For whatever my opinion as a poster is worth, I will add my support for a dismantling of the american politics boards. The Trump thread, political correctness thread, and (usually) culture thread are all mostly divisive garbage/bitching/moaning. They've done far more harm than good for the community and are especially destructive in the offseason.

As Jeff Goldblum said, nature finds a way. People will always find a way to self-destruct if they want to.

I dont want IE to take away my ringside seat for the political threads just because a few people cant handle that anonymous strangers on an internet message board may disagree with their opinions.

Very true.

That's a damn short sighted mindset if so. Long standing posters that are a treat to read are worth their weight in gold for a site like this. The politics shit will die down, and at this rate only the trolls, uninvested, and mediocre posters will remain. (Likeme.gif)

All about the $ anymore. IE is just a microcosm though. While I believe people should be able to separate things, the truth is, some just can't. Irishsteelhead is right IMO, but overall if folks can handle it, might as well get rid of it in the name of Irish FB.

Political conversation has been a part of this board since it was started in the early days. IrishEnvy was not started just to be a football board.

Over the years there has been sparks now and then between particular posters but usually through the influence of the moderators that was kept in check. Those that didn't get the message after repeated warnings got to post elsewhere.

It's only been since October 2016 that "the mostly divisive garbage/bitching/moaning" really took off in attempt stifle any dialog. Those unhappy with the result of that election took to the board with Strzok like messages, in essence, "We'll stop it!" and if we can't stop it we'll get any discussion removed from the boards.

For the first time in the history of IE political discussion was relegated to a back room because the triggered crowd needed a "safe space". Yet there had been always a safe space, one had to go to the Leprechaun Lounge to read those kind of topics, and if they didn't want to read them, they didn't NOT have to CLICK on the title. And what onerous titles they are:

"Politics" started by BobD in 2012
"2016 Presidential Horse Race" started by DomeX2 eNVy in Nov 2014
"Liberalism & Conservatism" started by that master troller WhiskeyJack in Jan 2015
"Foreign Policy" started by WhiskeyJack in Jan 2015
"Immigration" (About Germany not the U.S) started by Calvegas04 in Feb 2016
"Healthcare" started by Legacy in April 2016
"Police State USA" started by LAX in Apr 2015
"Feminism" started by IrishinFL in Aug 2015
"Culture" started by WhiskeyJack in May 2016
"Trump Presidency" started by BGIF in Nov 2016
"Racism" started by Cackalacky in Apr 2017
"Another Shooting" started by Son of Oahu in Nov 2017
"2018 Midterm Elections" started by Buster Bluth in 2018

One of the earliest political posts was "I'm becoming a democrat" by StoneBreakerwasgod in April of 2007 ... 11 years ago.

Yet in the past year, those titles became onerous to the tiggered crowd if they appeared OMG on the front page. The same page they appeared for more than a dozen years. They had to be segregated to "hidden" space, the "Political Threads" because of complaints of a few that couldn't stand to see the name "Trump", the word "Feminism, or whatever they didn't agree with. If you don't want to read about it, don't click on the topic.

Long standing posters that are a treat to read are worth their weight in gold for a site like this. The politics shit will die down, and at this rate only the trolls, uninvested, and mediocre posters will remain.

According to the front page there are over 69,000 members of IE, I suspect that includes 50,000 or so bots. The IE Membership List shows a lot less.

As for those "long standing posters that are worth their weight in gold" ... the membership lists about 300 with 1,000 or so posts. Of those 3,000 about 50-75 left back in 2007 -2008 when the board changed ownership. Another 50 or so were banned over the years. Another 50-75 (or more) like WabashFalcon and Praetorian moved on with family/career demands or maybe they just outgrew us. Everybody gets older but some stay immature forever.

Point is, there are probably about 100 or less regular posters on IE perhaps more in the neighborhood of 50. Some post in a variety of threads, most stay in a few areas such as football and recruiting. Sorry, greyhammer but despite your misconception "only the trolls ... remain" is patently false. The mods for years have dealt with that issue. Posters who were funny but foul mouthed, or bigoted, or just asses are gone. Sadly some good posters in sports topics couldn't carry the same level of conversation in other topics, be they the segregated political topics, or just chit chat.

Their inability to carry on a reasonable conservation without spilling their bowels verbally was not the fault of others not of the topics. It was their own. Buster got to the point where he could not discuss any topic without insulting the intelligence of anyone who didn't see things his way on any topic. His M.O. became rant by ad hominem.

That's not the fault of the topic, that's the fault of the poster. Some posters in their zeal for their point of view posted tweets from bloggers who simply took a headline and rewrote it for sensationalism, with little or no substance. Frequently posting a host of "articles" (one line tweets by different twits) trying to demonstrate overwhelming news when all it was, was circular regurgitating. When someone pointed that out, retorts were hurled of racist, bigot, Nazi, communist, neocon, liberal, libertarian, or any other ism to disparage the poster. Again that's not the fault of a topic, that's the fault of posters incapable of making a viable argument.

Shutting down threads because a few posters have hissy fits and are intolerant of others, whatever their viewpoint, is wrong. Chastise or punish the miscreants not those who behave.

And for the record, I'm a lifelong GDI, God Damn Independent. I piss off both the left and the right with regularity.

I would say that there are a number of times Cack came and posted news that may have just been unbiased reporting, but there was also fluff that was opinionated and skewed to one end. He's completely entitled to those positions, and based on his political beliefs those positions worked for him, but it doesn't mean they're "right" for everyone. That's the big problem with the Political threads, everyone is entrenched in their positions and no one really doesn't want to give an inch so there's very little actual discourse or meaningful discussion.

The issues here are emblematic of the issues across the internet in 2018. The only way to tamp down on the toxic discourse is to ban people for being rude. Well, "rude" is subjective. And frankly I know I've been rude before as have literally dozens of posters so trying to enforce politeness is likely to just make things worse.

We tried pulling everything off the front page because people were sick and tired of coming here and having most of the front page have nothing at all to do with football. Dumb move? Smart move? IMO, only thing it changed was reducing the number of people participating in the threads of that nature.

The best solution would be to be able to give people restriction/timeouts to specific threads or forums when they cross the line. Unfortunately, we don't have that power. Maybe the answer is to be more harsh, period... but then who will be left posting? Like 30-40 people, total?

Or remove the politics threads and make this board only about football and tacos as god intended.

Agree on all counts. I just wish there was a way to ban or self ban specifically from political threads for some.

Praetorian asked me to delete his account. He mentioned that he's moving into a new role and needed to step away. I think he wanted to send a few shots over the bow of his political opponents before bowing out. Rest assured his account deletion had nothing to do with the recent dust-up in the Politics thread.

So, he's running for office and now needs to cover his tracks. Smart man.

He's got views all over the map (which is a good thing), so I doubt he's running for office. Perhaps as a third party if so, but that's not what I gleaned from his post and PMs.

I don't understand how some people let anonymous internet strangers drive them to such levels they feel the need to "step away" by deleting their account. I long ago learned people don't change their minds via debate, it has to come on their own accord, or at least they must feel like it has.

The political threads are fun, at least I have fun. No one wants a serious discussion about politics or religion, they want to be right. That is why I usually just troll the political threads because there's no point having a "serious discussion" because from my experience on the internet what constitutes a "serious discussion" is "*insert Tweet/web link that supports my worldview* haha, the other side is stupid. Haha Drumpft is racist and Republicans are evil (or Democrats are the real racists and want to raise taxes on real Americans)."

Western politics are a sideshow, a circus, a distraction anyway. Anyone who takes Western politics, at face value, overly serious is lost anyway. What I usually want to happen in Western politics is maximum chaos so the whole farce can be laid bare. The emperor has no clothes. I like Trump primarily because he is an agent of chaos.

My feelings exactly. The swamp/farce has done a great job of dividing folks as a distraction though...

I mean this about sums it up.

Before 2016 the politics sections of IE was a blast and a real source of intelligence conversation. I'd have more in-depth discussions on there than in plenty of the classes I was taking at the time. Whiskey, Wooley, Wizards, even Lax would all post. I learned a great deal from articles and websites linked by Whiskey and Wooley specifically. The insights from Grahambo, iirc a CIA contractor, were always top notch.

Then a steady stream of trolls appeared. The more dignified posters simply ignored the place (see: Whiskey, Wooley) and rarely got involved and what it currently amounts to is little more than a half-dozen IE trolls being intentionally obtuse and arguing with cack and myself. Well Cack is toast and I'll be messaging Whiskey to delete my account too so I think greyhammer is right on the money. I don't know what North Dakota, loomis, and ickythump are going to talk about now. Bluto isn't going to take the bait like I did.

It most certainly did. It turns out that after two years of having the same conversation with the same people who seamlessly shift from whataboutisms to strawmans, it's easier to just say "you're a fucking idiot." So in that sense Lax is right I was being exhibit A of 2018 political discourse. But then again it's not really discourse when one side states plainly they they "just troll the political threads because there's no point having a 'serious discussion'." And I think that's why I wasn't banned a year ago (even though I was occasionally trying)mods knew I was arguing with clowns.

I never told a poster like Lax, Wizards, Irishff, johnnycando, ndaccountant, acamp, etc etc to fuck off. I reserved my ire for the same half-dozen clowns who were not interested in engaging in a real conversation and/or who posted textbook xenophobia. greyhammer posted a few months ago a pretty succinct take on why it was impossible to have a conversation in good faith with the same half-dozen IE "Conservatives."

Before 2016, there was not constant vitriol spewed by the opposite party. While there were folks that clearly didn't like Obama, it was not a constant bash fest against the president. It was also not a constant bash fest of the population that voted for him.

Posters like Bluto, while I don't share his beliefs, have shared why they believe what they do in an honest and open manor. For instance, on unions, he and I had opposite experiences (we all are shaped by our experiences), but I can understand, empathize, and respect his views on the topic. I experienced corruption and waste in my experience with unions. My experience doesn't make his less real, and his experience doesn't make mine less real.

Your "ire" is typically unleashed at anyone who presents a different view, different facts on the same topic, or different experience. You don't share any experience other than you used to be a republican (which if true, you've swung pretty far, which would also create questions) and act as if anyone who doesn't agree with your position is an idiot. There are two sides to every argument, and it's rare politically speaking that only one side has valid points of discussion. You see nothing valid in the other side of the coin and bring mostly arrogance to any debate. That's not having a conversation in good faith.

Anyway, peace out and Go Irish.

Gracias...a valuable commodity I am. Thanks for the recognition CaP.

Honest question, have you ever posted more than two sentences at a time? Trump is your perfect president, as you can blindly follow without ever having to actually be able to put thought into it. In fact, intellectual thought is actually frowned upon in your mantra. Educated people are your enemy. People that can articulate their thoughts in something more than a meme is your enemy. What’s pathetic about you is that you pose as a Republican. You’re not... you’re a nationalist. An embicile that uses whatever a political party tells you to exert your distasteful views on others. You honestly lack any actual personal beliefs. I have little respect for you or your opinions (if that’s what you call them).

Which is why I don't understand how some of these posters are fans of ND. ND stands for so many things on the opposite side of their belief spectrum.
