I agree Mac Jones made the smart choice to go the route he did. It's just kind of annoying hearing people claim he's the next Sheldon Cooper because he's getting his masters in 2.5 years, without realizing what it's in.

Who claimed that?

If that happens Kelly would lose the majority of the fan base, including me. Buchner has to be given the chance. It's Kelly's last hope.

So, let me get this straight, he did not give Everett Golson the reigns enough for you? Or Dayne Crist? Or Kizer?

Goodness this is a horrible take. ND is not ever and will never EVER be the home to top-flight QBs.

The greatest QB in ND history was not even a first or second rounder....and likely would have been a UFA today based on measuarables.

This idea that he HAS TO give the reigns to an overrated recruit just to keep the "fanbase" pleased is just ludicrous.

ND has never been a QB mecca, literally ever. Outside of Montana and Theismann, I cannot think of a remotely solid NFL QB who played for ND in college. Certainly none in the last 40 years.

Either the kid shouldn't be in college and Alabama is exploiting him, or he's smart enough to study a real subject and he's being parked in an eligibility program where his shot at college is being wasted. Either way, shame on Alabama.

Maybe he should have went to Notre Dame and majored in tv, movies, or whatever degree it’s called that many of the players there do. He certainly was smart enough to get in to school at Notre Dame. Maybe he just wasn’t good enough to play football there. And I won’t bring up a guy like Tuitt. We all know what he scored on his ACT and STILL got accepted to the only university in the entire country that educates their athletes. Either way, both Jones and Tuitt will make a lot more money in their lifetimes than either you or I so who’s really the dummies here? Enjoy.

This is kind of true, but recruiting isn't trending towards striking distance. It is basically just more of the same. Recruiting needs to be turned up in several ways - evaluation, identification, communication, and closing the deal.

Even with Deshaun Watson this ND team wasn't winning a title. The athletes on the outside couldn't run with their opponent which is a recipe for disaster eventually. Maybe ND scores 35 but Bama would've just scored 56. They would have had the ball more, and felt threatened. Recruiting needs to be better at many positions, not just QB.

If you think Bama was really only 17 points better than ND I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.

I didn’t say that, but if you’re watching the same game, you saw that we’re not missing that many pieces, one being the QB, but I will say I would have liked my chances with Watson under center instead of Book.

The London Bridge is in Arizona so there must be some water there.

ND has had some great QB’s over the years, but they don’t need to be successful in the NFL to be considered a success. Look at all of the great college QB’s that were can’t miss prospects that never panned out.

I'm over thinking just a little bit less of high caliber student athletes that choose to go to LSU, Bama, etc.

What an amazing experience that would be, and you can still make your own way just fine. Probably even have a few years in the NFL. Then you get to turn around and cheer for a team you know has a shot year in and year out, for your entire life on this planet. I totally get it and no longer am bummed if a stud student goes SEC or elsewhere, although I really hope they give ND a fair look, how can I pass judgement.

Film, Theater, and Television. And I agree that it is so cringe when ND fans pivot to "aCaDeMiC sTaNdArDs" every time we lose to a football factory.

Yes, ND makes sure kids are in real majors taking the same real classes other students take. Yes, ND has more stringent admissions standards than many schools for players. No, ND players are not the only ones getting an education they can or will use... and no, every student at another school isn't being "exploited". What people don't realize is that for many of these kids going to Big State U is not only a huge academic accomplishment for them and their family but it's also a better fit/better comfort level. Live and let live. As long as someone isn't breaking one of the cardinal rules of negative recruitment about ND, I don't give a shit.

If we have any hope of winning a CFP game we need an experienced elite QB with a good surrounding cast. Buchner is only guy who gives us a shot at that in the near future imo. Pyne may be good but he doesn't have a very high ceiling. I don't foresee an elite transfer QB coming here. I doubt Kelly stays more than 5 more years. So yeah, I think Kelly's hope of winning a National championship falls on the development of Buchner.

With good health, the window to earn a college degree spans about 75% of your life

With great health, the window to earn an NFL contract spans about 5% of your life

Im spending that 5% at the place that best helps me earn that contract, every time, if thats my goal

We had 4 that won the Heisman. That’s not bad. 5 Super Bowl wins, not terrible. Three quarterbacks picked in the first two rounds in the last 14 years. Could be worse.

I saw several people after the Alabama game asking how Jones wasn't on our radar since he was good enough for Alabama and was ready to graduate already.
That blockhead Goolsby was saying the same thing on the BGI after-game podcast.

It's not about high admissions standards. It's not about making all football players study engineering or physics. It's about 1) only offering majors that exist for a reason other than keeping athletes eligible and 2) only accepting players who, with the right support system, can be successful in those majors. That's not even a high bar to clear, but Alabama's MA in stadium popcorn sales doesn't pass the test.

I think you have to do everything you can to get Buchner ready. A year where you can win 8 games hopefully while giving Buchner valuable experience letting the new Olineman gel and get young guys on the outside the experience. Because personally I’d rather not have Buchner’s first start of organized football since his Junior year of high school to be at the Horeshoe.

Curious what the pitch was to Coan from CBK. I have a hard time believing the kid would waste his graduate transfer on anything that wasn't near a certainty to start.

I HOPE BK gives Buchner a fair shake, especially since he's EE, but Coan must've felt comfortable enough to pull the trigger on ND.

Personally prefer riding Buchner's freshman year, potential growing pains and all, but fully preparing for Coan to be the guy under center in Tallahassee.

Redshirting and then starting your 2nd year worked out for Golson. If TB comes in and is ready, he'll play. I doubt he will be. Everything seems to point to him needing a year of acclimating. It's a tough adjustment. Hopefully he gets some pt in some blowouts but we know how that goes.

Kelly does have something to sell besides PT though - a graduate degree from ND. I always felt like ND had a leg up on recruiting graduate transfers and it is an area they should fully explore every year.

We know it is hard to sell a 4 year degree to elite 18 year old athletes. However it is much easier to sell a 1 year graduate degree to a 21 year old. You probably won't get elite skill positions guys this way, because they are already in the League by then. But you can absolutely find quality depth in the portal, and once in a while you can find an elite guy that just wants a change of scenery.

That 2013 class could’ve been so much better. BK flirting with Philly cost us Anzalone, and I believe the stupid foreign language requirement (which BK should’ve told the administration to toss) cost us Vanderdoes and Al-Quadin Muhammad. That’s 3 NFL draft picks who would’ve been in their prime in 2015 and 2016. Imagine that 2015 front 7 with Okwara/Rochell/Muhammad/Day/Vanderdoes on the DL and Smith/Anzalone/Onwualu at LB. BK also could’ve had Zeke Elliott, who wanted to come to ND as a RB, but BK wanted him at LB.

Few days late, but we were never getting Anzalone. Florida was his father's alma mater, and it was a matter of time before he committed there. He committed to ND as a safety net knowing we wouldn't pull the scholly if he got hurt or something.

Yep, was waiting for that Florida offer. We've been on the beneficial end of that as well. Comes with recruiting.

The ideal situation is what Clemson did with Bryant/Lawrence. Play the veteran guy, but sprinkle the freshman in at meaningful points of the game... not just with a gadget package, or when you have a 3-score lead and you're going to have him doing nothing but handing the ball off.

Put him in there for a series against Purdue when the score is 10-10 and you need to keep the full offense available. You can't wait and hope for perfect, stress-free opportunities.

You should probably do some research into what Sports Hospitality encompasses instead of saying stupid stuff like "stadium popcorn sales." I'll help you out. It's just the Sports Management (also known as Sports Administration at some schools) program renamed. And by the way, ND offers it as a major with several of your athletes majoring in it. Took me about 2 minutes to find the following, which you could've done too.

Ummm in week 5 Trevor took over for Bryant and then Bryant sent a text message to Dabo telling him he was quitting the team. Yeah it ultimately worked out - they won the Nati - but I don't think ideal is quite the word that Clemson folks would use.
