Nice insert. How warm you keep the ole homestead?
main.jpg

Fireplace is in the single-story section between the garage and the rest of the house so there's a pretty wide discrepancy between that room and the upstairs. The family room is usually 80+ (I've peaked at 92), the upstairs is usually 65. On a really cold night, the bedrooms would get down to 55 or so but we turn the oil heat on at night for the newborn. We usually fill the fireplace about three times a day (7a, 3p, 11p). If we didn't have a newborn, we'd never need the oil.

I often forget that so many people in our country just don't experience winter like we do here. The thought that 6 inches of snow is like something people have never seen is hard to grasp.
So i did some digging and in our area yesterday was the 3rd largest event on record. The first two with accumulation greater than 5" is from a storm in December 1922 and then in 1989 Year of Hugo

Marshes freeze regularly in NY, MN, Alaska, wherever there is water and freezing temperatures. The Mafia has used them as ritual burial grounds for more than a century. Supposedly a great place to hide stiffs.

Foggy Bottom has been frozen for so long, it's status quo.

Is that what happens when water is in temperatures below 32 F? ;).

Unlike our forefathers, fording a river while suffering dysentery is thankfully not a part of the daily commute.

I never could get that bear meat back to camp. Lost a few children because of it.

Kind of wild that we had standing snow in many places today but was 60 degrees. Very weird

And they aren't in SoCal?
What Floridians do when the weather drops below 65:

I'm married to a Floridian, no one in her family can stand the cold. In SoCal when it snows in the mountains people buy tire chains and drive up there to play in it.

I am assuming that we all know the southern half of the world is actually in summer right now:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The temperatures in <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Australia?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Australia</a> are breaking records (119.2°F). ... when they're not dodging forest fires and mudslides.
