I didn't mean to slight Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker in any way. But thought Cream deserved a mention, and at least one of Clapton's bands should be on any list of the best.

Cream is definitely worth mentioning. I had a poster of Disraeli Gears under a black light in my bedroom when I was a pup. Still listen to Cream all the time. Even though he turned out a lot of great stuff after Cream, I believe that is Clapton's best work.

I'm also in the group that isn't a big fan of the Stones. I liked their early work the best, but wasn't wowed. I won't turn the station if they come on, but I also don't own one piece of their music.

Springsteen is another one I never got. Great appeal to many others though. Aerosmith, another that didn't dazzle me after their early work.

A Few tidbits some of you may already know.
1. Even though CCR is known for their bayou southern music, they are actually from Northern California.
2. Three Dog Night got their name from an expression on the temperature for the night. some say it came from Alaska, some from Africa. If it was pretty cold, it was going to take three dogs to keep you warm. Thus Three Dog Night.
3. Steely Dan is in reference to a dildo in William Burroughs' book "Naked Lunch."

Truly feel bad for kids of this new generation when it comes to music.

While we had literally hundreds of rock and roll bands and artists, all with unique musical styles from all over the world to listen to, go to their concerts--what do they have?
Taylor Swift? Beiber? Rap?

growing up in the 70's, it seemed like new (classic) albums were coming out almost weekly!

You people seem to all be answering three different questions. There's a huge difference between "best," "greatest," and "favorite."

The "greatest" band of all time is The Beatles, and it's not a matter of debate. "Best" and "favorite" are entirely subjective.

Rush is absolute trash. I don't know why anyone would voluntarily listen to a Rush song.

i used to not like Rush in the 70's. I started getting into them in the 80's and have liked them ever since. Same thing happened to me with the Allman Brothers.

understand the sentiment on the Beatles, love the beatles, but lets be clear, they never even toured past 1966.
even they have said the were a "studio band" (record and hit makers) which is fine, and the argument can be made they were and are the greatest most influential band of all time, but I find it hard to "close the debate" when a band never really took it to the road in a major and sustained way. that is the essence rock and roll to me--live and on stage.

just one mans opinion. (sgt peppers may be the greatest and most influential album ever)

Oh, I think this seriously glosses over the Beatles touring. You absolutely have to factor in their '61 to '63 performances which were integral to building their cohesiveness and their popularity in England and Europe.

From there you have several world tours, a collection of some of the most famous television performances, and their groundbreaking use of large stadiums.

I don't think it's a big deal at all that they didn't tour for 3 of their 9 years. To this day, their performances are still more profound and impactful as any act.

I feel bad for those too young to have experienced the live shows of the 70's. We were past the 60's where artists just stood there and played without putting much of a show on, and it was before the excesses of later years where the show was much bigger than the music (and the music was often pre-recorded instead of being played live). To see Zeppelin, The Stones, Clapton, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult and their laser show, ZZ Top, The Who... all those classic acts featuring superb musicians who could actually play an instrument and tearing it up without lip-syncing.

I saw ZZ when they toured with a bison and a vulture on stage. Saw Little Feat on tour a few months before Lowell died. Saw The Stones at their best. Stood leaning on the edge of the stage close enough to hear God discuss with his band whether to play Lay Down Sally or Cocaine next and smell how drunk he was. Saw Skynyrd tear up Free Bird and breathed in enough second-hand pot smoke to be half stoned. Got splattered with fake blood and my ears rang for days after seeing KISS in '75. Those were glorious days for concerts.

Most bands tour to promote and sell their albums. The Beatles were so good they didn't need to. This debate is over.

Well best is just as subjective. The Beatles were GREAT song writers and good to very good musicians. However I rank numerous other bands way ahead of them on musical talent alone, such as Rush, Mahvishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Steely Dan, Allman Brothers, Pantera, Genesis, Pink Floyd etc.

The Beatles were great at song writing and greatly affected popular culture but that does not mean they are great technically, which I highly value as far as judging a band. Mahvishnu Orchestra, Weather Report among others are so technically great that they dont fall into popular music for that genre.

But this whole thing is very subjective so calm your tits and keep your panties under control.

To have a meaningful discussion we need to set some boundaries:
What classifies as classic rock? What are its defining characteristics?
What time periods?
What genres can be included?
How do we weight technical ability versus popularity, because most people do not appreciate technical ability but prefer easily digestible songs with catchy hooks.

I could go on but will rest here.

I'm not a Rush fan in general and I'm in the perfect demo for their fanbase BUT if you don't recognize the greatness of these songs you sleep in a Magic Mike t-shirt and you definitely never had a Trans Am with a Pioneer Supertuner and four 6x9 tri-axials in your rear deck.
