It's really not. Temporary bans are very rarely issued without being preceded by multiple warnings via PM. And permanent bans are virtually never issued to those who haven't received at least 1-2 temporary bans already. I'm not sure what your experience has been on other message boards, but I find they all fall into one of two categories: (1) Wild West (virtually no moderation); or (2) Dictatorship (mods ban people inconsistently and arbitrarily). By internet standards, IE's Due Process is very hard to match. Hell, we cut repeat offenders a lot more slack than most foreign countries do.
Superficially, that's accurate, and we would all do well to remember the inherent frivolity of the forum and its reason for existing. But it's really more than that. In my totally unbiased opinion, IE is the
best NDFB forum on the web (by a large margin), and it's also a rare online space where one can civilly debate things like politics, philosophy and religion. Many of us spend a
lot of time contributing in various ways to IE, and that investment makes it more than just a stupid message board.
So I'd argue that this online space is pretty special, but its unique qualities aren't accidental; they're the product of: (1) a lot of very intelligent, funny and/or well-connected people who choose to contribute here rather than elsewhere; and (2) a team of volunteer moderators whose uncompensated time and effort prevents the board from devolving into a sh!t show.*
There are some posters here who choose to define their online personas as contrarians or rebels, and that's fine as far as it goes. There's nothing inherent in becoming a mod that entitles us to significant deference (which is a big reason why we try to be as transparent and democratic with these decisions as possible). But I get annoyed when someone implies that the Mods are petty tyrants ruining this board for honest ND fans. It's not an easy job, we receive no special perks for doing it, and IE's intermittent periods of lawlessness have proven that the quality of discourse around here is
not improved by
laissez-faire moderating. Perhaps one of our veterans will be kind enough to share some stories from the Bad Old Days.
See my first paragraph above. Perma-bans aren't handed out lightly, so we take it seriously when a member actively helps someone circumvent such a ban. Koon was either getting perma-banned himself, or receiving a long vacation. Most of us voted for the latter. He'll be back when the season starts.
*Since I spend far more time arguing philosophy, politics and religion than moderating, I'm referring mostly to my hard-working peers.
