You may have been a lurker, but as a lurker you may have missed the 90%. Kind of like an iceberg, below the surface. I can state because I saw some of the PM's that it started weeks before the big bang, and that the deer was (foolishly) drawn in to a no win situation.

Something like someone putting apples and corn out for the deer to eat, and standing there with their rifle, bow, or shotgun, waiting . . .

So I can see that Grey. From your perspective. But there is a lot of love for the deer because his usually playful personality made the site a better place.

Nuetered was beloved by many and personally he and I got along great.

But he made moderating damn near impossible at times. His rants against people were legendary LOL.

I'll just say that he was given many, many second chances, and there were things that members never saw which might have swayed some opinions. The admin made the final decision, and all 6-7 mods at that time were good with it, to a man.

I do hope Neut is in a good place in his life...

When Neutered was on his game, he paradoxically was a constant force for REDUCING tension in threads. His off-the-wall nutty commentary would regularly divert ugly-starting confrontations between others. But then there were the bad days, and those, often coincident with [apparent] drinking during gametimes, could get really rough.

Johnny too had a knack of depressurizing threads of a certain type by short and sweet use of his amazingly effective Internet Stud image.

I liked both of those guys a great deal, and feel that IE is a lot poorer and certainly less colorful without them.

Alcohol may have helped, but it was the final touch. It was all done via interpersonal communication.

Some people will say it this or that, and put it on others or whatever, but if you had seen the final outburst (not the one where he got into it with a mod...that was about the 3rd to last final outburst), you would have seen how something wasn't quite right with him, and it had been so for awhile. Other members who knew him well have told me the same thing. Again, hope he has mentally got himself right...
