I think some overstate the value of a prestigious degree. It's much more about how engaged in your education you are. Alabama's football program has actually made the entire program more popular, and I've heard their applications have skyrocketed, allowing them to take more cream of the crop students overall. Something you'd think ND would be aware of.

If any of my three children were offered D1 scholarships and could go to ND, or say, Alabama, and Alabama was offering them $250K to show up. I wouldn't get in the way of them deciding themselves, but if truly torn I'd advise them to take that money, easily. That invested when 19 is a no brainer.

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree.

Yeah, engagement is absolutely important, but the value of the degree and the network of affiliates can't be overstated. It absolutely matters.

If I'm determined to become the best at hitting a baseball far, I'd imagine my chances of getting there are better if I use a metal bat over one made out of foam. Sure, they both serve the purpose of hitting the ball, but I'd imagine the metal bat is going to yield far better results at the end of the day. The ND experience simply provides you with better opportunities to maximize your ROI for your engagement in your educational pursuit. Alabama simply can't say the same. They're on completely different levels academically.

I think the problem is that you are forsaking the legitimate avenues of networking ND provides, which are among the best in the nation for upfront money, and you are just trusting a collective that they'll follow through with their promise, when we've already had stories come out about those checks bouncing like with Jaden Rashada. I'd be hesitant to have my kid make a decision based on the money from sleazy SEC collectives that tend to not follow through.

Being huge players in NIL has kinda proven to not be all that successful, when you look at who the big NIL schools are: Oregon, Tennessee, A&M, UCLA, Miami.

Notre Dame is closer to a championship than all of those schools listed above, IMO.

I think you and @Lberry are both correct to a degree. None of what you said for the ND experience is impacted or cheapened if they do a little bit of the pay up front method that arguably every other P5 is doing for high schoolers, I'd argue. ND shouldn't be going after kids that are solely focused on upfront payments (as there are many out there). But they also shouldn't make kids sacrifice 100s of thousands of dollars just to attend ND either.

I can't help but think of someone like Stephon Tuitt who came from a struggling impoverished background. I remember the stories about how he'd walk miles to school and practice each day. He's the epitome of an ND man and has done great work in his NFL career and with his ND degree. Maybe I am wrong but if the current approach took place for his class, I find it highly unlikely he ends up at ND.

I think Oregon might be the exception here, but I otherwise agree. And if Oregon is the exception, they're probably about on par with us. They're recruiting REALLY well and they have some of the best funding and facilities on the West Coast.

This is spot on. The whole argument is a distraction. The reality is that ND could do both. An upfront payment to a kid from a 3rd party NIL fund doesn't need to mean that his educational journey/status with the University is compromised. We would still lose some kids because they don't want to get paid 200K and work hard in the classroom if they can get paid 200K and not work hard in the classroom. I'm OK with losing those kids, but losing the student athletes that would do well at ND because we're being cheap is just irksome.

And we’re further from a championship than Alabama, Georgia, Clemson who all do use NIL.

When will we see the next national champ that doesn’t use NIL? I’m guessing never.

Uh....OSU as well. BTW, I was told Dabo doesn't allow upfront NIL money.

On the importance of NIL, this quote from Maryland's HC Mike Locksley (where they've opened some costly new facilities):

The Terps just last year moved into a sparkling new $149 million football facility, Jones-Hill House, but perhaps that money may have been better spent on NIL deals for the players.

“Unfortunately, we moved in at a time when facilities have been de-emphasized in a recruit’s mind,” Locksley said. “Because they’d get dressed in the trash can for $25,000.”

She could be the next Allison Stokke. Parlayed her viral fame and ended up married to Rickie Fowler.

Apparently after she went viral, she really struggled with anxiety, depression, performance as a result of her "fame".

Rivals main board may have been the peak of the internet. Will never forget when they got the Osama Bin Laden news about 4 hours before the rest of the world.

I remember when they had to briefly shut it down cause someone hacked and posted all of the personal info of some poster he was arguing with. Doesn’t sound that crazy now but this was like 2006

What a shock. I wouldn’t want to be the object of desire of millions of mouth breathing creeps who follow the whims of 16 and 17 year old boys

I watched two middle-aged men slobber over each other yesterday talking about a mildly attractive, surgically-enhanced, middle-aged women. Threw up in my mouth a little. #sturgisrally

I can only imagine the messages this women received.

She says that, but I have a hard time believing someone who became an athletic model for Nike, GoPro, Athleta, and Uniglo, and then later married Rickie Fowler, doesn't enjoy attention and fame. Obviously there will be creepy followers, and that side of things no celebrity likes, but she clearly embraced the viral wave her photos put her on and capitalized on that attention.

So on TOS, people were mentioning that the FUND used to have a donate feature on their website, but that has since gone missing.

I reached out to the FUND and asked them how would somebody be able to donate on their site. This was their response:

Thank you for your interest and support of FUND. At this time, we are not accepting donations online and as a result have removed the 'Donations' link from our website. Please check back periodically so you can stay current on the work we are doing with Notre Dame Student-Athletes.

Go Irish!
Okay.....but why?

The whole purpose of the FUND is to provide student athletes with the opportunity partner with charitable organizations and create a network so they can benefit from their image, all while providing them with a stipend. Removing the option to donate online severely limits that prospect, thus reduces the potential for a player to maximize their image.
