My guess is that Huff was our clear 1st choice, and as fluid as the Bama staff has been the past week or so, Huff took some time to make his decision. Maybe we'll move quickly now?
For real. If Huff was the guy, I can see why it wasn't going too quickly. He'd have been a great hire, just move onto the next guy.

A lot of talk on 247 about Mike Hart.

Was going to be one of my first suggestions. He has moved up quickly in the ranks.

I know he's a Michigan guy, but he was the definition of a reliable, workhorse back once, and I'm sure as a young guy who has been in the league, he could recruit pretty well.

Not a slam dunk, but he could be a good fit.

Mike Hart would be an awful hire and he'll be here 2 years max.

If he can get a 5 star RB recruit, would it be worth it?

This is kind of the narrative at 247. Or at least with Wiltfong and Loy. Seem to be pushing him pretty hard. Their "sources" think he'll be excellent on the trail and he's a rising star in the profession. He comes in ready to recruit his butt off, lands a couple of stud RB's, and then moves on. I guess we'll see.

This is a tough one. He went to Michigan which is disgusting but he talked shit about Harbaugh, so that’s a plus. Fuck it, if he can recruit I’ll take it. Plus, it will piss off Michigan fans.

In what ways is he awful?

1. No affinity for the school, so he will only be here as long as the paycheck is good enough. And will gleefully got to a lateral opportunity at another Tier 1 or Tier 2 P5 school should it open up.
2. No big time coaching experience, has only been a P5 RB coach for 3 years. None of that experience is at a Tier 1 or Tier 2 school with legitimate expectations.
3. No history of developing elite RBs or elite rushing attacks.
4. No history of recruiting elite RBs.*
5. No ties to the south.

This is without even getting into the weeds of how much he has run his mouth in the past ("little brother," Jim Harbaugh comments, etc.)... I can't judge the maturity/personality of someone I don't know, but he has had multiple instances of bad optics.

*To be fair, the RBs he signed at Indiana are very good recruits by Indiana standards.

It may very well work out, but it would certainly be a disappointing hire in the "here and now".

Up and comer. Harballz hater. Did well at IU.

Those are the goods. Unless there's someone still out there that's an obvious upgrade, I'm good with Hart. Silly to hear some say he'd be gone for the first lateral with $... I think he actually showed some loyalty following his old coach to a bottom feeder IU from a middle of the pack ACC team. Guys want to improve their career and move up. His trajectory so far does not scream Merc, at least to me.....

He might end up being a good guy, good recruiter, etc.. Might not... If he leaves for his scUM once Jimmy is gone, I could understand that. If he leaves for one of the top blue bloods in the South (or even one like OSU), I could understand that. We've had many ND coaches do that as well already.

I'm happy to take a couple years with a shot at a couple big star guys, and chance he actually might be a good fit and longer term guy. ANYONE good is not going to spend more than 5 years in that position without moving up anyway.

How about Ja’Juan Seider at Penn State. He made $340,000 at UF before his Penn State move although after his recruiting the last two years I’m sure he’s making over $500K in which case he’s unpoachable. Des Kitchings from NC State made $325,000 in 2018 and just was promoted to Co-OC but he’d be an upgrade over Mike Hart. Ryan Held out of Nebraska has been impressive so far at UCF and Nebraska but he’s at his Alma Mater. Zohn Burden at VT has made some nice recruiting moves too. Robert Gillespie was just retained by a new staff at UNC but he could seek greener pastures. Tyrone Wheatley just was fired from the Jacksonville Jaguars job and he supplied Harbaugh with damn near half of his best players at Michigan right now. Tim Horton at Auburn was just demoted to an off field role at 50 years old which doesn’t sound like retirement age so I think he’d be in the market for a new job. Lastly, Curtis Luper at TCU is a big time recruiter who could potentially be pried away from TCU for no other reason than I heard 247 mention him as a candidate. The point I’m making is that there are some big time stars in the RB coaching profession that could be hired and I hope BK realizes this by hiring a big time recruiter and position coach. The staff needs that. According to the Irish Illustrated podcast, Jeff Quinn and Del Alexander are “dogs” on the trail or basically enjoy the grind of recruiting, Tom Rees is still an unknown who seems to work hard at it but doesn’t have a lot of results yet (AJ Henning, Rylie Mills, and more prospects will show his caliber), and Chip Long doesn’t seem to love the grind but has gotten some solid results on the trail. It would be awesome for the staff if they had another big time recruiter in the offensive room to go along with those guys. Pete Sampson mentioned that most teams want or have their RB coach as their best recruiter on the staff and ND needs to match that or change what they’ve had with Autry Denson.

Honestly would not be that upset with Hart. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance, even a Skunkbear from time to time. Look at Elston for instance.

As long as he can recruit and bring the energy that would be fine with me.

Note: I know zero about his coaching ability but the name itself should bring some light to the program, right?

Lance Taylor would be an awesome hire. NFL and P5 experience, has coached and recruited elite RBs to an academically restrictive institution. He is the opposite of Mike Hart on resume.

I was referring to the Mike Hart stuff. Lance Taylor would be okay.

I'd rather have Lance Harbor from Varsity Blues. Genius called the hook and ladder to his 400 pound tackle

My opinion on Mike Hart depends almost entirely on how much work he actually had to do to get Sampson James to flip from pOSU to Indiana.

Did he flip a legit RB prospect from the Buckeyes, or was James getting pushed out and sitting on limited options?

He made the play call, but let's be real, the mastermind behind that play (and many others) is Mox. He was the innovator with advanced and new formations as well.

I'd like to know that as well. At the time, I just assumed it was a default choice versus a sick pull from OSU. With that said, a lot of buzz at 247 about his recruiting acumen. There are a couple of posters who seem connected to Indiana HS football, that have said he's been very impressive on the trail. Obviously that's a TIFWIW kind of situation but it sounds promising.

I hadn't heard the name Lance Taylor before and that is also very interesting.

I'd rather have Taylor than Hart. Elston is still far removed form Michigan. Feels too soon for Hart. Also Taylor recruited 2 Heisman contenders so there's that.
