I think we do a yearly thread for these polls where we discuss them. Even though they end up meaning nothing once the CFP polls come out.

Here is the first coaches poll and I'll edit it when I see the AP poll come out closer to the season.

Five seems high until you look at the teams behind us and what they lost

5 ACC teams in the top 20
3 SEC teams in the top 20

No team more overrated than USC but they will live up to it because of their schedule.

Wow they miss both Oregon and Washington? Going to Utah might be tough but otherwise that's a pretty pretty soft schedule. Sets up nicely for us to have a good win at the end of the year though.

Lsu isn't ranked? I bet they finish the year ranked, as BK pulls in a routine 8-4 and in the SEC, that gets you rank in the 20s

LSU has the recruiting to be top 5. They had back to back top 5 classes on that roster. They’ve had some transfers but they’re still magnitudes of order better than most of the 10-20 range teams.

It looks mostly based off of last year.

You're telling me Pitt with Slovis makes them the 16th best team in America to start the season?

Slovis got hurt…again, on Saturday.
that's fine, but it really isn't the point I'm trying to make.

Pitt went 11-3 last year on the back of the only QB drafted in the first round. Ranking them 16th is one example of how these preseason polls aren't really based on any kind of predictions or insight into the new season. AP or Coaches. They look at last year and throw something together based on that.

Take Michigan as another example. Losing both those pass rushers alone is going to give them a significant drop off from last season, not to mention some of the coaches they lost on that staff.

Even without Addison and Pickett, they still return a ton of production and are close to the top 3rd:

If Slovis can be good, they'll be fine. 16th though? Doubt it.

You said, “Pitt with Slovis” and I was just pointing out Pitt may not have Slovis.

Sure, but Michigan's schedule is Charmin baby soft before the Bio 10 schedule and even then, it's meh. It's OOCs are Colorado State, Hawaii, UConn all at home. They're going to get billed as a top team because they'll likely go into PSU 6-0, and then get a bye before Michigan State, and play Illinois before Ohio State.

How do they measure "returning production" and how are we returning 66 percent of ours when we lost our starting QB and the two skill position players with the most yards from scrimmage in Williams and Austin?

How is Clemson 4? They were not good last year and their QB is kinda a mess.

They're replacing their best QB since Dan Marino with a guy who went 16-28 with a pick against Arizona State.

Ranking them preseason Top 25 is basing it off of last year.

Other than ND their schedule is trash. Perfect set up for a great W/L record.

Their QB situation is much better. If DJ struggles again then they have his replacement waiting in the wings this year - unlike last year. IMO though, DJ turns it around.

That defensive front is gonna be fantastic.

Looking at Michigan, USC, Clemson and wondering if anyone plays a schedule that isn't trash.

On an ND note, the only team outside of the top 25 that received votes was BYU. So again, anything worse than 8-4 is of grave concern about Freeman's coaching ability, and even 8-4 would be a bit alarming.

Idk why Michigan is garnering so much hype after all they lost last year, but just like USC they'll live up to the preseason nonsensical hype because they have a cupcake soft schedule in September. It's honestly a joke. Is there an easier patch to a 4-0 start in the history of the sport?

Let's hope nothing unexpected comes up between now and Thanksgiving.

Every scholarship WR should be placed in bubbles for the other six days a week.

5 non power five schools finished in the last coaches poll of last year.

UC and UH are the two that were graced with a preseason ranking but they dropped them 18 and 8 spots respectively.

So I have a hard time believing the coaches who vote are looking at schedules.

Texas got one first place vote.
Honestly, might be Saban who put that vote in. That way in his press conference after the game he can say they beat what he thought was the best team in the country. Or he would use it to motivate his team for the week. "Someone out there thinks that they are better than you. They have this team ranked #1."
