Guys, we should've just fired him after the 2010 Navy game so we wouldn't have to worry about him leaving us for BC

If you're talking national championship games, then one. Bo Pelini with LSU. Do you know any that have left during the preparation for a NC game??

Fair enough, I was considering bowl games in general, but one more than I could name. I still think he may have more to gain if he stays for the game, but he also has more to lose. If you're going to take a job elsewhere, you lose nothing you've accomplished by taking off early.

diaco knows that he can pick his own salary at ND right? whatever he wants is fine. Alumni will foot the bill. Heck, I'd personally drive to south bend and give him a back massage and breakfast in bed every sunday morning next year if he wants it.

Dibs on brushing his hair.

If Diaco had an assistant to give him a back massage and breakfast in bed, I feel that after a week Diaco would be getting up at 4am to grab some coffee and then stretch so he wouldn't need the massage.

Also, no man touches Diaco's hair.

This needs more love. I remember many, many ND fans screaming for his head after that game and his post game comments. Now "we" are going overboard about the possibility of his leaving.

The only thing I hope is that this whole situation is dealt with quickly and decisively. Either he is staying our he is doing what he believes is best for him and he's leaving. But I hope the situation doesn't drag on and impact the team's preparation for the most important game for ND in over 20 years. Personally I think he stays, for now. But as my wife is fond of telling me "what do you know".

I would say if he goes we should go after Gene Chizik, but I would shine helmets that Texas goes after him because of the abysmal job Manny Diaz has done.

Sorry to any Colorado fans, but the HC job and Colorado is a step down from a Assistant at ND right now. Diaco shouldn't want any part of that, he's got a better chance at BC or Cal.

These were my thoughts exactly. I won't be shocked if Diaz is out after this season.

My thoughts :

Diaco is telling BC from the start, he plans on staying with ND thru the NCG (granted he accepts the job).

I think we should appreciate that he's interviewing right off the back. Perhaps he doesn't have any plans on leaving. He just wants to interview for the experience and leverage as most of you all have said. It's a good thing to that he's getting these interviews (Cal and BC) out of the way before they even start practice back up. This way it doesn't become a distraction.

If he were to accept another job, I am not sure I want him to stay for the NCG.

Sure he is a great DC; sure he really loves these guys; and I know his intentions would be to give 100% to this team during preperation, but I am also confident that his mind and efforts would wander. Be honost - wouldn't yours?

This is primetime recruiting season, this is when the coaches really close the deals on kids coming to their program. Plus he would have to begin building a staff and there will be other new coaches across the country attempting to build new staffs as well.

As much as I like him as our DC and believe he is a difference maker. I don't want him to stick around if he accepts another position. The distraction would be too much.

Remember the motto for this season: "Next Man In"

As much as any coach on the staff, Diaco deserves to finish out this season with Notre Dame no matter what he decides about accepting a head coaching position elsewhere. Kelly and his coaching staff put this team together, developing Charlie's recruits and bringing in their own. Bob Diaco has been a key part of that process.

The backbone of our team, the defense, are a testament to Diaco's coaching. To deprive him of the opportunity to pursue a head coaching position or to prohibit him from finishing out the season if he accepts a position elsewhere would be an inappropriate response.

If he wants to stay through the national championship game before accepting his next coaching challenge, then we should be excited about his commitment to this year's team.

if anything can be done on the ND side of this (money extension etc) than with jack and kelly im 1000% confident it will be done.
if the guy in his own mind has to be a head coach at this time then there is nothing our ND folks could do to keep him.
my personal opinion is that he takes the BC gig

I can't see ND depriving him of that if he wanted to stay and coach the game. But, I just don't see him wanting to do that if he accepts the HC position at BC. It immediately becomes his first priority to retain whatever recruits he currently has, work on getting more and secure a staff. Diaco is a professional and will depart for BC before the game if those are the terms of his agreement.

There are also the rumors out there that he's looking for a multi-year deal from ND and using this as levereage.. ND doesn't normally give multi-year deals to assistants but I think now would be a good time to set a new trend.

Pay your assistants, or someone else will. I hope he stays, but if he goes I hope he is ready. Some people are not cut out to be head coaches and once he is gone there is no coming back.

If that's the only impediment I hope Swarbrick makes quick work of it. Don't see why we can't just give him a contract for the same term as BK. It's not like BK is going to want to fire him. Yeah, if by some chance Swarbrick or BK do want to fire him we'll have to buy him out, but what are the chances of that happening, the way our defense has played. It's totally worth it to keep what we have going.

And from Diaco's perspective, I get that he may just personally want to be a head coach at this point, but he's still a young guy and he can learn a lot by being a part of a perennial contender, which it looks like we have a chance to be under BK, before he moves on. Stick around bro. Play in 2 or 3 NCGs, not just one.

He's 39.

If he wants to go be a head coach he has my blessing and ALL of my well wishes. But if I find out that he was looking for a multi-year deal and we didn't give it to him Imma be pissed.

I totally agree. Don't see any reason why we can't give him a multi-year deal when he deserves as much credit as anyone for this team's turnaround. They may have to be a little creative with the contract but I'm sure Savvy Jack, who was a big-time sports lawyer for decades before coming to ND, can work that out.

I'm hoping Brian Kelly is using some friendly persuasion on Diaco. I hope Kelly advises Diaco not to be rash, that jumping into the HC arena can be a long, hard slog. Also, the HC can and will take heat for things that aren't his fault (sub-standard facilities, uncommitted fan base, etc).

Other posters have listed the reasons why Boston College isn't much of a prize job. I'm guessing he has 3-4 years, tops, to turn BC around and if he can't, despite his best efforts, there goes his HC stock. So he'll have to knock around at even lower-tier FBS schools, or even taking an NFL assistant job, trying to build his coaching rep back up. Is it worth the risk just so Diaco can have the title of "Head Coach?" Is he even ready to take on the responsibility? If I was Kelly, that's what I'd tell Diaco. And I'd say that if you stick around, I'll groom you for the big job, but now is a bad time to leave.

Diaco's not dumb. He's seen how much responsibility and scrutiny BK goes through being the HC of ND. If he thinks he's ready, then I think he's ready. I'm glad we'll know soon.

Multi-year deal with an opt out for the Iowa job is what he allegedly wants.. Obviously not verified by anyone of importance, so take it with a grain fo salt.

But, if it is true, I'd certainly make the excption, being that he is already assistant HC and give him what he wants.

Pay the man. Losing Diaco now would hurt much more than losing him 2 years from now. This ND avalanche is just starting. 2 more years of it would allow for a much more seamless transition IMO.
