Looking more and more like the Cubs will put a viable team on the field soon. 2016-2017, it'll happen for them.

Not sure how to post pics, but I saw a pic of Jeff with the caption "That awkward moment when you realize samardzija is the best WR in Oakland"

Jeff was dealing today in his first start since being traded. 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 K's against a strong Toronto lineup. #SHARKATTACK

Isn't Shark's best chance at #1 money kicking butt in the late season and playoffs? He wasn't going to get a chance to show brass balls in Chicago.

At the end of the day, he is a competitor and wants to showcase his talent on the biggest possible stage to facilitate the biggest dollars possible. The idea of falling apart at the end of the season probably doesn't even cross his mind.

Source confirms Jeff Samardzija agrees to a five-year, $90 million deal with #Giants.

Good thing he has that ND degree to fall back on.

Man...that's such an overpayment for him. As a Cubs fan, I would have been happy to take him back for 10-12 million, but 18? Way too much.

so yeah... baseball was a solid career choice I guess. Still too bad, would have loved to see what he could do in the NFL.

Hard to believe there is anyone that still says he'd have been better off in the NFL. $123 Million and counting as of now. Greg Jennings and Brandon Marshall are the most successful of the WR in his draft class and They are betwen $40-$50M on their current deals and won't have much left in the tank after that.

$18M for a serviceable #2 inning eater or a good #3, 4.00 ERA guy... Baseball is ALWAYS the route to go if you have equal skills.

Absolutely. I think he would have been a better football player, but he absolutely made the right decision. No question. Happy for him.

When he decided to play baseball instead of football I thought he was crazy. IIRC he was projected number 14 overall to the Bears. When a dude is projected in the top 15 of the NFL draft and decides to pursue other options it's kind of shocking. I was looking forward to seeing what the Shark could do in the NFL. That said he's been a lot more fun to watch in pro baseball than I ever thought he would be. He had a rough year last year but I look forward to seeing him dominate in the NL again this year.

I guess Jeff made the smart choice
Jeff Samardzija's baseball decision has proven to be a smart one - Business Insider

Former NFL wide receiver Antwaan Randle El raised some eyebrows this week when he said he's losing his memory, can't walk down stairs, and regrets choosing football over a potential baseball career. In 2006, former Notre Dame wide receiver Jeff Samardzija faced a similar dilemma, choosing baseball over football, and it has proven to be the right decision.

After being drafted in 2006, the Chicago Cubs gave Samardzija a $7.25 million signing bonus that was contingent on him committing to baseball within five years. When Samardzija did commit to baseball after his final season of football at Notre Dame and passed on the 2007 NFL Draft, the Cubs gave their young pitcher a new $10 million contract even though he was yet to appear in the majors.

This winter, Samardzija was a free agent for the first time and signed a 5-year, $90 million, fully guaranteed contract with the San Francisco Giants. This will push his career earnings to a minimum of $127.7 million even though he has appeared in just one All-Star Game and has never been considered a dominant pitcher.

Projected to be drafted in the middle of the 2007 NFL Draft's first round, here is how Samardzija's career earnings compare to the three wide receivers who were drafted in the middle of the first round that year. Dwayne Bowe has been a Pro Bowler and at times has been one of the better wide receivers in football. Ted Ginn Jr. is a journeyman receiver who has played well at times. Robert Meachem last appeared in the NFL in 2014. Samardzija has more guaranteed career earnings than the these three combined ($102.8M).

I had looked this up before.

They should have added the next two WR's taken, Craig Davis and Anthony Gonzalez. They made a combined $16M in their short careers, still less than Shark will make.

What this graph fails to mention is Megatron went #2 in 20007. He's at $109 in earnings and is due $24M next year if he's on the Lions roster. He's still owed $11M if he never plays again.

Couple of things lastly,

I never knew Anthony Gonzales was a St. Ignatius OH guy and an Academic All American at OSU. Wonder if ND was in on him back in the day? Would have been a nice fit. He left the NFL in 2012 and got into Stanford for grad school. Good for him. Proof that you can get a great education at most schools if that's the route you go and apply yourself.

I hadn't heard the bad news about Antwaan Randle El. That's horrible. He was so exciting to watch. IIRC, his combination of passing and rushing totals were the best of all time... at that time at least. Wish the best for him.

After working with Bochy & Rigs for a while Samardzija will be in the Series. It is an even numbered year.

That Megatron of the future doesn't sound like he's making much money if you think about inflation over a millenia...

Saw this tweet.

Andrew Luck's new contract worth "the most guaranteed money in NFL history" is less than Jeff Samardzija got this offseason. Play baseball.

Isn't Jeff S. getting 18m/year compared to Luck's 23.5/year and signed a longer deal?

It blows my fucking mind that an article can be written about $87 million dollars guaranteed being a letdown to the other QBs. Spare me the market lectures, these guys are paid very well for playing a game that serves as a great distraction and nothing more.

Yes, markets, trickle down, commerce, etc.

And I very much enjoy football but I still recognize it's lack of inherent value.
