I enjoyed the new film, ROS, (1) because I saw it with my kids in 4D and they are at exactly the right age to love that kind of thing and (2) because it apologized for Rian Johnson's slapping me in the face.
But, upon reflection, it was pretty darn mediocre.
It wasn't pretentious and nonsensically preachy like RJ's movie, but I no longer think JJ Abrams is a particularly great story teller. The characters were wooden. The continuous McGuffins and borrowing of old story lines seemed lazy, and JJ certainly buys into the "MOAR" approach to action. He can film a beautiful scene, but it doesn't translate into a coherent, worthwhile story.
I agree that some of the plot holes were not his directly his fault, but the trilogy, in the end, just wasn't that interesting.
I'd give it a B-. It was too entertaining to get a bad grade, but too much of a mess for a good one.
