You're worried about pipes? Pipes shouldn't be freezing unless you let your house get below 50.

A lot of the older homes in South Carolina are on crawl spaces that the pipes are in. Those pipes are also not insulated in many cases. Pipes are bursting like crazy down here this week as there have been several nights in a row of below freezing. It normally doesn't get that cold for that many consecutive days.

Yes. Pipes in the crawl spaces that are uninsulated are normal. Bad problems with those busting when its cold like this. My Air handler is struggling right now.

Wow - when is the last time that Charleston had powder snow? Ever?

The snow is just now moving into Manning and Sumter and making it's way towards Columbia. Supposed to start here at 3:00. The picture I was sent of Manning shows it as just snow so that is good. I am sending everyone home at 2:00 just to be safe.

Hope all your pipes survive!

Year of Hugo (1989), 1960, 1899. Lol.

Seriously we had some in 2010 but i have lived here over 20 years and its like less than 3 times its snowed like this. Our average low at New Year is 45 so this is well below the normal. Big anomaly.

My pipes are luckily benath a slab so hopefully they stay ok being below the slab and then frost line.

Here's a a handy hint from one who lived in MN for 36 years – if your pipes are exposed to the cold, open your faucets a bit to keep the water flowing. Running water is less likely to freeze and burst the pipes. The nominal increase in your water bill is a helluva lot cheaper than the cost of having your pipes replaced.

On a side note, my apartment here in Jacksonville was 43 degrees when I got back from my trip to Minneapolis and a miserable Citrus Bowl game (in terms of the weather – the outcome of the game warmed the cockles of my heart a bit.

The space heater, which is my only option for warmth, has the temp all the way up to 58 degrees.

Yippee!

Washed two cars today. Shirts and Sandles in Palos Verdes. I would like a day In The 50’s. Would be nice to use the fireplace for a change.

Cack, your neighborhood looks like Disney's Port Orleans Riverside resort IRL.

It gets colder in the South than most people realize. I remember getting 23" of snow when I was a little kid in the 60's (still the most ever recorded where I grew up in N. AL). In January of '80 or '81 it stayed a few degrees below zero for almost a week. As you mention, lots of houses have crawl spaces and such low temps are unusual, so many people just aren't prepared for it and frozen pipes can be a problem.

Great advice.

Really disappointed in the lack of snow here yesterday. I am still loving the cold temps, but we had about twenty minutes of flurries and no sticking. Super jealous of the Charleston area.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you guys are mostly not appreciative of how beautiful winter can be.

I often forget that so many people in our country just don't experience winter like we do here. The thought that 6 inches of snow is like something people have never seen is hard to grasp.

Blake Bortles saw snow (let alone six inches) for the first time about a month ago.

I don't mind the snow, but these negative temperatures suck. Average high in Indy this time of year is 36.

And what is up with these idiots that go out in negative weather wearing shorts and/or sandals? No, you're not macho, you're stupid and I hope you don't have car trouble.

I wear shorts all the time in the winter. I'm always warm, wearing pants is too hot for me. Now obviously this is for when running errands, to the store, friend's house, etc. If I'm going out I'll be presentable and wear pants even if my legs are sweating.

Granted, with the negative temps I'm only wearing shorts to basketball practice, but yeah... still shorts.

Yeah that's something that is almost impossible to believe to northerns sometimes. You're 25 years old and haven't seen snow.
25 years old and making literally millions of dollars per year in the case of Bortles. Dude can afford to travel.

We're getting abused with hurricane-strength winds. It's basically a cat. 1 hurricane except frozen.
