Hey dudes, an interesting work opportunity could lead to my relocation to Buffalo, NY for a couple years. I have literally never stepped foot in the state of NY, none the less Buffalo. I am we'll aware of the harsh winters (I grew up in MI), but that is about it. Can you dudes help a brutha out?

- what is the quality of life?
- what is the city like?
- what are the best parts of town?
- what's the cost of living like?
- what is there to do for fun?
- what's traffic like?
- will the Bills ever not suck again?

Any info is greatly appreciated. Go Irish!

Wooly... buddy.... come on man. You're really contemplating leaving the legalized state of CO? J/J....

I had friends there until about 5 years ago. They said the cost of living was decent, but complained consistently about taxes. If memory serves, utilities were a bit high too. They didn't care so much for the city, but they did like the burb they were in. Not sure which. They also hated the politics. They did have good things to say about the night life.

i visited there once, and know a few ND guys in the area. The water smells and tastes like ***, but other than that it's a cool place. Beef on 'weck is really ****ing good, and they have this hot sauce chicken dish that will really blow your mind.

I'm from Niagara Falls... How old are you, what part of Buffalo you looking to move to (actual city or suburb), are you into clubs/bars, etc... I can answer probably any question you have with a little direction... If you wanna PM me or just disclose it on here, I'll be willing to help out...

Generally speaking :

Its a medium sized city with your typical city characteristics. There are good areas and then areas you should prob avoid.

There's a club scene called chippewa, its a large strip with night clubs

They have a bar scene near by elmwood.

There's an art district/theater district/and some very good sport teams

There are at least two casinos in a 25 minute radius, 3 if you want to cross the bridge into Canada.

Cost of living depends on the area. Typically owning a home is incredibly cheap when compared to other places. Taxes and utilities suck, public schooling is questionable, and the politics suck. Its barely starting to change but only over the last couple years.

... Like i said more than happy to help.

Ya you can't beat the wings there, plus it's close to Toronto and Niagra Falls.

Also, you could do the 6 hour drive and visit me in NYC.

I'm 30 and married, so I am more concerned with nice parts of town for restaraunts than clubs. I work 60+ hours a week in commercial banking, but like drink beer and fish on my days off. I also am interested in what the best parts of town for living are. What parts should I be avoiding? I can live anywhere in the greater Buffalo area.

Thanks again, fellas

I went to UB from 2002-2005 and thoroughly enjoyed the area.

Here are some things I remember.. Some things may have changed since..

- Football (NFL, UB Bulls)
- Hockey
- Cleveland Indians had a farm team there when I was around.
- Regular concerts/event at HSBC arena.(not sure if named that anymore)
- Chippewa is a solid bar/club scene.
- Taste of Buffalo is a great time.. outdoor drinking/food stands/ live music
- Duff's wings and Anchor Bar wings.. BEST EVER.

The winters are harsh but the summers are plentiful with an array of events..

If you like to drink beer, how can you leave CO?!

Fort Collins Brewery, New Belgium, Odell, Left Hand, Ska, Great Divide, Breckenridge, Oskar Blues, Avery, Boulder Brewing Co....

And don't get me started on the brew pubs you'd be leaving...

IIRC, our own Rocket89, better known as One Foot Down's Eric Murtaugh, was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. I'm sure he'd have lots of good info for you.

do business up there about once per Q:
people ive met--VERY friendly. most down to earth. think tim russert. rip.
never had a bad meal up there: some DAMN good restaurants-especially italian.
is it cold? sure it is but just south of buff is where the dang awful snowfalls are consistent
but from my experience snow aspect way overblown. (its not a "tundra"---no worse than MI/CO)
econimically it hasnt had booms or busts like many areas its a pretty steady market up there on the biz side.
not sure on the schools k-12 but im sure like anywhere the better the town the better the schools.

Sorry couldn't resist.

I have some friends from there; they loved it, but I don't know anything about the area personally.

Best of luck.

They have one of the most fan supportive NHL teams there. Been there once because I flew in and drove to Viagra falls. There was a lot of snow. I was only in and out so I can't really give you any real advice. Niagra falls is really cool though. Well, the actual waterfall part anyways.

Ha. I get this a lot. Guys wonder how the guy in the corner office that wears slippers (I really do in the office) and plays guitar at lunch keeps passing them for promotions. I was the guy in your college business classes that you assumed was a trust fund baby mooching through college and smoking weed. But, like a snake in the grass, was really the kid with a Midwestern work ethic paying his own way through through college. Never judge a book by its cover my man, because they might just take your job.

Thanks again everybody for the advice. I would love to hear more about the areas of town. If I end up taking it, I want to share some brews with those of you in the area.

And just to reidderate, I grew up in MI, live in CO and have a dad that has lived in SC for 20 years. I'm pretty confident that there is no weather that will surprise me at this point.

Don't know much about Buffalo, but I do know people have sex in the bathrooms during Bills games.

My only contribution (and let's be honest, can we really call it that?) to this thread.

I thought about killing myself, but then I realized to commit suicide in Buffalo is redundant.
Thommie Walsh, a.k.a. Bobby

I worked for a national company with offices across the country. We had an office in Hamburg, southeast of the city. Despite the prodigious snowfall, they never closed the office on account of snow. The office manager organized a snowmobile ride sharing setup. On snow days when the roads closed down, those with snowmobiles picked up fellow employees that didn't have one. Nobody missed work. Yes, that manager became a partner.

Tough winters but then you're from CO.

My take on Buffalo(its been ten years since I last visited): Its OK

Like most places...its what you make it.

Some good food,, but no reason to move there.

Winters suck. The city couldn't maintain a road to save their life.

I think for every person you found that loved it , you'd find ten that wondered how they ended up there and dreamed of moving to Colorado.

Compared to Colorado, fresh water fishing sucks everywhere except Montana and parts of Utah or Wyoming. So there is no fair comparison.

If my boss wanted me to move to Buffalo, I'd only do it for a stack of cash.

Typing on a phone sucks

Good luck with your decision wooly!

Obviously doesnt apply to you anymore, but I remember last year I read an article that the city was trying to get younger professionals right out of college to move there. They were offering to pay back student loans up to like 100,000 I believe. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing.

Hey i live in williamsville area and i love the area. Clarence and williamsville are probably the nicest parts of the town and the cost is not too expensive but taxes are high because its in new york and new york taxes are ridiculous. Bills are always gonna suck so not much to say there(im not a fan anyways). Traffic isnt taht bad most of the time unless there is a big snowstorm then it can get hectic. The past couple of years we have been having very mild winters and their projecting that for this year as well. summers have been really hot the past couple of years and not alot of rain it seems like so summers are really nice around here. Ive lived here all my 22years of life and honestly i thought i wanted to get out of here when i was in high school but its really not that bad of a place to live as long as you get use to snow.
Where abouts is the job?
