A week ago Trump absolutely blew a chance to provide that guidance. A reporter asked him a "softball" question. What do you say to people who are scared? Trump blew an easy opportunity to communicate and connect with the American people. Did he say anything that would reassure the public?. No, he said "You are a terrible reporter". How in the hell are we supposed to react given that answer?

Really? Did you even watch the lead in? The question was something to the effect of "do you think your OPTIMISIM IS DANGEROUS to the US public". It was a completely out of line question that was only trying to bring fear. I was so proud of Trumps response because ive been watching the pressers every day and I cant stand the questions that are being asked. Some are fair and some are even good questions that help the task Force but this fear mongering by the media needs to stop.

Rogan talked about the role of the president in one of his recent podcasts. He said that the president's main job during a time of crisis is to provide some sort of measured guidance. There has been none of that, from our dear leader. He called this a hoax; quite possibly the worst thing one can do when trying to control public fear and to gain buy-in for isolation measures. That ship has sailed, and it is what it is.

I hope that you and your fam stay safe, too, my friend. I have a nice supply of whiskey to see me through this storm. Remember, 120+ proof should be enough to kill the virus!

Inspiring.

In one day, 1,000 NYC doctors and nurses enlist to battle coronavirus. States have Medical Relief Corps for disasters. 9000 health care professionals already on NY's already responded despite their age, conditions and commitments. Many others states and cities are utilizing their Medical Relief Corps and other volunteer avenues.

Many of the world's leaders have gotten in protective suits to visit hospitals in their countries -Russia, China, Japan, S. Korea, France, U.K., others.

Regarding the hoax stuff. At minimum, very debatable.
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-coronavirus-rally-remark/

If you can be critical of that, and not critical of much of the political stuff from the other side, then your mind is already pre-set. Especially the early attacks about being xenophobic an overreacting because he shut down China travel so early. The projections had he not done so that early, are simply frightening.

I've posted a few articles on the topic relevant to why we were slow on the testing front. In short, the original tests were found inaccurate, and CDC wanted totally new/different tests. Not surprising to see this getting more pub now.

I just watched his presser today (and many of the past dailies). The reporters are clearly in attack mode, and some don't even try to mask it. Even today it happened on simple topics that have been played out 10x already this week. The constant gotcha questions with clear motive are just tiresome. Quite simply, we have a bunch of terrible reporters simply wanting to be Orange Man Bad in all things. It's why the media's approval rating right now is lower than Trumps. If you honestly think the media isn't in attack mode, not sure what to tell ya.

I truly hope there is a reckoning.

At minimum, they are going to lose a ton of business on goods considered essential. I hope we totally pull business for all essential drugs and medical supplies at minimum. That would be a huge loss, and I hope we do much, much more. It's time for the Western countries to come together on this. At minimum US, Canada, EU, Japan, etc..

Yup. There's just so much that could happen. No easy answer either way.
Even the simple and non-serious impacts like stir-craziness is impacting folks big time. Wouldn't be surprised if Netflix doesn't become free for a time pretty soon like some of the other premium services in an attempt to help.

I'm most concerned with folks getting desperate. The longer this goes on, the more impacts creep in.

Donald murdered the journalists today.

My favorite was when he got a CNN guy to embarrass himself on national television by forcing him to read the full quote.

The journalists had yet another bad day at the office.

A great day? He compared the ratings of his pressers to
TV shows. He's also braced the country that between 100,000-200,000 deaths, would be considered a great success. Trump has downplayed this the whole way. Keep in mind, that he's called this a hoax, and stated that it would just magically disappear, This is stuff he has said in last month. Keep drinking that Fox colored Kool- aid.

Well considering every media outlet (Fox included) has used the faulty Imperial College model that said 2MM would die here, I think 100K would be a success

On magically disappearing....
Several doctors, especially early on, said this could die out or decrease dramatically with warmer weather. Even Fauci spoke about southern Africa being at risk due to falling temps / approaching winter.

I get it, you don't like him, but you're cheering along with MSM..

TBF, Trump brings it upon himself. His brashness has served him well in life, but there is a time and a place. For example....

"It's a New York hospital. It's packed all the time," Trump said "Something's going on . . . where are the masks going? Are they going out the back door?

How in the world is that statement useful to the ongoing crisis? It's simply not an emotionally intelligent response. He could have gotten his message across in a quote like..

"We have seen an unprecedented surge is demand, both publicly and privately. We will do everything we can to ensure the safety of those battling this virus everyday. We encourage hospitals and doctor offices to protect their employees while also ensuring there is zero waste."

Sorry to hear about all that you are dealing with.

Have you heard or seen anything that might correlate vaping with increased risk?

A couple of days ago in this thread the PEDs Dr in Seattle ( I forget his handle here) noted how stunned they were with young people (early 20's) Covid patients having severe respiratory issues and not doing well on treatment.

If someone else can post his handle you can check his other posts.

PerthDomer, "InKellyWeTrust", and "SonofOahu" are three posters in this thread NOT to miss.

I don’t think it’s outrageous to say Don was slow on the trigger on this one but is doing a fine job now. Never understood why his supporters can’t admit when he makes a misstep and others can’t admit when he does something positive.

On a less political note. What do places like Italy do? At what point do they try to get back to normal and will the virus just fire back up at that point?

I'm in Seattle. No peds cases yet. Adults have some intubated mid 20 yos. Anecdotally I'd count vaping as a comorbidity. Other hypotheses is this binds to the ang II receptor and that's upregulated in people on ACE inhibitors/Arbs aka 1st line diabetes heart disease and htn meds. Pattern seen is young take another week to get really sick and after ARDS recovery a significant proportion has heart failure/sudden cardiac death. I'm really worried for onc, congenital heart disease, transplant, CF, and sickle cell populations in peds.

Why would China be covering up the numbers infected, what are they hiding? I say it all goes back to Wuhan and the fact someone goofed and let the disease loose on the world.

Goes back to the basic tenets of communism which is to control everything. Admitting anything here is a black mark.

So made a Walmart run for base supplies yesterday and that surreal moment finally hit me,... store radio playing ‘how to fight the virus’ service announcements rather than music and a lot of people wearing gloves and masks. It felt like a real life Fallout game or something. Guess I’ve been too sick and laid up for it all to sink in to that degree until now,...

The wife and I hit Kroger early yesterday morning. They were still lacking in paper products and pasta, but the meat coolers were pretty full. They might be catching up to the rush of the previous couple of weeks.

I understand why you would say it’s out of line to ask that question, and (IMO) it doesn’t seem like Trump hears critiques of himself and goes home to do some sole searching or reconsidering his stances, so I guess any question posed to him is not worth the breath. However, I do think some of his “optimistic” comments throughout this process have been dangerous. When a vast majority of those in his administration with high-level knowledge of the subject are saying one thing, and then the President comes in and provides conflicting information based on his hunches or gut feelings, it truly can be harmful. In his 3+ years in office, never has there been a more important time to get everyone on the same page and provide some consistency in what they are telling the country. To me that’s just leadership 101. I say this while also being of the mindset that Trump has been more “Presidential” in the past 3 weeks than he has at any point in his term.

There are just some people who have committed their lives and careers to helping others in selfless acts of kindness to those most in need. Some volunteer using their skills and help teach others. Many Americans, though in other walks of life, help our society to advance and improve it. From billionaires to professionals to hard-working Americans to public servants, we recognize their contributions and the fact they have a soul, care about others, and work together in a cooperation that is absolutely imperative. That makes America great, especially now when so many of us are affected.

The repercussions of this pandemic are and will be great.

The Fed Economists at the Fed’s St. Louis district project total employment reductions of 47 million, which would translate to a 32.1% unemployment rate, according to a recent analysis. The White House coronavirus response coordinator, Dr Deborah Birx, said today that she is “very worried about every city in the United States” and projects 100,000 to 200,000 American deaths as a best case scenario.

The cost for saving the global economy is estimated at $7 Trillion, including the recent $2 Trillion by the U.S. - if more is not required.

TBF, Trump brings it upon himself. His brashness has served him well in life, but there is a time and a place.

You could say the press, and certain members of the opposite party brings it on themselves too. Trump can be a jackass, but he's been under attack literally his entire presidency. Actually before then. If he were simply being a jackass for the sake of being a jackass, I'd feel differently, but 99% he's simply fighting back.

He was quick on the draw with shutting down travel to/from China and absolutely got destroyed for it. We were quicker than a lot of countries (even Italy) in that area. Doctors and projections say that alone gave us an extra 6 weeks, and likely saved a ton of lives and kept hospitals from overloading. Given we have far more travel from China than any Western country, it could have been much much worse. In short, he's going to get blasted for whatever he does.

To your last question, I think everyone is simply trying to flatten the curve and buy time waiting on an effective treatment and vaccine. Once you have those, it's a very different ball game.

I'm cheering for him to wake up. Which Doctors were those? We saw what was going on in every other country. Why would the United States of America be the exception to the rule.

Take a look at the virus map and compare the cases relative to the equator and south.
https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

Fauchi was one of the docs talking about temperature impacts (several studies/links below). There are several studies talking about heat, more specifically humidity, which makes the transmission more difficult. The WHO has played down those studies, but have done so because it does not take into account human behavior. But, there absolutely seems to be some type of impact due to heat/humidity if looked at purely. It's very early obviously, so most are hedging bets on how optimistic they want to be.

This is a good site to track cases and deaths via country. You can drill down to find more specifics for each state and/or region.

https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

There's been some regulatory changes by HHS under emergency authority to allow more people who have suddenly found themselves out of work and without health insurance.

Medicaid Emergency Authority Tracker: Approved State Actions to Address COVID-19
(Kaiser Health News)

Section 1135 waivers: If the President has declared an emergency or disaster and the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) has declared a public health emergency, the Secretary can use Section 1135 authority to waive or modify certain Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP requirements to ensure that sufficient health care items and services are available to meet the needs of Medicaid enrollees in affected areas. On March 13, 2020, President Trump issued a proclamation that the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States constitutes a national emergency, beginning March 1, 2020. After this declaration, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued blanket Section 1135 waivers for many Medicare provisions. Additionally, states are able to submit to CMS for approval Section 1135 waivers for Medicaid provisions. These approved state waivers are summarized in the table below.

At this point, thirty-two states have been granted these waivers. The waivers were approved to give states more flexibility to focus resources on combating the coronavirus, COVID-19, and providing responsible care to Medicaid beneficiaries. The goal is to provide relief such as prior authorization and provider enrollment requirements, suspending certain nursing home pre-admission reviews, and facilitating reimbursement to providers for care delivered in alternative settings due to facility evacuations.

and, specifically, State Data and Policy Actions to Address Coronavirus (KHN)

In late 2019, a new strain of coronavirus emerged in China. With the number of cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by this coronavirus, growing rapidly in the United States and around the world, the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Controlling the spread of the virus requires aggressive action from states and the federal government to ensure access to testing for those who need it and treatment for those who contract the disease.

To date, states have taken a number of actions to mitigate the spread of the virus and reduce barriers to testing and treatment for those affected. This data tool provides state-level information on:

Cases and deaths
Cases and deaths (trend data)
Adopted social distancing measures
Health policy actions to reduce barriers to COVID-19 testing and treatment
Additional state-level data related to COVID-19, including testing and provider capacity
These data will be updated regularly, and new information will be added in response to the evolving situation.

China is going to make enemies of the entire world after this is over. Not because this originated there, but because they covered it up for as long as they could, allowed millions (literally) of people to leave Hubei when shit fit the fan, and intentionally and drastically under reported numbers. All this to gain political and economical advantage.

I guess the Admin did not withdraw of cuts in SNAP (Food Stamps) with the declaration of a national and health emergency. The new rules would have been implemented, more than 700,000 American citizens would have been pushed off of food stamps on April 1. A federal judge on March 14th issued an injunction halting that order by the Admin citing the coronavirus pandemic.

U.S. District Court Judge Beryl A. Howell, in her injunction, in her reasoning for keeping the Trump Administration’s “arbitrary and capricious” plan from going into effect. “Especially now, as a global pandemic poses widespread health risks, guaranteeing that government officials at both the federal and state levels have flexibility to address the nutritional needs of residents and ensure their well-being through programs like SNAP, is essential.”

The CARES Act just passed did not boost SNAP benefits. Congress is expected to do that in the next relief package.

And they won't after this, for the same reason they didn't before -- soulless, multinational corporations that care about quarterly profits above all else. There are hundreds of examples, but the NBA's very recent display of moral bankruptcy over the Hong Kong protests is a perfect encapsulation of this.

I think a few things have changed. One, I think the country will take national security and health more seriously, so we'll see a shift in at minimum medical stuff pulled from China. Second, I think public (all Western countries) sentiment got a major reality check on who China really is. They've been an enemy and a threat for a long time, and this situation has made it a lot less easy to downplay.

I see the issue becoming a major campaign talking point once we get past the epidemic for both parties. Now is not the time to throw punches as we still have too much reliance, but I can see Trump especially recommending tax credits, write offs, etc. encouraging companies to bring back production once we're out of harm's way.

They never really had it under control in the first place. Just chose to lie about it.

Friend of mine's mother just got off the phone with a CEO of one of the hospitals in Wuhan. It's still horrific there.

"Air smells like burning bodies."

"State police aren't letting anyone in or out of Wuhan, despite claims of the city being open."

Multiple nurses from my friend's hometown volunteered to help in Wuhan recently. During their time, none of the Covid patients survived.

People dying at home aren't being counted with confidence.

Factories being used to aid in cremation services.

One crematory, alone, is doing about 2500 per day.
