Time to rise up and create a new IE, one that's free from tyrannical rule.
In all seriousness, it's something we should probably consider sometime in the future anyway, right? The board is kind of behind on maintenance and running on fairly old software at this point. We also have issues with doing things like updating the front page, right?
Not sure if anyone followed the ShaggyTexas/SurlyHorns saga, but a few months ago the ShaggyTexas admin/owner was sued over a business deal not related to the site (It had to do with the servers that ShaggyTexas ran off for a separate business venture). In essence it was a personal vendetta against the guy that ran the site, Blacklab. Rather than let the new ownership take over, all the active posters gave the new ownership a big "FU" and started a new board with all the updated bells and whistles along with a smooth new format. That might be something IE will need to consider (Jumping ship) if the ownership continues to be hands off and we lack administration powers to keep things current and fresh.
As someone who has worked as a professional web developer, I can tell you that running IE on an older version of the vBulletin codebase isn't really the core issue. We are
waaaay ahead of most fansites and it has nothing to do with the codebase the site runs on.
Look at the copyright at the footnote of the site.
*cough*2013*cough*
Probably the last time a web developer worked on the site.
We're one of the marquis college football boards on the internet because of the
database; that is to say the culmination of all the members, contributors of other fanbases that come for the goods, but stay because of the quality of information and discourse and of course, the outstanding moderation.
Uluk, your observations about the Bevo are potient because it exposes the nature of a traffic generating venture as large as IE to the realities of a site with this amount of traffic. I mentioned earlier in a reply that to the best of my recollection the Gentlemen's Club was shut down due to a unilateral decision by the ownership. Again, to the best of my recollection the owner viewed the site as a property and wasn't invested as a fan as much as a financial investment. The legal action in the Bevo fiasco is probably a good indicator of what the current owner was trying to avoid.
From my perspective the site may seem "dated" because the present owner views IE as an investment entity that is a known commodity. Server costs-- check. Paying a marginal fee to those that can fix any glarring IT related issues-- check. Return on Investment monthly-- check.
To the best of my knowledge, the moderators are all unpaid Irish fans, creating for the owner a self-sustaining entity that returns on his or her investment without intervention.
Not a bad investment.
What we don't have is a developer who updates the backend of the site and maintains the "little things." The owner is not paying anyone to update the site, technologically speaking or otherwise.
We're in a "cow seems healthy, still milking fine, everything is fine" situation.
But that's not what this site is about-- it's the community. And that is not something that is nearly as replaceable as some might infer.
P.S. Don't get on the mods for not updating the front page for a new recruit hours after a commit-- as expressed above, to my knowledge
no one is getting paid to work on the site.
P.P.S. If I could double bold and underline the above, I would. It really strikes at the heart of some of the frustrations abound.
EDIT: If I were the owner, I'd worry a whole lot more about failing to monetize due to an ancient SEO platform / lack of a professional. Lot's of lost revenue from being archaic / not evolving to current search algorithims.
