Can they be at least smart enough to copy CL and have some big crossbows to fight the dead dragon and whoever is riding it. I would never higher D&D to plan my war... and why didn't Tyrion at least secure some wildfire to bring back to WF when he was getting lied to by his sis.

Seems they only had so much time to prepare, I was a little surprised with how much defense they were able to prep for the time that was given. As far as burning oil im not sure that would have worked against the dead. The Big crossbow (Scorpio) I believe is still hidden in KL and will end up taking down a dragon or two before the show is over

It's supposed to be the Long Night. You want that brightened? That ruins the whole atmosphere. This is one of the only really good calls of the episode in my opinion.

Created:
Better atmosphere
Better understanding of the "confusion" the soldiers would have
Better fire contrast

I really wish they would have brightened the whole episode.

https://www.unilad.co.uk/film-and-t...-brightened-scenes-from-battle-of-winterfell/

So much detail. The dragon fight is glorious.

Seeing the dragon fight like that was pretty cool.

But when I scrolled down and watched the picture-in-picture comparison, my TV was not that dark. Idk if it auto brightened or not (is that even a thing?) What I saw was dark, just not to that extent. Seems to be exaggerated on that website to make a point.

Anyways, I get why they made it so dark. They probably could've made it a touch brighter. However, showing it as bright as what those videos are showing would've taken away from the mood too much, imo. A nice middle ground would've been fantastic.

This is where I'm at. It was hard to see details in the undead horde when they charged, and when the Dothraki and horses were returning after their charge, but I saw most of the details during the dragon fight...

I remember wondering which dragon had been tearing into the other's chest, and I remember seeing Jon nearly get clawed and then have his cape ripped off.

Would've liked to see the shots of the formations brightened, like the picture they brightened of Greyworm and the Unsullied.

Just struggle to buy that they didn't have time. They knew they were coming for a long time, wasn't just when they guys made it back from the wall. They had time to take a trip to Kings Landing to warn CL and seek her support, and then before the battle, had times to chill out and tell stories. All those Dothraki and Unsullied could have dug more pits, and wider pits while they were making all those weapons. I don't think building another Scorpio would have taken all that long. The burning oil (on fire) would have worked awesome against the wights. Biggest thing to me though is the inconsistent use of dragons. They should have lighting up the wights full time.

Like many people, I found last weeks episode to be narratively unsatisfying for several reasons. So, in a desperate attempt to rationalize nearly a decade of cinematic buildup, I've 'figured out' how the season will end.

Episode 4

The living celebrate their victory and mourn those they lost. Preparations are made for the march on Kings Landing. The army moves south while those remaining at Winterfell begin gathering bodies to burn. After the army is gone, the Night King returns, the wights rise and kill everyone at Winterfell. There are a few possibilities how the NK could return. Maybe Bran/TER becomes the new NK. Maybe Arya truly became No One in Braavos and when the NK touched her he was able to take control. Maybe the NK just re- coalesces because he's not that easy to kill. Azor Ahai failed twice before he forged Lightbringer. Maybe Arya represents the blade tempered in water. A good first attempt, but insufficient.

Episode 5

The main characters travel south with the army. They gain some support on the way to KL, but not much. Many don't believe the stories of the dead marching on Winterfell. With an army smaller than they had hoped, they begin the siege of KL. The Army of the Dead also heads south. While the living can move faster, the AotD can march 24 hours a day. After stopping to murder raise every town and castle in their path, the NK arrives at KL with a much larger AotD a few days after Daenerys' siege begins. Daenerys' army is trapped between the walls of KL and the Dead. Jamie enters the city to negotiate with Cersei. He begs her to open the gate and allow the living in so they can all face the Walkers together. She refuses. She hopes that the NK will destroy Daenerys and her army and believes that KL can defend itself against the NK. Jamie kills her and takes control of the city. He opens the gates and the living all prepare to face the dead together. The true Battle for the Dawn begins. (If the Lightbringer pattern is being used, then Jamie will make attempt #2 to kill the NK - and fail.)

Episode 6

The dead have overrun the walls. Several main characters die. Daenerys learns about the Wildfire buried beneath the city. She would rather burn the city and all its inhabitants than let the NK win. Jon doesn't think exploding everyone is a good idea. Daenerys doesn't care. BURN THEM ALL. Jon kills Daenerys. Lightbringer is fully formed. Jon kills the NK for real. Epilogue.

This would fix everything. I'm sad that this almost certainly won't be how it ends.

Fuck this would be great.

At this point that would be a much better ending than what we are probably going to get.

The Long Night? It was a long couple of hours. I watched it all again today, brightened, and to see the details in the battles. Actually being able to make out who was fighting? I don't need the atmosphere, I don't need to understand the confusion, I could see the hopelessness of it all when the undead horde rushed in. What I wanted to see was the actors acting and fighting and CGI dragons firing and biting each other. The expressions on some of their faces were missed because it was too dark.

Generally it was hard to follow what was going on, outside of just a battle. The crypts were just a shit show.

I think they failed and like 90% of people who watched it complained about it. So as far as their paying customers went, no matter what effect they were going for, they failed. Yet still defended it.

I don't know how you compare these pics:

4-2__700.webp

One is too dark, one is too light, there is a middle ground here.

I feel bad for the VFX artists that spent hundreds of hours on these scenes only to have no one appreciate them because of a dumb decision.

It was definitely too dark on my screen. Could've been 15% lighter and much more enjoyable. Since I went back and changed the settings for the 2nd viewing it was far better.

Someone was ready for the orgy scene,... just in case...

Always be prepared...

Someone mentioned Dynamic mode, but my Dynamic mode is darker than my Movie mode. I've have it set to User, with my own tweaks. I'm sure I could tweak it more, but it wasn't near as dark as the picks posted.

That was one of the settings I turned off. I actually found Dynamic to be a root cause of the extremely dark picture.

These are all pretty ridiculous adjustments to have to make just to watch an episode. I had to turn every light downstairs off just to see it, and that's never happened for any other movie or TV show.

preset settings for your TV wont make a big difference they generally go too bright or too dark, you need to have your TV professionally calibrated. Never thought it was too dark while watching.

I never understood the complaints about too dark until I watched some clips on YouTube in the light. I had no problem without calibrating any settings on my TV, but I also turned all the lights off in the room for the episode. Think that is the solution to lighting issues

Our Grandkids won’t believe how hard we had it. “...and then, Grampa had to get out of his chair and manually turn off all the lights...” I can just imagine the look of horror on the poor kids.
