That’s fine and in the event it’s true, both hires would have the same negative making that less relevant since it was basically a head to head hire.

scUM vs Bama lol.

i would have been fine with either. the more i read / see about Taylor, the more I like him. love that he was a transition guy (WR/RB), so that might work out well for a guy like Jafar, but also improve the RBs in general catching the ball.

The concern with Hart wasn’t UM, it’s that he’ll want to be an OC somewhere in short order. Which has more variables to it than one school (Bama) potentially grabbing your RB coach.

I may be wrong, but you don't choose a coach based on whether they will get hired by a different program in a couple of years. If Bama comes calling in 2-3 years, he has probably done a real good job

the general concern i have is either being poached, be it OC or other including by Saban. doesn't really matter to me. not sure Hart's resume screams OC job anytime soon, unless it's lower tier school.

As soon as Taylor was leaked as a candidate, he was my favorite. Get another Bryce Love and this time make sure he plays with a Golden Dome!

Real talk for a minute. Who leaves for Bama first - Taylor or Long? 🤔

In the hypothetical event that Long leaves for 'Bama, it's realistic that if Taylor does well here, he poaches Taylor to join him on the new staff at 'Bama.

Just saw Denson was let go today after a 2-8 record.
Shit. That's too bad. One of my all time favorite players and I was hoping he'd make the most of the opportunity.

Having never been an OC, he's probably going right back to RB Coach and a second shot at an HC job will be an uphill battle.

Honestly seems to me like he's too good of a guy for a generally scummy profession.
Indeed. This scares me about Marcus Freeman, too.

@irishrb is right, I believe. Denson will be okay. Someone looking for an RB coach this winter will surely snap him up. He's got some early HC experience too now to his resume.

Maybe not all, but a lot of players seemed to have some kind words for him.

Lol I'm not concerned about Freeman. I like the guy a lot, but a guy in his mid-30s doesn't get to become the head coach at a blue blood like Notre Dame without knowing how to manipulate people and without breaking a few eggs on the way. Probably an overly cynical take, but like a said, it's largely a scummy profession at the levels Marcus is in.

Wasn't his issue recruiting? Thought he was pretty well thought of as a coach, as he got a lot out of players. Just was a terrible recruiter. If that was the problem, that won't be an issue in the NFL
I don't think there was an issue with recruiting. Not really even a minor one let alone anything that would lead up to "terrible."

He went from an RB coach to mid major HC to NFL RB coach and he deserves it as a professional and as a person. People forget he did some time in the NFL and is more than qualified for this role. When the McCullough rumors started up, Denson popped into my mind immediately. For people so hell bent on hiring alumni, this is one instance where it would make total absolute sense.

Named Arizona Cardinals RB Coach. Talk about failing upwards.
This is a pretty bad take. He was one hell of a teacher and developer as a RB coach. Yes, he could be a little quirky with his recruiting and bible verses, but he got the most out of his players. He certainly didn't fail at ND, and the fact he didn't do well as a HC at Charleston Southern doesn't detract from his ability to coach the RB position.

He was fine at ND. He wasn't great. He wasn't bad. He's going from being a high school AD to an NFL RB coach. I wish him well and don't think saying failing upwards is wrong here. Hopefully he sees much success at Arizona. The NFL may be his level.

I might be incorrect, but wasn't he point man on Kyren Williams and Tommy Tremble? I believe he handled Florida too and helped Hiestand land Hainsey in addition to other Sunshine State guys like Drew White?

He got hired for the AD gig the first week of January. He had the job for less than half of a basketball season. It might be more accurate to say he went from G5 HC to NFL RB coach. He obviously didn't get a whack ass P5 severance when he got fired in November so he went and got a job, which sounds like bootstrapping it. The better thing came along and he took it.

Kliff Kingsbury fell up. I think Denson "falls in" here, and considering he took a P5 job nobody else probably wanted without ever being an OC just in time for the first global pandemic in a century, like you said, wish him well. He ends up doing quite well for himself here. I can't figure out the connection to anyone on the Arizona Cardinals staff that got him this gig. Guessing there has to be one.

The only connection I can find is with the QB coach, Israel Woolfork. I believe he was Denson's GA at Miami of Ohio and then followed him as RB coach there. Which looking at Woolfork's experience, is an even weirder hire because it doesn't seem he has any QB coaching experience.

Good catch.

The AZ RB room is pretty long in the tooth, including a cancer survivor. Could be a rough go for him but he's getting a paycheck from The Shield now as a coach. 7th Round draft choice with 62 career NFL carries. Always liked him as a player and coach. I'm still rooting for him. The Bible verses might be more suited to being in the pros anyway.

I'm not going to fault anyone for recruiting under BK at this point. From the few staff that stuck around it sure seems like recruiting in general stepped up after BK went out the door. Evidence seems to solidly suggest BK was lazy, and the strategy was likely to chase low hanging fruit to secure above average, loyal talent that was unlikely to flip. "RKGs"

He was much more than fine at ND. The RB position underperformed before he arrived with barely anyone reaching their potential let alone exceeding it. Theo was the only guy that definitely reached his potential. Maybe Cam too but he had some key bad moments. Atkinson, G. Bryant, and C. Wood never actually hit their potential, and fundamentals, especially ball security, were a huge issue. Then Denson arrived and he got the best out of every player he coached. Josh Adams had the greatest freshman year in ND RB history. Prosise was developed into a 3rd round NFL draft pick in his 1 and only year as an RB under Denson. Jafar Armstrong actually looked like a good back in 2018 before he got hurt, but then looked like he had no idea how to play the position after Denson left the following year. Dexter Williams struggled with injuries and inconsistency but Denson kept developing him and he went out with a fantastic senior year. Even Deon McIntosh showed huge potential under Denson before getting into trouble.

Every RB Denson coached at ND met or exceeded their potential. . He did a great job teaching basic running and blocking fundamentals and eliminated fumbling entirely from the position group. He was much better than fine.

That's a good point on the fumbling. For all his pluses, Alford's backs occasionally had fumble issues and Denson basically eliminated them all together. Most of those fumbles may have been more under Hinton though, before Alford switched from WR to RB.
