Take out the brand names.
We have a 10-2 team. Vs. a 7-5 team
Do you give the 10-2 team ANY credit for winning that game? And why is that kind of game even allowed to happen? Has that wide a win difference in a bowl happened any time recently?
Yes, it has, but it's a bit more rare that it happens with two P5 teams. More frequently, it's games featured against the second or third best G5 team against a low level P5 team. Example, Temple in 2016 was a 10 win team going into the bowl game against a 6-6 Wake Forest team. That same year, Boise was 10-2 and played 6-6 Baylor. Even last year, UFC was 12-0 and played against LSU who was 9-3. Cinci was 10-2 and played 6-6 VT recently.
For P5 vs P5, it's a bit more rare, but you have a 4 win differential in the Alamo bowl this year between Utah and Texas. 2 win differential happens rather frequently, 3 win is pretty rare.
For documentation sake, in the CFP era, the highest ranked team in the now named Camping World bowl has been 18/10/14/17/15/14. So ND being in this game is basically about right, at least from a ranking perspective. Both teams have been ranked 3 out of the 6 games during that same time period. Again, about right for this game, though OSU would have made this 3 years in a row of ranked vs ranked teams.
