Friend of mine's mother just got off the phone with a CEO of one of the hospitals in Wuhan. It's still horrific there.

"Air smells like burning bodies."

"State police aren't letting anyone in or out of Wuhan, despite claims of the city being open."

Multiple nurses from my friend's hometown volunteered to help in Wuhan recently. During their time, none of the Covid patients survived.

People dying at home aren't being counted with confidence.

Factories being used to aid in cremation services.

One crematory, alone, is doing about 2500 per day.

Radio Free Asia said China is giving out 3500 urns a day.....

The WHO needs to stop carrying water for China. How many journalists and medical workers need to be "disappeared" before the WHO calls it how it is. Wonder if they ever deleted their tweet about no human to human transmission?

And they won't after this, for the same reason they didn't before -- soulless, multinational corporations that care about quarterly profits above all else. There are hundreds of examples, but the NBA's very recent display of moral bankruptcy over the Hong Kong protests is a perfect encapsulation of this.

Yep. Money trumps all. I’ve slowly changed my buying habits through the years and this will push me further into buying local, buying from smaller American companies. Price be damned.

A few states have recently passed Medicaid expansion bills (Obamacare). mostly in the Midwest and mostly after voter referendums in the 2018 elections. States looked at the millions of healthcare dollars that would fund federal insurance for those who qualified

In Kansas, despite a voter referendum and a compromise by the Gov and the Rep leader of the legislature, the legislature adjourned without any action getting tied up with abortion politics. Should it have been brought to a vote 132,000 (4.5%) Kansans could have been covered. (A Medicaid expansion bill was passed by their legislature in 2017 but vetoed by the then Gov. Brownback.)

On the other side, on Jan 1st, 2020, red states like Utah and Idaho expanded Medicaid to cover those adults making 138% or less of the federal poverty level (about $17,000 a year). Up to 120,000 Utahans could be covered. 90,000 of Idaho's working poor could now be covered (5% of their residents). Montana renewed their Medicaid expansion to cover 96,000 low income Montana citizens or continue their coverage.

Nebraska's legislature passed a Medicaid expansion bill to cover about 94,000 of their citizens, but it will not go into effect until Oct 1, 2020.

Missouri has not expanded Medicaid, and the expansion would cover 199,000 uninsured adults at this time. A referendum will be on the ballot in 2020.

The waivers the states have been obtaining to enroll people in Medicaid will help for those who have lost their jobs. The expansions in Utah and Idaho should have allowed those 210,000 citizens with Montana's renewal adding another 96,000 into their health care systems, obtain PCPs and medicines. That and the federal dollars would assist these states and their working poor at this time of the coronavirus pandemic. A byproduct of that would be that included in the state system would make it efficient in providing other services at this time of need.

Sadly you are right. The NBA lost me, possibly forever over that crap

I think a few things have changed. One, I think the country will take national security and health more seriously, so we'll see a shift in at minimum medical stuff pulled from China. Second, I think public (all Western countries) sentiment got a major reality check on who China really is. They've been an enemy and a threat for a long time, and this situation has made it a lot less easy to downplay.

I see the issue becoming a major campaign talking point once we get past the epidemic for both parties. Now is not the time to throw punches as we still have too much reliance, but I can see Trump especially recommending tax credits, write offs, etc. encouraging companies to bring back production once we're out of harm's way.

Kansas and Missouri didn’t expand Medicaid. Could that worsen the COVID-19 pandemic? (KC Star)

Kansas currently restricts Medicaid eligibility to pregnant women, individuals with disabilities, people over 65 and low-income families with children. Parents on Medicaid can only make up to 38% of the federal poverty level — an annual income of less than $10,000 for a family of four.

The requirements are even more restrictive in Missouri. Only the disabled, children and parents with incomes under 22 percent of federal poverty — less than $5,800 a year for a family of four — are eligible.

The Kansas Legislature passed an expansion bill three years ago, but it was vetoed by then-Gov. Sam Brownback, a Republican. Kelly’s bipartisan expansion proposal has stalled in the face of GOP procedural roadblocks.

Excerpts:
Victoria Altic, a 31-year-old single mother of two who works as a restaurant cook in Springfield, makes too much for the program. Her employer doesn’t offer insurance.

Her daughter, who unlike her is covered by Medicaid, has a rare congenital brain and eye disorder that means she’s at higher risk if she comes into contact with anyone who has the virus.

“We are facing a pandemic, and everyone is more aware than ever how important it is for people to have health insurance,” she said.

“Everyone being able to afford to go to the doctor would have helped us contain this virus. Having so many people without access to health insurance left us completely unprepared for this crisis.”

Patrick Sallee, CEO of Vibrant Health, a clinic in Kansas City, Kansas, that primarily serves Medicaid recipients and those in the coverage gap, said policymakers’ decision to not expand has placed all Kansans and Missourians more at risk.

“The first time it was on my radar that this virus was for sure in Kansas City is we got a call from a local health department that said we have a patient who doesn’t want to get tested because they don’t have health insurance and they don’t want to deal with the aftermath,”
“The testing may be free, but then what?” said Denise Cyzman, CEO of the Community Care Network of Kansas, which represents community health centers. Cyzman said the uninsured are more likely to wait to seek treatment until the disease has progressed at which point they’ll face huge out of pocket costs.

Whose going to bear the losses?

It's that type of thinking over the past 2 decades that have put us in the position we are in now. I'm sure we'll be reminded of Joe's views during the general campaign. He's an easy target on a lot of things these days.

I understand why you would say it’s out of line to ask that question, and (IMO) it doesn’t seem like Trump hears critiques of himself and goes home to do some sole searching or reconsidering his stances, so I guess any question posed to him is not worth the breath. However, I do think some of his “optimistic” comments throughout this process have been dangerous. When a vast majority of those in his administration with high-level knowledge of the subject are saying one thing, and then the President comes in and provides conflicting information based on his hunches or gut feelings, it truly can be harmful. In his 3+ years in office, never has there been a more important time to get everyone on the same page and provide some consistency in what they are telling the country. To me that’s just leadership 101. I say this while also being of the mindset that Trump has been more “Presidential” in the past 3 weeks than he has at any point in his term.

what does Presidential even mean to you? Genuinely curious.

A friend of mine in the medical field that I know, said his hospital is only allotted 1 medical mask per 12 hour shift per medical staff. That's scary. Shortage of ventilators is beyond alarming. The fact that the Defense Production Act was only put into place a mere 3 days ago, IMO, will be detrimental to this country for long time and it will cost more American lives than it should have. Was that worth delaying the already inevitable market crash for a couple months? The very second people choose capital gains, portfolios, Economic greed/wealth over human lives, that's the exact second that they sold their soul.

A text from to the same friend in the medical field.
" some nurses and physicians I know from NYC have posted some serious things, stating that there are a lot of young adults in critical condition ventilated in the icu's. I Obviously can't post details outside of general information without violating hipaa. But for real, protect yourself and your loved ones fellas, make sure people are taking it seriously.

I've posted a link citing the feds were warned of ventilator shortage for the past two decades. Didn't look like any administration took it to seriously. We already have 2 car manufacturers, one appliance manufacture, and the Army making or prepping to make ventilators. Pretty sure there are more.

As far as the DPA act is concerned, it's not needed if companies are already willing. And even when used, it's not like companies can retool and start producing the next day even if invoked. GM starting slowing things and it was invoked. It's not a switch that's flicked and presto.

More than 50,000 will be produced in less than 100 days by GE and Ford alone. I think Dyson said they are making 15,000 that will start to be available in no more than 2 weeks. The army has also shown that they can run two patients off one ventilator with simple y-connectors and back filters.

I'm not diminishing the need, but let's hold our outrage and chicken little until we actually run out. Honest question, if we never run out, did Trump do a good job?

They are also deploying new mask sanitizing machines just approved by the FDA. Each machine can sanitize 120k masks per day, and each mask can be reused 20 times. The media slammed him for asking why we can't we sanitize and reuse masks... now we're doing just that. It's giving us 20x current capacity.

BTW, I also provide links to studies talking about temp and humidity impact to Covid earlier today.

Acosta being his typical douche bag confrontational self and attacking right now during the presser... Not a question relevant to the epidemic, simply asking gotcha stuff to get a reaction.

I'd tell CNN, "you're welcome to our pressers, but Acosta is not". He's just a pure douche. No journalistic value at all. He's nothing more than an antagonist. CNN allowing it to happen tells you all you need to know about CNN.

I agree that Acosta is a complete buffoon not even trying to perform an objective job as a reporter. And he, along with some other reporters, deserve all of the flak that DJT is giving them. However, sometimes Trump just flat out says the wrong information and then boasts about his knowledge about it. A reporter asked him, tbh, a question that has been harped on for many days now about the numbers of tests being performed and its comparison of tests performed here per capita vs in South Korea. Whatever is the right method to compare this can be debated but Trump said some thing like " South Korea is completely different than our country, we are spread out and they are densely populated (which is true) Do you know the population of Seoul? I know South Korea better than anyone. It's 38 million. We have nothing like it here in the US". Which is just not right. Seoul's population is 9.7 million. NYC's population is 8.4 million.

Army Chief of Eng is talking about all the good things they are doing partnering to get extra beds set up. He let it slip that a lot of stuff they're doing is really a local and state responsibility lol.... Says he does stuff that's mission essential, not perfect all encompassing solutions. I love this guy. No BS from him.

The metro of Seoul is at minimum 25M. It is also twice as dense as NYC.

Seeing that now as well. Fair enough. Props to South Korea for controlling their infection very well then (if their reporting is accurate, that is)

South Korea partnered closely with the private sector and didn't have all the FDA type hurdles. They've also done this dance before. The density, while potentially a con, was a pro for them in the way they handled it. They shut down travel quickly too.

I'm glad to see America along the same path now as well. Not that I am a regular poster on here by any means, been more of a lurker for many years, but I appreciate your factual insight on these matters YJ. This isn't the flu. it's not H1N1. Question... How beneficial would it have been to start making ventilators (at the start of what is and will go down as a once in a lifetime pandemic. I pray we don't see another like it) let's say January, perhaps even in February, perhaps even at the beginning of this month? Perhaps when he called for a loose restricted 15 day social distancing effort? During which he gave the ridiculous, shooting from the hip, " I think Churches will be filled by Easter". A lot of people dropped the ball. I don't put all the blame on Trump. I agree that those other Presidents may not have been prepared. They fortunately didn't have to go through a pandemic of this magnitude. I believe with all of my being that any former President, Republican or Democrat, would have handled this pandemic faster and more efficiently. There was a lot of unknown information granted. This wasn't a time for the President to be "Hedging his bets" on warmer weather being the solution. The pandemic was already well in motion. It was moving. It was moving when he compared it to the Flu. That was late February. It was moving when he downplayed it as "Democrats politicizing as their new Hoax." Once again, just late last month. It's still moving. And faster than ever. The unfortunate part is people will believe what they want and minds are made up. We need leadership, not misinformation.

Yep, I read the 5 links (all having to do with the same subject) you sent about the theory of warming weather and it's possible impact. Is that what made him so late to act?? No. He was late to act because he didn't want to have the Economy suffer in am election year. He was late to act because he values Money over human lives. I Is that what he was waiting for? A hunch or theory that wont matter to a lot of people who won't get to wait for warmer weather? Fauchi has done a great job navigating around the irresponsible comments and detrimental stigma's that Trump has created. Look, I'm really not bashing Republicans. I'm not trying say Democrats are Right in whining about Trump. When the President speaks it should matter. He has handled this terribly and needs to choose his words wisely for once. 53 percent of this country prances around in MAGA hats and he can do no wrong. 47 percent percent thinks he's the Antichrist but they can't get their party out to vote or come up with a real candidate under the age of 80. Me? I think he's just an old, delusional borderline sociopath, who is trying to campaign for November in the middle of a pandemic. He's just that out of touch and stubborn. I do see signs in his demeanor that he is actually processing the grim and startling projections. Which is a good sign. I have nothing against you and I wish everyone the best here. The ventilators ate going into production finally. Better late than never. Feel free to Google that. That math is scary. Hospitals are seeking help because they are running out and will definitely not have enough supplies. I sincerely hope that hard choices don't have be made for anyone here or any of your loved ones. That is what is taking place and it's just the start. God bless

Absolutely lovely and also disgusting to see the liberal media on twitter throwing a fit that MyPillow guy is targeting making 50K masks per day, and had the nerve to mention prayer at the White House today.

I didnt think they could get worse than they do when they complain that Bezos/Gates donations are "just like you donating $20," but they have found a way.

We now complain about private industry making apparently life saving products because they are a company owned by a religious Republican.

The press is the enemy of the people, really no other way of putting it at this point.

Except they're not. They are making surgical style ones that might actually be worse than normal surgical style ones that they could probably just as easily make because he wants to make them "comfortable". And I don't know if you can believe this, but most of us really don't care if someone is religious or what religion, we would just rather not have a person calling the president some sort of prophet during what is supposed to be an informational press conference.

But go ahead and keep trashing a goofy dude doing an undeniably good thing for the country; I always enjoy when people make me look good and this is one of those times lmao.

I have a mother that just went through her second bout with lung/breast cancers last Christmas, so I'm probably more concerned that most given she's still struggling with health and immune system after radiation/chemo.

What I've provided to you has been factual, non political data. What I see above is something closer to MSNBC.

What I would challenge you to do is read more, and watch CNN/MSNBC less. Look at responses country to country. Also, be honest about what people knew, and when. Quite simply, when you say we should have ordered ventilators in January, it's simply foolish. Nobody new what the impacts were going to look like abroad at that point, and we simply didn't know much about the disease at the time either. The WHO of all people were still carrying water for China at that point and said "no human to human transmission".

Compare responses by country. For instance, Italy was hammered early. Italy has the #1 rated health system (I've always said the ratings were a joke), yet they did not have stockpiled ventilators and many say their tests were severely flawed. They also failed to shut down travel.

The US acted much quicker in shutting down travel, and bought themselves what is projected to be around 6 weeks. Still, Trump was highly criticized as racist and xenophobic for cutting off flights for anyone that had been to China to the previous 2 weeks. Biden and Schumer called the shut down of travel unnecessary and an overreaction. So what is it? Did he overreact, or was he too slow? What would Biden had done?

On that note, let's say Biden was in charge. So he would have allowed travel to China to continue. The US travels by far the most of any Western country, and by a great deal (more the double the next, and more than triple etc. the remaining). Can you imagine having 10 fold the cases we have right, and having them much earlier in the game? The hospitals would have already been overwhelmed. Also, take a look at Canada's response. They were far slower in most areas. They just don't have near as much travel/traffic and are much less dense.

I too am concerned about ventilators as my mother would surely need one should she become infected. Cuomo's daily briefing has been the battle cry for ventilators, but his numbers are based on worst case projections. He's admitted he doesn't know for sure how many, and how soon. If you look at other countries, they all are scrambling for ventilators for the most part, and are now asking the US for help given they believe we will end up having a surplus when it's all said and done.

On the topic of ventilators.... So NY has already said it can double dip by splitting all ventilators, and nationally they are retrofitting anesthesia machines (supposedly an easy conversion, and more of those are available than actual ventilators) as well as BIPAPs . Those are three things that can be done now to existing equipment. The NYP reported that the Northwell Hospital group stated that “This will significantly increase our capacity,”. And that's all before new ventilators are produced and delivered. Yet you never hear about that ingenuity, or impact to the numbers from MSM.

In short, read more, watch less. Things are still unfolding, and there still a lot we don't know. All countries are still struggling with it, and China is bold faced lying. If you don't know how others have responded, your criticism lacks baseline. If you don't know the facts about the issues, you're just another uninformed soul adding to the confusion.

But you have no problem with Acosta and others, wasting our time with zero attempt at journalism.
