Rey's English accent in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a clue about her parents - Vox

Also I wasn't enamored with Finn's weakness. Han and Leia were great because they were both strong characters. However unless Finn grows more backbone, Rey will easily outshine him as she develops her powers and the relationship won't be as believable to me.
Where are you getting this relationship? Nobody sees that but you. Finn's hand-holding and "cute boyfriend" quip were comic relief.

I think that is a little far fetched, she may very well be Luke's daughter, but thinking they had which planet had which accents when they made the first star wars is a little out there.
Except that it's been consistent across all Star Wars media for 40 years.

I saw the movie a few days ago and have been trying to read through this thread before posting my thoughts. I didn't make, and I might never make it, so here goes anyways.

1. Thought it was awesome. Can't say I'm surprised that there are people that are being hipsters about it in this thread, because that is what we are now as a culture. But for what it is - a fun space fantasy - it was fantastic. I keep seeing it being placed on par with ROTJ, and I think I would probably slot it in there just ahead and solidly in third place for me.

2. I did not realize there would be a discussion about whether Rey is the progeny of one of the main characters from the OT. She is the daughter of Luke or Leia (but not both you sick weirdos floating that idea). I get that based on what we know now that you can say "but why did this thing happen then....?" but I learned something about good writing from watching Breaking Bad and more importantly listening to podcasts about it where supposed experts kept trying to predict where it was going and thinking the writers were locked into certain plot progressions based on the way they presented something previously, and every time the writers would write their way around and make it make total sense in retrospect. I think there is too much to suggest that Rey is a Skywalker descendant at this point, and nothing the writers have done so far really eliminates that from being the case.

3. Speaking of writing. I've seen a couple mentions of JJ Abrams and what he will do with the next films in the part of this thread I read. Maybe it was corrected later on, but JJ is done with the series. Rian Johnson is writing/directing Episode 8 and I believe he is now signed on for Episode 9, as well. Rian Johnson did Looper, which I thought was very good and very smart, and I'm not generally a science fiction nerd movie type.

I'm going to keep reading this thread and if I ever finish it I might chime in with more. (Maybe I can get through it faster if I ignore the endless discussion about parsecs as a distance vs. time measurement.)

JJ will remain on as a sort of producer/godfather to the franchise role. Episode 9 will be directed by Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, and who also looks like Adam Richman from Man vs Food.

I think it is necessary to have Abrams serve as a sort of sounding board for plot points just to ensure internal consistency, but as I understand it his role will not include creative input going forward.

Yeah I watched ROTJ the other day and TFA is definitely better.

I don't agree that Rey is related.

It's funny you bring up Breaking Bad because Rian Johnson directed what is often considered the best episode, Ozymandias or whatever. He also directed the famous Fly episode that is pretty devisive. Episode VIII is in great hands IMO.

I don't consider it a spoiler, but maybe some will. The link seemed pretty obvious to me. The question is still who the mother is {cough cough} Leia {cough cough}

My son and I have listened to it several times. We do not think that is what Kylo says.
I agree.

I think more the more convincing evidence is in Rey and Ren's first encounter when they force-link and he says something like "I feel it, too."

Miniscule nitpick. All of the heroes and villains are looking for BB-8, and they all seem to know exactly what a BB unit looks like. If his number is 8, there can't possibly be that many of them for their appearance to be common knowledge.

Wow, you just compromised the entire integrity of the new script.

Wait what about R2-D2??? Let's break down his name. Is he the second R unit?? Wait but what if he's actually the second D unit??? But wait here me out: "crackpot theory" what if he is the combination of both? And C3PO??? 3???? Did anyone notice that?? 3 as in one more than 2, rule of 2, Sith Lord: C3PO is suprem leader snoke!!!!

Somebody link this to Reddit for confirmation, can't on my phone.

Just saw the 10am showing. Absolutely amazing. Could not have been more happy with the entire movie. The star wars addiction is back after all these years. Incredible.

i listened to it a few times too and I can't understand the word he is saying. It almost sounds like "princess" to me. It doesn't sound like the word they say it sounds like.

They've posted an update.

He says "Face me!", is hit by a shot from Rey, and immediately says "curses!"

I thought the fact they kept bringing BB with them everywhere was worse. How bout you leave the robot in the ship instead of walking him through the cantina.

They were planning on getting onto another "clean" ship. BB was going to be going to with Rey and Finn.

Watched it again today. Liked it a whole lot better even though I knew the entire plot.

One big thing I noticed this time through though was that Kylo is extremely talented in sensing other people's presences (he knows Han Solo is present as soon as they are running about the mega death star even though we have never been shown any signs that Solo is gifted with the force), and he actually looks at Fin quite a bit in this film to the point that if not for the scenes where Rey is kicking tail, you would think it was Fin who was the one gifted with extraordinary force capabilities.

After watching today, I really think it may be Fin in the end who is the savior. Ren detects him after he decides to be good on Jakku and turns and looks at him, and what I thought was REALLY interesting was that after the death of Solo the camera shows Ren looking up at the balcony holding Rey and Fin...and the camera is close up on Fin, not Rey. Why is Ren SO concerned about Fin? He was just a measly storm trooper, he would be easy to deal with, yet Ren can detect Fin early in the movie and he looks at him (or so the camera angle would suggest) after killing Solo. There's much more to Fin than we know.

Anyways, there's my crazy theory. Have at it.

The appearance is common knowledge because they made it so. The First Order knows they are looking for a BB-unit that has a unique orange paint job. So not really sure where your nitpick comes from. If they know they're looking for a droid with a unique orange paint job, even if BB's aren't common, they probably all have been told that it's a spherical shape as well.

Just saw the movie myself and I thought the same thing. In fact, my family thought the same thing too. There is something special about Fin and I have no idea what it is, but Fin will definitely play a bigger role than a simple storm trooper turned good.

I personally think Rey is Luke's daughter. The whole line about Luke's light saber, his father's light saber, and it is now calling you I think gave it away. The interesting question is who the mother is. I hope it is not some "random girl Luke fell in love with, then died shortly after child birth."

Awesome movie by the way. Definitely lived up to the hype.

Star Wars Campbell's soup cans.

Waiting for cereal boxes to return to Star Wars config.

Many Saturday mornings were spent staring at Honeycomb cereal boxes looking at the C3PO mask pop-out on the box looking forward to finishing it so I could have my mom tie the elastic string to it to rock that bad ass bitch!

Dad was out working and mom was enjoying my new hobby/pretend focus.

Epic memories boys.

It might be back. The fever.

Flash forward 30 years: dad is in the hospital recovering from a 5 day ICU stay, mom is remarried and doing great. Life.

Star Wars has no time for those that love it. Those emotions ran wild through me during my viewing.

Time. The thief.

Then seeing my boyhood heros grown old. And reunited. Incredibly emotional.
