He "educates" them, and they are then subject to random drug testing thereafter.

That's why he hasn't suspended the young guys.

IIRC, a dog sniffing your car for drugs is not considered a search under the 4th amendment. That is, they don't need probable cause to use the dog.

If he had the dog in his car I'm sure it regularly participates in traffic stops.

I believe you're right. Generally I think they use the dog to get probable cause to search the car.

So the cop that originally pulled them over called for backup because he found a gun? I guess that would make sense but they found it while searching the car, so why would the other cops be necessary during the moments before the gun was found?

It was probably one cop that pulled him over. He noticed that there was 5 people in the car so he probably asked for another unit for back up which in the times we are in is not uncommon. Once he found/saw the gun he probably asked for another unit of 2 because at that point their is a huge safety concern along with everyone being detained at that point. Then after that i don't know their policy and i am pretty sure that you don't but can they transport more then one in a car?

They bring so many people to the traffic stop because they pulled over a car of 5 males and they don't want things to get out of hand. They seemed to be very professional.

And they are paranoid because even nice Notre Dame kids like these 5 are rolling with a gun. I'd be cautious too.

Number of cops : (1) patrol stop; (1) K-9; (1) State Trooper; (2-4) for transport. There could have been five to seven officers there for a traffic stop that turned into more with five occupants in the car.

They need to do 4th Amendment training with incoming players I think. Even with weed and a gun in the car, no reason to turn a routine stop into this unless they had something out in the open, the cop had a K-9 with him, or they talked.
