Hrm....Rutgers? That would almost be like a home game for them. Very winnable opponent, but they would probably come out with a Pittsburgh mentality and we could be flat.

Looking at Notre Dame Fighting Irish's bowl option - ESPN
Poinsettia Bowl is easily the most appealing of these, especially if the opponent is Fresno State or Boise. We'd probably lose to Fresno State because of their high-power passing game but I'd love to beat down Boise State.

The only issue with that bowl is the relationship it has to the MAC:
“We would not renege on our agreement with the Mid-American Conference,” Poinsettia Bowl executive director Bruce Binkowski said Sunday night. “We have a long-standing relationship with them, either as a backup or a primary team through 2019. And I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize that.”
He also said he hasn’t been in discussions with anyone but the MAC to this point, but knows there can be backdoor deals struck between teams, leagues and bowls.
“The only way those work is if everybody could be made happy and whole,” he said.

Oh, thats not bad but its not that great either. Pretty small time. I'd much prefer the Pinstripe I think, even though its cold for the players. Be a nice turn out of fans and more of a ND type game.
Whoa! Scandahoovian… absolutely! *Calls Kelly* He said he's totally on board. Only problem is they'll be playing in a dirt field (farm) with trees for goal posts...

A MAC team would snap up the Pinstripe in a heartbeat. None of them turn a profit so the $1.8 million payout is much more alluring than going to the Poinsettia.

Looks like it is almost a certainty ND is playing Boise State in a bowl game (either Poinsetta or in San Diego) w/ the Pinstripe bowl probably being the only other possibility. Seems now we are looking at a interim coached Boise team as an opponent. I really like that matchup for us - a marquee name, a weak team. A nice win could be very good for the offseason.

Sucks that the payout for Poinsetta is one of the lowest bowl payouts at $500k/team. Would have been nice to get the $1.8M from the pinstripe with the rumored changes coming to the Stadium.
Obviously I don't think cash is an issue with ND, just would be nice to have that extra $$.

Me too! Would have been sweet, Ive been tempted to go along to FF for this bowl the last few years but never did (Thanks Purdue). Isnt it going to be called the Detroit Lions bowl or something from next year?

That's really awkward. Reallllllllllllllly awkward. On one hand, the coach surely wants to go out on top... on the other, how do the players respond to someone like him... both in practice and in the bowl game? Very weird.

Look at how the players at UC responded to the last two coaches leaving them. When BK left, he did not handle it well, and the players hated him for leaving. When Butch Jones left for Tennessee, the UC players gave him a standing ovation when he announced it to them.
CP is so well liked I can really see his players wanting to send him out with another huge win over a big name program.
This match-up wouldn't have concerned me until these new circumstances have popped up.

That provision will be negotiated out of the buyout. It's not good for Washington or Boise State to hold Petersen in Boise after a change is announced.

Lose/Lose imo if ND plays BSU. Boise State isn't a big deal anymore to begin with. Throw in that they just lost their biggest asset. If ND loses, it's a HUGE DEAL. A win, is just "meh."

Good question. On one hand, they loved him enough to play for him and he put them on the college football map and, if they're honest with themselves, they can't expect Michaelangelo to paint doghouses his whole life. So maybe they win one for Old Pete. On the other hand, he is saying 'adios' for greener pastures, which is a slight. It's sort of odd clause to have in the contract for the reason you suggest, unless BSU just wants it as an option (so they don't get screwed at the last minute), but they really plans to have someone else coach.
Maybe it's worse for a bowl opponent to have the assistant coach coach the game, because the kids want to show they're good even without Petersen. But maybe Petersen is really the brains of the operation who could come up with a great game plan that the assistant isn't capable of developing. I don't know. I'm probably over-thinking it.

Parties can't contractually penalize the other for breaking a contract so a common method to disincentivize it is to add provisions that make extricating from the contract a big pain in the ass for the other side. The power to hold Petersen hostage for an extra month and a half can be a powerful tool to get more advantageous terms. It might not just be money, it might be agreements that he can't take coaches with him, etc. I can't think of a straightforward football reason for the clause so I assume it's more strategic in nature.

There are limited options. A lot of teams don't want to play ND at bowl time. Also, ND has to pick a team and then find a venue this year.
Most bowls have secondary tie ins, so we would not be as likely to find a seat at the table in a high paying gala.
Boise is overmatched this year against ND. Let the kids enjoy the sun in SD or on Oahu!
