Take out the brand names.

We have a 10-2 team. Vs. a 7-5 team

Do you give the 10-2 team ANY credit for winning that game? And why is that kind of game even allowed to happen? Has that wide a win difference in a bowl happened any time recently?

Yes, it has, but it's a bit more rare that it happens with two P5 teams. More frequently, it's games featured against the second or third best G5 team against a low level P5 team. Example, Temple in 2016 was a 10 win team going into the bowl game against a 6-6 Wake Forest team. That same year, Boise was 10-2 and played 6-6 Baylor. Even last year, UFC was 12-0 and played against LSU who was 9-3. Cinci was 10-2 and played 6-6 VT recently.

For P5 vs P5, it's a bit more rare, but you have a 4 win differential in the Alamo bowl this year between Utah and Texas. 2 win differential happens rather frequently, 3 win is pretty rare.

For documentation sake, in the CFP era, the highest ranked team in the now named Camping World bowl has been 18/10/14/17/15/14. So ND being in this game is basically about right, at least from a ranking perspective. Both teams have been ranked 3 out of the 6 games during that same time period. Again, about right for this game, though OSU would have made this 3 years in a row of ranked vs ranked teams.

I’m with Koon and Irish #1. Give me Iowa St all day, they were the team I preferred slightly over Okie St. I wanted nothing to do with Texas and Kansas St. Iowa State will be the third best defense we’ve faced all season. Let’s see this new passing attack light it up. Let’s see us make a statement by beating this team by 2+ touchdowns when OU and Baylor couldn’t. We have the talent to do it, so coaches let’s go! Go Irish!

It will mostly be ISU fans I bet. Most ND fans it seems are totally indifferent to this match-up.

Where are people seeing this? Most of my friends already booked their trip top Orlando and are looking forward to the game. I would be going as well if I didn't have a commitment that weekend. Notre Dame has one of the best traveled fan bases and I cannot believe they won't do the same for this game.

How good is Iowa State’s defense?
I keep seeing people talk about their passing game and decent running game, but I tend to trust Clark Lea and our defense a lot more than I trust our ability to move the ball against a quality D. Are they that? Or typical Big 12 garbage?

They aren’t loaded w/ talent but their DC has maximized what he has w/ scheme. Their DC was also being considered by BK when he tapped Elko to replace BVG. For a team that likes to rush 3 & drop 8, they’re pretty stout vs the run. Iowa State only allows 133.8 rushing yards per game. Of the nine B12 opponents they faced, they held nine under their season average. This included Okie State who featured one of the best RB in the nation. Hard to compare apples-to-apples based on opponents, but they seem to be best on defense at what ND is worst at on offense. This could be a huge referendum on Jeff Quinn & the OL.

Yeah. The ability to drop eight but still be stout against the run doesn't sound like a great matchup for us. Hope those RBs get healthy during the time off.

Iowa State is 4 points from being 10-2. They had the Big 12 champ and #4 Playoff competitor in Oklahoma on the ropes with a 2 point conversion, and also nearly beat the Big 12 runner up in Baylor. Recruiting is important, but coaching is more important. Right now Iowa State is a well coached team, and this will be their Super Bowl. This is easily their biggest bowl matchup in the last 20+ years.

[EDIT] I went back and double checked. The last big time program Iowa State faced in a bowl game was a 5 loss pre-Saban Alabama team in 2001. Before that? 1978 against Texas A&M. They're gonna come out fired up.
No, they're 4 points from 7-2-3. And we can play that game too. , We're a TD away from 11-1.

I'm really looking forward to this game. Iowa State is better than their record and will be a tough test. Should be a good game.

I could not possibly care less about the "we'll get no credit for beating them" stuff. No one cares in the slightest about any bowl outside the NY6 and CFP, and then, really, it's only certain NY6 match-ups. No one outside of the PSU and Memphis fandoms gives af about the Cotton Bowl this year. No one gives af about the Orange Bowl outside of UF and UVA.

ND beat LSU in the Citrus Bowl only 2 years ago and the knock *still* is that ND can't beat good teams. It's *all* bullshit.

ND won't get credit, anyway, so just enjoy the show.

FFS, the ACC deal has nothing to do with the shitty bowl. Getting bent over by Michigan and arguably jobbed by the committee does.

Agree it kind of sucks to get bumped out of the Orange Bowl by Virginia, but I can't imagine what bowl we'd be in if we didn't have access to the ACC slots. The Pinstripe? Maybe the Detroit Bowl?

Exactly. If it wasn’t for the ACC deal, ND doesn’t get the Citrus Bowl vs LSU two years ago. If ND were a member of the ACC, they likely don’t make the CFP after a loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. It’s just a weird year where there was a ton of 10-2/11-2 teams. Hell, even Bama didn’t get an NY6 at 10-2.

local radio said ND hasnt had back to back 11 win seasons since 88/89.

Seems like that would be something for these guys to play for.

This isn't meant to be a shot at you, but I always hate the "they're x points away from being x-x." argument.

Yeah, they were 4 points from being 10-2. They were also 5 points away from being 5-7, including a loss against FCS Northern Iowa.

The Kansas game was also closer than the score showed, as it was back and forth for most of the game and ISU scored a TD with a minute left to increase their lead to 10.

Also turns out that the Big XII kind of sucks. Oklahoma is the best team in the conference and they are going to get absolutely curbstomped by LSU. I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if LSU won by 35 or more and hung 50+ on them.

Iowa State beat exactly ONE team with a winning record (FBS teams at least), that being Texas. So they played 5 teams with winning records and went 1-4.

Don't get me wrong I want 11-2 and hope the guys want to show out but these games don't mean that much anymore-this will mean more to Iowa State and that scares me. The bowls really are exhibitions unless you're in the playoff. Maybe a New Year 6 against a big opponent would spice things up for the Irish but Saban was right -these bowls- all of them don't mean that much except for 4 teams. The old days were better when you could have a #5 team jump to no#1 if things feel right-plus the bowl ties in are ridiculous. I would think the Orange/Fiesta/Sugar/ Cotton would like to choose who they really wanted instead of these ridiculous matchups.

And when Notre Dame could make the Fiesta Bowl with six wins.

I'd like to think I'm a realist. I'm the one smacking people in the head each season when they say "We're gonna destroy Pitt this year." Then every season we play Pitt it tends to come down to the wire, like there's not some incredible precedent here.

That said I sincerely hope we don't come out flat because I believe Iowa State is going to give us their best shot for 2 1/2 quarters until our depth comes into play. If we're snoozing, they could take advantage and make things very difficult.

Just saw we are only 4pt favorites against a 7-5 team.... ughhh.

I also heard on the IE podcast they are having pregame tailgate specials on tacos and baked potatoes.

Living in Michigan I would have loved to see a rematch vs the Wolverines. I absolutely can't stand them and think we would beat them 8 out of 10 times.

Iowa State will be a good matchup though.

Notre Dame 34
Iowa State 32
