Not ranked. No shocker there.
First time since September 2017. It's a sad day. Strange feeling being mid-September and knowing we are already eliminated from CFP contention.

At this juncture, I just hope the staff and the players find a way to salvage a respectable season and keep these recruiting classes in place. Scary feeling knowing that we just aren't quite sure how low the floor really is right now.

Arkansas is not a Top 10 team. There best victory is a 7 point win against a milder Cinci team from last year. They needed late 4th quarter heroics to beat Missouri State.

Not saying we should be ranked but UNC is receiving votes but ND isn't getting any

Funny thing is we’re probably in the Top 15 if we make more stop on defense against Marshall.
Doesn’t really matter though. Keep winning and we’ll get back up there.

And AP voter who wants to be credible should propose the poll be eliminated until October. No more pre-season polls or September polls when 5-0 teams haven’t faced anyone of note.

But…it elicits clicks so it will never go away.

I’m fine with them pre season and early season. Gives us something to talk about. But they need to be WAY more flexible and willing to make huge moves.

UNC getting votes while ND gets none is interesting. Not saying we deserve any. But if we don't, they don't.
I would give UNC votes, but there's certainly some other teams that shouldn't be ahead of them or us. The AP voting is silly.
James Madison has 39 votes, the toughest teams they've faced are Middle Tennessee State and Appy State. The only Sun Belt team that I'd give AP votes to is 5-0 Coastal Carolina even then they've only played other Sun Belt teams, FCS, and 1-3 Army.
A&M is still getting votes and they lost to Appy State and unranked Mississippi St by 3 scores, they have no business getting votes if we're not.
Illinois is getting votes for beating Wyoming, FCS Chattanooga, and two teams with 3 losses: Wisky and Virginia. Illinois lost to Indiana, who squeaked by Idaho and W Kentucky for their wins.
Purdue getting votes for beating FAU, Indiana St, and the Minnesota upset.
That Marshall game is just fucking us.

Want to be ranked?
Easy fix: don't lose to Marshall. At home.

There are plenty of opportunities to climb the rankings, but ND will have to win their games. I'm still not sold they can do that reliably. This Saturday will be very telling.

We might just acknowledge the overarching stupidity of the modern sports entertainment industry, and note that Howard has gotten himself gigantic coverage/notoriety with those insane "picks." He has already gotten the prime air time engagement with ESPN's lowest quality highest decibel sports idiot (SAS --- letters rearrangible to taste) and "ascended" to peak twittering status. He, in the quality-optional entertainment business, is "winning."

Also, by not talking about Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Clemson, he has engaged the football public who are bored to death by talk about those same teams anyway. Picking them is equivalent to asking at my retirement community "How was the Soup today? Good?" --- riveting conversation.

I don't rate Howard as anything like a strategic mastermind (concept is a joke in itself), but he just may have the last laugh as to keeping him on the prime ESPN set with this call. That cast was getting REAL stale, and Howard most of all. When Corso choosing what head to wear, or turning to someone with "not so fast my friend" (and still having nothing really to say) are the show's highlights, I'd be thinking about change. (Why else the non-football guests and their shallow commentaries each week?) Howard doesn't want to be dumped off at the next station.

As to votes on the polls: No reason to care yet.
If we beat BYU, we deserve votes.
If we get our job done vs Stanford and UNLV, we are 5-2 and deserve to be around "20."
(The voters will then give us back our credit from playing OSU dead even.)
Then the biggest "tell" of the season: Syracuse. Win and we're "real."
If we're Real, we can beat Clemson. They are top four in reputation only (Sadly USC may be better.)
It would be "fun" to go into USC 9-2, but I'm not counting on it.
