only band I ever saw play without a back-up band,,,straight up Led Zep.

I don't think they ever had an opening act after their first year or so. They said that they didn't need any opening act to sell more tickets, didn't see any reason to pay another band, and had enough great material to play for hours. Monster act.

Listening to Spotify and thought of this thread. I'm listening to an official Spotify playlist called Good Times: Great Oldies. To me, Oldies means 50s and 60s, intersecting with Classic Rock at The Beatles. This playlist legit includes "I Don't Want to Wait," released in 1997, along with loads of 1980s Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elton John, etc. The closest I've seen to actual Oldies has been George Jones. What millennial nonsense is this?

Absolutely correct on the timeline. Oldies ends with the Beatles.

If you're our age yeah, but the late eighties/ early nineties are about as far away for us as the late sixties/early seventies were when we listened to "oldies" growing up.

Yep, I oddly had a discussion with my daughter about this before dropping her off to school this morning... oldies to her is apparently anything before 2000.... lol

Interesting. When for the Beatles? 64? 67? 70? What would you consider most of Stevie Wonder's catalogue?

"Oldies" is its own genre which butts up against the Beetles. It's not a fluid label. Just like Classic Rock doesn't include the Red Hot Chili Peppers - it ends with bands in the 80s.

Not saying that's wrong, it could be technically true, but that's a weird label to slap on a certain time period of pop/rock without consideration for relative age. Especially considering that the songs within the designation got that label because they were, well... Old at the time of being labeled.

So is GNR classic rock, the band that killed classic rock or both?

To me, hair metal =\= classic rock. Nor is anything afterwards, certainly not GNR, nor Nirvana, nor RHCP, and certainly not Foo Fighters

Right. I always interpret hair metal as the beginning of the end for classic rock. There were still some of those bands around, but hair metal was taking over, and it stops that genre.

I would also say that those you listed, while all part of different rock genres, were/are part of what I would label as the alt rock "era."

Not same category but if you are only dividing into to eras then prob rock / punk is the natural break in my opinion. My favorites are the Stones and they span everything.

"Oldies" is essentially a proper noun. I don't view it as relative at all. "Throwback" is the more appropriate term for music from the past based on someone's age.

I have trouble deciding which of the two is the absolute worst band of all time - Queen or Kiss. Both make my ears bleed.

You have to be kidding me right? Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time man!

So you like these guys more. Noted.

They were decent rock balladeers until all that Disco, buzz killing, bullshit sucked the life blood out of them, while dangling a purse filled with 30 pieces of silver in their faces.
