What I thought was really funny in MN was a general commitment to the air temperature as opposed to the wind chill. Most people discuss the WC as though it were the actual temperature, but Minnesotans just discuss the air temp.

This is so true. Negative temps would have no meaning here if wind chill was regularly factored in. Most mornings December - March would be negative!

Agreed and agreed.

If you're wearing the proper clothing The wind has little if any effect. One might need to add a full ski mask to one's ensemble if walking into the wind.

If the wind is strong enough to blow you or your tent over – just stay inside as much as possible.

I'll take the cold with no snow we have now over what's going on in Boston.

Weather Reports in MN are banned from discussing the windchill by the State Tourism Board.

Weird weather so far. I was in Denver about 3 weeks ago and it was 76. How can it be 76 in Denver in January? I went back there last week and it was 68.

I am a cold weather fan but even this is to much for me. Most of the day here with the wind chill was 0 or a negative number.

Truth. It's a bigger sense of pride to know who can handle the colder air temperatures back home. I have a friend back home that wears shorts all year. Even I think that's crazy.

That's a definite yes. I remember back in high school at Lake Superior College I had to use winter goggles because it was so cold and windy (LSC is on the top of a hill with a huge parking lot, no trees to block the wind) that I couldn't keep my eyes open. And that's why I prefer cold weather. If I put on more clothes, I'm fine, even in extreme conditions.

Anybody an expert on snowblowers? I mocked them earlier in this thread and I've come to eat my crow.

I can't get my four boys to come home and shovel the driveway, so I bought a 26" dual stage Troy Built with electric start in early November ready to kick winters ass. I've only had the opportunity to use it once and it wasn't like I was attacking big snow drifts the one time I used it.

...I had to use winter goggles because it was so cold and windy ... I couldn't keep my eyes open.

I became a hazard to myself and auto traffic back in the mid '70s in Orlando riding my bike during a 10 day stretch of near freezing and below freezing temps. My eyes would water making it hard to see.

I broke down and bought a 1976 Honda Civic. Goggles might have been a better, more economical move. Little, itty-bitty swim goggles were all that seemed to be available at the time. Not up to the task.

We seem to have taken a reverse migration tack ...

Record low temperatures are expected in Tally tomorrow. I hope it's cold enough for me to wear my jacket, I haven't worn it in over 7 years.

This is why recruits shouldn't worry about weather when they choose a northern school.

-30 degrees with wind chill in MP by 8am tomorrow. Frostbite will be less than 15 minutes.

Hoping campus gets shut down.

Got home from work and found a nice snow drift in my driveway. Finally got to fire that puppy up again.

I don't know about there, but the rule back home was as long as the buses start, school is still on.

...

I skied in -75 degrees wind chill at Whiteface once upon a time on a President's Day weekend. Ski patrol was at the start of all the lift lines checking for frostbite and requiring a trip to the lodge between every run to warm exposed skin. Skiers that gave the ski patrol any lip got their lift ticket snipped off with the an explanation, "We want to see back next year with all your fingers and toes and a nose. Bring back a receipt for hot chocolate or coffee from the lodge in 20 minutes or longer and you will have you lift ticket re-validated." They only had to snip a few tickets for the word to spread quickly on the mountain. The lodge did a booming business in

Wow! BGIF.

I have always wondered something. As crazy as it sounds similar temperatures feel different in various places. Might it be the general effect of local climate?

I was in Quebec, PQ, Canada several times, once within a couple of years of when NWO had some of it's coldest recorded temperatures (until then), and it was regularly 20 to 25 degrees below zero. People walked around with their winter coats open. I joined them, (with a heavy wool sweater underneath!)

And I have been to Eek, Alaska. Really, there is such a place. In truthfulness I believe it is warmer than Toledo, today. Where the river flows into the bay, winds sweep in from the Bering Sea, people on ice skates would open their jackets to make sails and race like the wind. This involved taking off your outer layer of clothing, and inverting it over your head between your arms to make a sail. I tried it. It wasn't bad.

Now I know we are all tougher when we are kids, or so I suspect, but I don't remember it feeling so bad. I always remember times in Toledo, or the Irish Hills, where the temperature must have been higher, (at least 20 degrees), that seemed colder.

Conversely, I remember one time on a DE in the Bering Sea, where the raw temperature was much higher than that of which we speak, but with the sea spray and other weather conditions, I must say, I felt the most miserably cold in my life. Kind of like the ND Spring Game about five years ago.

Maybe someone with the scientific background could explain this phenomenon to me. (Better not hear from some crackpot pop-psychologist, will not find that humorous, lol.)

I'm pretty sure the pool will be ready for swimming this weekend, it's been in the high 70s, low 80s for about ten days...

Well I'm 23 so there are no buses in college.

BUT pretty much every single school high school in MI was cancelled today.

crazy to me, obviously we handle the cold a lot worse, but if there is any snow on the ground that sticks... school is off.

Pure Michigan

Woke up to -5 yesterday and -7 this morning. Now we're supposed to get hit with sleet and snow this weekend. Share the misery.
