"A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are."

Big loss for us. Amazing life.

God Bless you Ara. Both the greatest coach ever at Notre Dame and Miami University(my alma mater.) You were a great man. I'm glad you can finally see your grandkids again. You'll be greatly missed.

Even though given his age and health I knew the end was near, this is heart breaking for me. My all-time favorite coach of any sport. I remember shedding a tear the day he retired, but he had bigger and better things to work on. Godspeed and RIP Ara.

Very Sad. Watching his teams as I was growing up is the foundation of my fandom. Great man, RIP.

I was preparing for this... sucks... I'm kind of upset though, driving into work you'd think ANY sports talk channel would at least do a little something on this.... nope, not when important stuff like LaVar Ball coaching an AAU team also happened. I hate the the world sometimes.

Congratulations on a life well lived Coach. Started my love affair with Irish football because of his teams. Saw my first game in 1973.

A decade later I would attend Miami, like him. Sad day for the Miami community too. He was the last of the Cradle Icons.

Interestingly, he came to be a football coach after dropping out of Akron and joining the Navy in WWII. While at Great Lakes, he was coached by another Miami alum, Paul Brown. After the war he went to Miami and played for Sid Gilman. After college he went to play for Paul Brown's namesake for a few seasons then back to Miami as an assistant for Woody Hayes where he coached Bo Schembechler. He was named HC the following year and in 5 seasons had a 39-6-1 record and 19-3-1 in the MAC. His Miami teams outscored their opponents 847-181. After his undefeated '55 team, he accepted the job at Northwestern. 8 seasons later he'd land the Notre Dame job.

God speed & RIP Coach. Go Irish - Love & Honor.

Some of my earliest memories of CFB involved watching Notre Dame and Ara. One of the greatest to ever walk the sideline.

While the Notre Dame community mourn the passing of a great man, a Notre Dame man one thought will lift my spirits. The Mt. Rushmore of Notre Dame is now complete as Ara has joined Rock, Leahy and Father Ted beside Our Blessed Mother.

Turn on the lights atop Grace Hall to celebrate the life of a man who embodied the spirit of Notre Dame in all aspects of his life.
