Congratulations on a life well lived Coach. Started my love affair with Irish football because of his teams. Saw my first game in 1973.
A decade later I would attend Miami, like him. Sad day for the Miami community too. He was the last of the Cradle Icons.
Interestingly, he came to be a football coach after dropping out of Akron and joining the Navy in WWII. While at Great Lakes, he was coached by another Miami alum, Paul Brown. After the war he went to Miami and played for Sid Gilman. After college he went to play for Paul Brown's namesake for a few seasons then back to Miami as an assistant for Woody Hayes where he coached Bo Schembechler. He was named HC the following year and in 5 seasons had a 39-6-1 record and 19-3-1 in the MAC. His Miami teams outscored their opponents 847-181. After his undefeated '55 team, he accepted the job at Northwestern. 8 seasons later he'd land the Notre Dame job.
God speed & RIP Coach. Go Irish - Love & Honor.
