I don't think it's even more money that would sway BK. A high profile program + recruiting hotbed + lax (or at least lesser) admission standards = BK's type of thing, imo.

I think he truely loves ND, but he always wants to move up the ladder. Obviously that next step is the NFL, but he still needs to conquer that D1 title. If he feels he can't get it at ND, it wouldn't surprise me if he looked at the UT job.

every coach's type of thing! They are all super competitive and all want to win. Texas is probably the dream job of every coach.

Can you imagine the complex ND fans would develop if Kelly voluntarily left for another college job?

We'd be permanently damaged. Like an heiress who, having fallen on hard times, is finally forced to pawn her treasured pearls. Our self image would never be the same.

If Texas would throw Nick Saban type money ( or better ) out at BK then do we really think he would stay @ ND ????? Hell it wouldn't supprise me if they went after Nick Saban and it would proably be a 60 million dollar deal, obviously because of his success so them shelling out 35 to 40 million @ BK would just be a drop in the bucket for them.

I'd be very surprised if it'd be about the money. At some point, how much do you need? And he's got as high-profile a job as exists in all of football, not just college. So it's not about the glory.
The NFL? OK. I get that. But the only reason(s) I could see Kelly leaving for another college job were if he really felt he'd have a better shot at winning a title (and that's a very short list of programs. Not even sure Texas is on it) or if he truly became frustrated with the academic/university restrictions at Notre Dame. These two issues are not unrelated.
And if he did, I agree, we'd be devastated as a fan base. It's one thing to not be able to lure the likes of Saban/Meyer/Stoops away from plum jobs to come here. But to lose the best coach we've had in two decades? Yikes.
FWIW, I don't think he'd be a good fit, culturally, in Texas. He's a Northeast/Midwest kind of guy, and that matters. That's what I'll keep telling myself until they've hired a new head coach.

I don't really understand this discussion. He got the extension. It probably involved a hefty raise and large buyout poison pill. We won't know specifics because ND is a private university. But everything that can reasonably be done has been done at this juncture.

It's always possible that ANY coach can get poached. If aliens come down from outer space and offer $15mil a year it's going to be hard to turn down. Les Miles, Nick Saban, Bob Stoops... you name it, there is always rumors of someone leaving for another gig.

BTW, if I had to bet, Texas looks in their back yard at Art Briles.

Totally agree. He's Chip Kelly without the publicity. He's a complete genius.

And he does it with the "outcast" three-star recruits in Texas, with the occasional 4-star stud thrown in (which is more common post-RGIII). He does it with smart, fast playcalling and player development. And speed.

Having said that, I'd be shocked if Baylor loses more than 3 games this year. I'm seeing 10-2, potential Big 12 champs for the Bears.

On the radio here in Chicago, they were speculating (claiming sources) that BK goes to the NFL next year and Pat Fitzgerald would be hired.
They went on to say that Pat secretly wants the job and would leave NU for South Bend if given the chance.
Let me also say that this radio show are notorious ND haters.

He has a great offensive mind, but he's too "Texas" to be the HC at the University of Notre Dame. I don't have anything negative to say about him, but a lot more goes into the job at ND than X's and O's and I don't think he'd be the right fit.

That's a good point, but to be fair he hasn't had a chance to show his "politicing" skills at Baylor aside from RGIII's Heisman campaign, but that basically ran itself.

He's just spent his entire career in the state of Texas. He's an old school Texan and they're a different breed. I highly doubt, at age 58 (at season's end), he would leave Texas. My guess is he either takes the UT job at the end of the season or retires with Baylor.

Yeah, this really makes almost no sense. Especially since I've heard from multiple people that Fitzgerald is pretty darn anti-ND.

Bob Davie, at the time, was the "right fit"....

Guess what the "right fit" at ND is right now???? WINNING.

I don't care if it's a stuffy midwest guy, Laid back Cali guy, or Southern man....WIN.

Sometimes I think we get to caught up in this "image" of an ND man and forget that, these days, the job of the football coach is to win games...not fit a image.

Bobby Petrino is a winner (72-26 as a CFB Head coach). Lets not say image is not important.

Do you know why that is Lax? Just curious.

ND was his dream school and didn't offer him out of high school. Went to NW and tore it up there as a LB. I believe he's had some pretty negatve ND comments in the past.

Pretty sure it stems from being passed over by ND due to his lack of elite size/athleticism. Same reason he didn't make it a single year in the pros despite being a 2x player of the year and college football hall of famer.

It's crazy to have so many ND haters in Chicago... all of them seemingly with axes to grind against ND or Kelly from when they were HS prospects.

I don't know. Not sure there's a coaching job in America where image matters more than Notre Dame.
Yes, it's always easier when you're winning, but you're not always going to win. And when you're not, you get more slack if Notre Dame people, you know, like you. On the flip side you're more likely to be successful if you understand the culture and politics of the place and work with that, rather than flailing against it.
These were problems, to varying degrees, for Davie, Willingham and Weis. And they're part of what makes the job so damn hard.

Whoa. There has to be more to that story, right? I mean that's not even competitive. Butch Jones is making 4 times what Kelly is making, if we go by that data.
